Community Baby Shower in Hays Saturday celebrates new, expecting parents

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the Ellis County Rural Water District #1C public water supply system located in Ellis County. 

The City of Hays is not affected by this advisory.&nbsp;

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking&nbsp;or food preparation or use bottled water.&nbsp;

• Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.&nbsp;

• If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.&nbsp;

• Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.&nbsp;

• Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The advisory took effect on&nbsp;April 2,&nbsp;2025&nbsp;and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.&nbsp;

KDHE&nbsp;officials issued the advisory because of&nbsp;of a&nbsp;waterline&nbsp;leak&nbsp;resulting in a loss of pressure in the&nbsp;distribution&nbsp;system.  Failure to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

&nbsp;Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State University will host two distinguished scholars of history for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s 2025 Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Lecture, “Territorial Expansion in Nazi Europe and the United States in the 19th and 20th Centuries.”

Between 1939 and 1945, as part of their efforts to eliminate Jews from the European continent, the Nazi dictatorship removed people from the Reich they considered unworthy of being citizens because they did not fit into their vision of the racial “national community.” They forcibly displaced Jews, whom they called “undesirables,” eastward into ghettos where conditions were extremely harsh, simultaneously expanding their borders to create “living space” for “racially pure” Germans.&nbsp; 

In a much different context, the democratic United States expanded its borders westward between the 19th and 20th centuries. To free up land for its growing population, the United States violently removed Indigenous peoples, whom some Americans perceived as incompatible with national and racial ideals.&nbsp; While these two histories are distinct, by discussing them together, we can learn new things about how and why they unfolded.

Join us with two major scholars of these topics in a program designed to illuminate some phenomena common to the persecution histories of those considered “others” in society, as well as what is unique in each of these experiences.

 </figure>FHSU University CommunicationsFort Hays State University will host two distinguished scholars of history for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s 2025 Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Lecture, “Territorial Expansion in Nazi Europe and the United States in the 19th and 20th Centuries.”Between 1939 and 1945, as part of their efforts to eliminate Jews from the European continent, the Nazi dictatorship removed people from the Reich they considered unworthy of being citizens because they did not fit into their vision of the racial “national community.” They forcibly displaced Jews, whom they called “undesirables,” eastward into ghettos where conditions were extremely harsh, simultaneously expanding their borders to create “living space” for “racially pure” Germans.&nbsp; In a much different context, the democratic United States expanded its borders westward between the 19th and 20th centuries. TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Corporation Commission wants to remind utility customers that there are two important dates coming up that they should be aware of.&nbsp;

 First, the Cold Weather Rule ends on Monday, March 31. The Cold Weather Rule protects residential customers, served by Kansas Corporation Commission regulated utilities, from disconnection when temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees.

In addition, Monday is the deadline to apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, known as LIEAP. When the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, regulated utilities are required to offer a 12-month payment plan upon request, even if a previous payment plan has been broken. When that protection ends on Monday, failure to make arrangements or failure to adhere to an already established payment plan could result in disconnection. 

Reconnection after March 31 may require past due balances be paid in full, depending on the utility's policy. That is why it is important to call now – while regulated utilities are still required to offer the Cold Weather Rule 12-month payment plan.

The KCC urges all customers facing financial difficulties to act now to stay connected. Holy Family Elementary School notes, March 31-April 4, 2025

NORTON — A project to resurface a 12-mile portion of I-70 in Thomas County is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 31.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project will involve a mill and overlay on both east and westbound lanes of I-70 starting near Exit 62 at Mingo and ending at the Logan County line. In addition to the mainline pavement, crews will also resurface the shoulders, ramps and crossovers located within the project limits.

Traffic through the work zone will be reduced to one lane with a decreased speed limit. Motorists should plan for minor travel delays and are reminded to stay alert and use caution in the construction area.

KDOT expects project work to be complete by the end of June, conditions permitting.

COLBY —&nbsp;Colby Community College will host a two-day wrestling camp on May 24-25 at the Colby Event Center, welcoming boys and girls of all ages to learn from top-level competitors and coaches.

Presented by the Kansas National Guard, the camp features 2024 Olympic silver medalist and 2025 NCAA national champion Kennedy Blades of the University of Iowa, who will headline sessions on May 25. 

Additional clinicians include&nbsp;Colby Community College head women’s wrestling coach and former NAIA national finalist Michael Ruiz and Anastasia Hardin of Missouri Baptist University, a four-time NAIA national qualifier and USA Wrestling Beach National Champion. Participants also have the opportunity to learn from camp counselors Gracyn Dombroski, Aspen Sharpe, Luis Vasquez, Destiny Gonzales, and Kaylee Horinek.

Olympic medalist to be featured at Colby wrestling camp in May

COLBY — “Harmonies of Love” will be the theme of the 2025 Tumbleweed Chorus annual show on Saturday, March 29 at 2 p.m. CDT at Colby Community College’s Cultural Arts Center. The doors open at 1:30 p.m., with the show ending about 4:30 p.m. 

This is the 43rd annual show for the Tumbleweed Chorus, whose members hale from throughout northwest Kansas.

The Colby Tumbleweed Chorus together with Hays High Plains Chorus will headline this year’s show, performing “Harmonies of Love”-themed musical selections including “The Longest Time”, “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”, “Lullaby”, “In the Still of the Night”, “Orange Colored Sky”, “Sweet and Lovely”, and “My Honey’s Lovin’ Arms.”

This year’s guest barbershop quartet is Linc 182, the 2023 Illinois State district champion quartet from Bloomington, and competitors in the 2024 International Quartet Barbershop competition. 

Some of the fun-oriented songs that Linc 182 are known for include “Your First Day in Heaven”, “This Could Be the Start of Something Big”, “Toyland”, “As Long As I’m Singing”, “Chordbuster’s March” and “The Best Times I Ever Had (I Owe ‘Em to My Dear Ol’ Dad).” 

The group’s <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082824190167">Facebook page is Linc 182</a>. Lincoln, now 13, is the youngest member of this professional quartet.

The western Kansas barbershop quartets Uncalled 4, Genuine Gents, and Prairie Timbre and the Northwest Kansas women’s barbershop group, Prairie Rose Harmony, will join the combined Tumbleweed and Hays High Plains Chorus on this year’s show.

The Tumbleweed Chorus and Prairie Rose Harmony groups’ annual show are their major fund-raising efforts for the year. The Tumbleweed Chorus is an affiliate of the Barbershop Harmony Society, whose mission is to keep vocal music alive and healthy.

This year’s show will also take a moment to honor the late Curtis Duncan, longtime radio personality in northwest Kansas who had become a fixture as master of ceremonies in past Colby Barbershop spring shows.

Tickets for the show cost $10, and are available by calling 785-694-3057 or contacting local Tumbleweed Chorus or Prairie Rose Harmony members. Numerous area businesses make the show possible through their generous program advertising.

Barbershoppers present “Harmonies of Love” March 29 in Colby, April 5 in Hays

COLBY — Sunday, March 30 at 3:00 p.m. at the Oakley High School auditorium, Western Plains Arts Association will have in concert the <a href="https://www.flydancecompany.com/">“Fly Dance Company.”</a> Contemporary Americana will be reflected as they cross street dance with classical choreographic principles and the technique of hip hop.

Fly Dance Company selects pieces with an emphasis on variety, high energy, and fun entertainment. The audience will be engaged from beginning to end, and leave uplifted by dancers who will have given their all to earn their love.

Admission is by ticket purchased at the door or by WPAA season tickets.&nbsp;

This project is generously funded by Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the state arts agencies of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The Wild West Festival Executive Committee has announced that public voting is now open for the organization’s new logo contest, marking a significant milestone in the festival’s ongoing commitment to community engagement.

Selecting which logos would advance to the voting stage was a challenging process.

Committee members devoted considerable time to reviewing each submission, ensuring that every design was carefully considered.

The final entries represent the mission and spirit of the festival while honoring both traditional and modern design elements, which are now available for public consideration.

“The committee wanted to involve the community in this selection process because the Wild West Festival is ultimately a celebration for everyone,” said Julie Edgeman, president of the Wild West Festival executive committee. “By allowing the public to vote, we are giving festival supporters and residents alike a chance to directly influence the festival’s new&nbsp;look. We believe this approach resonates with the very spirit of what the Wild West Festival is all about—bringing people together and honoring the collective culture of our community.”

Edgeman said that the submissions highlight the creativity and enthusiasm that exists within the region.

Many of the entries featured unique color palettes and bold statements, while others drew on historical elements to convey a sense of heritage.

The Executive Committee expresses appreciation for all participants who dedicated their time and energy to crafting a design that captures the essence of the Wild West Festival.

The advisory was issued because the city could not maintain the minimum required chlorine residual. Failure to maintain required chlorine residual levels may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing of drinking water samples collected from the City of Bunker Hill indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for City of Bunker Hill

NORTON — The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin work on a resurfacing project on a portion of Highway U.S. 83 in Logan and Thomas counties on March 31.

Project work will involve a mill and overlay on 11 miles of the roadway beginning at the west Highway U.S. 40 junction in Oakley and ending approximately eight miles south of the Highway U.S. 24 junction in Thomas County.

Traffic through the areas where crews are actively working will be directed by flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should anticipate possible delays of 15 minutes or less during daylight hours.

KDOT expects the project to be completed by the end of May, conditions permitting.

Bettis Asphalt &amp; Construction Inc., of Topeka, is the primary contractor with a total contract cost of approximately $3 million. Night vision coyote hunting season meeting to be held in Hays

The High Plains Barbershop Chapter, along with the Colby Chapter, are looking forward to the 57th annual show "Harmonies of Love" to be presented Sat., April 5 at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center on the Fort Hays State University campus.

There will be two shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.&nbsp;

The headline quartet for this show is the Barbershop Society's 2008 International Quartet Champion "OC Times."

Four of our local quartets will also perform in the show. They are "Uncalled Four," "Prairie Timbre," "Big Creek Quartet" and "Genuine Gents."

The chapter is thankful for community support.&nbsp;

Tickets for the show are on sale now and may be purchased for $15 in advance at Walgreens, 27th and Vine, Hays, until the day of the show.
