TOPEKA –&nbsp;Each year, the Governor’s Council on Wellness&nbsp;(previously the Governor's Council on Fitness)&nbsp;recognizes one exceptional individual and one remarkable organization in Kansas who have shown outstanding dedication to promoting health, fitness and wellness in our communities.

Nominees for the 2024 Health Champion Award can come from diverse backgrounds – from health care professionals and educators to community leaders and volunteers. The award highlights outstanding individuals and organizations who have significantly impacted health awareness, disease prevention and overall well-being within our state.

“We are excited to review this year’s nominations and see all the great work being done throughout our state,” said&nbsp;Jody Hoener, awards committee chair. “We encourage everyone to nominate the Health Champions in their communities.”

The nomination process is simple and can be completed online. The form requires a brief description of the nominee’s accomplishments and how they have positively influenced their community’s health. It also asks some basic questions about the nominee’s contact information so they can be notified if they receive the award.

The deadline to submit the nomination form is October 31, 2023. The winners will be notified via email, and awards will be announced via a press release in late November. &nbsp;

The awards ceremony will take place on&nbsp;Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the Community Health Promotion Summit that will be held in Wichita at the WSU Woolsey Center.

15 years of impact: Jana’s Campaign presents annual Empty Place at the Table gala 

Members of the community are invited to participate in an important community discussion on the dangers of fentanyl and its increasingly deadly impact on our nation.

"Fentanyl: The Facts" will be presented from 6:30 to 8:30 Thursday in the Memorial Ballroom on the campus of Fort Hays State University.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics, more than 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids, including fentanyl.

“Evidence suggests that 6 out of every 10 pills with Fentanyl contain a potentially lethal dose. This topic needs to be addressed on campus and in the community, as awareness and prompt response can help save lives,” said Walt Hill, executive director of High Plains Mental Health Center, one of the event's principal sponsors.&nbsp;

The town hall event will feature several guest speakers, including Tony Mattivi,&nbsp; director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and Dr. Steven Waring, who leads the Hays Medical Center Opioid Task Force. 

Discussion topics will include information on the effect of fentanyl on the body, the prevalence of the drug in northwest Kansas, how to obtain and use&nbsp;Naloxone,&nbsp;a life-saving medication that can&nbsp;reverse an overdose, the impact of the drug on teens and young&nbsp;adults, and where those affected by the drug can receive treatment and counseling.

“Counterfeit pills and fentanyl are the biggest drug threat in our community. Overdoses and deaths are occurring in Hays, and we have to work together to educate our children on the dangers that they are facing. This town hall meeting will be instrumental in helping to keep our friends and family safe,” said Don Scheibler, Hays chief of police.

The city of Hays is the principal financial sponsor of the town hall meeting, and the High Plains Mental Health Center is the principal organizer. Many local agencies involved in combatting opioid abuse in the region, including the Hays Police Department, FHSU Health and Wellness Services, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department, and DCCCA, will also contribute speakers and expertise to the discussion. Dessert and coffee will also be provided for attendees.

The Hays USD 489 school board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Rockwell Administration Center to review final plans for the new Hays High School.

Hays to host local meeting for NW Kansas regional transportation projects

WASHINGTON, D.C.&nbsp;– First District U.S. Representative Tracey Mann, R-KS, announced the opening of military service academy nominations through his congressional office. Rep. Mann invites students from the Big First District who wish to pursue military service to apply for a congressional nomination to America's military service academies.

During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Plan&nbsp; provides a monthly internet service discount of up to $30 and a one-time device discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. According to FCC data, more than 20 million U.S. households are currently enrolled, including approximately 120,000 in Kansas.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Lifeline and at or below 200% for Affordable Connectivity Plan)&nbsp;or participation in certain assistance programs&nbsp;such as:

Fort Hays State University announces homecoming 2023 schedule of events

LOGAN — The Dane G. Hansen Foundation will make scholarships available in four categories to students in 26 northwest Kansas counties for the 2023-2024 academic year.&nbsp; Students from an accredited high school, registered independent, private or home school in one of the following 26 counties are eligible to apply:

Cheyenne, Cloud, Decatur, Ellis, Ellsworth, Gove, Graham, Jewell, Lincoln, Logan, Mitchell, Norton, Osborne, Ottawa, Phillips, Rawlins, Republic, Rooks, Russell, Saline, Sheridan, Sherman, Smith, Thomas, Trego and Wallace.

Scholarships available for students who will graduate in the current academic year are:

• Seven&nbsp;Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships&nbsp;with annual stipends of $10,000 renewable for three additional years if criteria established by the Scholarship Committee are met.&nbsp; Recipients must attend an accredited four-year public, private or church related Kansas college or university.

• Thirty-Five&nbsp;Hansen Scholar Scholarships&nbsp;with stipends of $6,500 renewable for three additional years if criteria established by the Scholarship Committee are met.&nbsp; Recipients must attend an accredited four-year public, private or church related Kansas college or university.

• Seventy&nbsp;Hansen Student Scholarships&nbsp;with stipends of $4,000 renewable for one additional year, providing the recipients have achieved at least a 3.00 GPA at the college level. Recipients must attend an accredited community, public, private or church related college or university in Kansas.

To qualify for the above scholarships, a student must have taken the&nbsp;ACT test&nbsp;and have a composite score of&nbsp;23 or higher&nbsp;and have at least a&nbsp;3.50 GPA (un-weighted). The student should be an active participant in extracurricular school and community activities, display good citizenship, leadership, and moral integrity.

Students planning to enter the competition for Leaders of Tomorrow, Hansen Scholar or Hansen Student scholarships must register at their school and take the qualifying test at locations to be announced.&nbsp; Information on all scholarships has been sent to qualifying area schools.&nbsp; Tentative test dates have been set for&nbsp;September 13 and 14, 2023.

• One hundred&nbsp;Hansen Career and Technical Education Scholarships&nbsp;with stipends of $4,000 renewable for one additional year, providing the recipients have achieved at least a 3.00 GPA at the college level.&nbsp; Career and Technical Education Scholarships are available to encourage high school seniors who seek competence through career training.&nbsp;&nbsp; An applicant for the Career and Technical Education Scholarship must complete an application form that is available from the high school counselor, or it can be downloaded from our website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.danehansenfoundation.org/" target="_blank">www.danehansenfoundation.org</a>.&nbsp;

The scholarship committee is interested in the student’s character, activities and goals.&nbsp; Applicants for the Hansen Career and Technical Education Scholarship are not required to take a qualifying test.&nbsp; A 3.50 GPA is not necessary to apply for this scholarship.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Career and Technical Education Scholarships must be used at one of the following pre-approved schools in Northwest Kansas: North Central Kansas Technical College (Beloit or Hays), Colby Community College, Northwest Kansas Technical College, Hays Academy of Hair Design (Hays or Salina), Cloud County Community College, Salina Area Technical College, Fort Hays State University (2-year program) or Kansas State Polytechnic – Salina (2-year program).&nbsp;&nbsp;A student planning to pursue a 1 or 2-year technical or associate degree program at a school not included in the above pre-approved list is not eligible to apply.

Hansen Foundation will make scholarships available in four categories to students in 26 northwest Kansas counties for the 2023-2024 academic year.&nbsp; Students from an accredited high school, registered independent, private or home school in one of the following 26 counties are eligible to apply:Cheyenne, Cloud, Decatur, Ellis, Ellsworth, Gove, Graham, Jewell, Lincoln, Logan, Mitchell, Norton, Osborne, Ottawa, Phillips, Rawlins, Republic, Rooks, Russell, Saline, Sheridan, Sherman, Smith, Thomas, Trego and Wallace.Scholarships available for students who will graduate in the current academic year are:• Seven&nbsp;Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships&nbsp;with annual stipends of $10,000 renewable for three additional years if criteria established by the Scholarship Committee are met.&nbsp; Recipients must attend an accredited four-year public, private or church related Kansas college or university.• Thirty-Five&nbsp;Hansen Scholar Scholarships&nbsp;with stipends of $6,500 renewable for three additional years if criteria established by the Scholarship Committee are met.&nbsp; Recipients must attend an accredited four-year public, private or church related Kansas college or university.• Seventy&nbsp;Hansen Student Scholarships&nbsp;with stipends of $4,000 renewable for one additional year, providing the recipients have achieved at least a 3.00 GPA at the college level. Recipients must attend an accredited community, public, private or church related college or university in Kansas.To qualify for the above scholarships, a student must have taken the&nbsp;ACT test&nbsp;and have a composite score of&nbsp;23 or higher&nbsp;and have at least a&nbsp;3.50 GPA (un-weighted). The student should be an active participant in extracurricular school and community activities, display good citizenship, leadership, and moral integrity.Students planning to enter the competition for Leaders of Tomorrow, Hansen Scholar or Hansen Student scholarships must register at their school and take the qualifying test at locations to be announced.&nbsp; Information on all scholarships has been sent to qualifying area schools.&nbsp; Tentative test dates have been set for&nbsp;September 13 and 14, 2023.• One hundred&nbsp;Hansen Career and Technical Education Scholarships&nbsp;with stipends of $4,000 renewable for one additional year, providing the recipients have achieved at least a 3.00 GPA at the college level.&nbsp; Career and Technical Education Scholarships are available to encourage high school seniors who seek competence through career training.&nbsp;&nbsp; An applicant for the Career and Technical Education Scholarship must complete an application form that is available from the high school counselor, or it can be downloaded from our website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.danehansenfoundation.org/" target="_blank">www.danehansenfoundation.org</a>.&nbsp; The scholarship committee is interested in the student’s character, activities and goals.&nbsp; Applicants for the Hansen Career and Technical Education Scholarship are not required to take a qualifying test.&nbsp; A 3.50 GPA is not necessary to apply for this scholarship.&nbsp;&nbsp;Career and Technical Education Scholarships must be used at one of the following pre-approved schools in Northwest Kansas: North Central Kansas Technical College (Beloit or Hays), Colby Community College, Northwest Kansas Technical College, Hays Academy of Hair Design (Hays or Salina), Cloud County Community College, Salina Area Technical College, Fort Hays State University (2-year program) or Kansas State Polytechnic – Salina (2-year program).&nbsp;&nbsp;A student planning to pursue a 1 or 2-year technical or associate degree program at a school not included in the above pre-approved list is not eligible to apply.Through scholarships, the trustees of the Dane G. Annual Hansen college scholarship program announced for NW Kansas students

WICHITA — The American Red Cross is experiencing a national blood shortage. Fewer donors than needed gave this summer, drawing down the national blood supply and reducing distributions of some of the most needed blood types to hospitals. Hurricane Idalia further strained the blood supply with blood drive cancellations and reduced blood and platelet donations in affected areas.&nbsp;

Donors of all blood types are urgently needed, and there is an emergency need for type O blood donors to make an appointment to give now to ensure patients across the country continue to receive critical medical care.&nbsp;

When Idalia slammed into the Southeast – leading to widespread power outages,&nbsp;travel hazards and flooding – the storm also forced the cancellation of over a dozen blood drives and caused hundreds of blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. This compounded a shortfall of about 30,000 donations in August. Right now, blood product distributions to hospitals are outpacing the number of blood donations coming in.

The Red Cross needs blood donors now. COLBY — The fall semester Third Thursday gallery walk opens from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, at five locations in Colby.

Pieces by Cody Beeson of St. Francis and Colby's Jeanne Cox and Madeline McCormick will be displayed at the Colby Community College Cultural Arts Center Gallery. The Detherage Trio out of Hays will perform live music.

Downtown, clay artist Zak Ashburn of Denver will be in the Jonas Gallery, and Pioneer Memorial Library features pen, pencil, and watercolor creations of St. Francis's Kary Zweygardt. Dustin Olsen, from Schoenchen, will be at the Prairie Museum of Art &amp; History, and Brown Dove Healing Arts is the site for photographer Brenton Kirkhart of Colby.
