Trevethan is the well-known Director of the Dienes Art Center in Russell. Imel is a Kansas City-based artist whose strong academic background informs her quest for spiritually laden forms.

'Things I Saw in the Sky' on display at BCC Shafer Art Gallery

A local non-profit and a local bar are partnering to bring awareness to the role alcohol can play in rape.

<a href="https://help4abuse.org/">Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services</a> and the Sip'N' Spin in Hays are sponsoring the second-annual <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/962164371489507">Rock Against Rape</a> at 8 p.m. Saturday at the bar, 209 W. 10th in Hays.

The event will be open to anyone 18 and older. It will be 18 to enter and 21 to drink alcohol. Although last year many younger people enjoyed the event, some ladies in their 70s also attended.

The cover charge will be $5 for those 21 and older and $10 for those younger than 21. The majority of the proceeds from the cover charge will be donated back to Options, according to a representative of the bar.

The event will feature bands Parl, Free Minded, Cactus Collateral, Kuwabara and What Remains. All of the bands are from northwest Kansas, which is Options' service area, said Aniston Weber, Options campus advocate.

The bands all fit into the rock genre but will bring a diverse offering to the event, including rock/rap, pop and metal. What Remains is an eighties cover band.

The event will help advertise Options' Safe Bar training. The free 45-minute training helps bar employees, and owners recognize signs a predator may be trying to use drugs or alcohol to take sexual advantage of someone.&nbsp;

Workers learn how to safely intervene, and Options helps bar owners identify dark places or corners that predators may take advantage of in their establishments.

"No matter how much you drink, no one deserves to be sexually assaulted," Weber said. "Alcohol is not the cause of rape. Rapists are the cause of rape."

Jennifer Hekcer, Options executive director, said several area bars have taken advantage of the Safe Bar Training. However, she acknowledged turnover tends to be high in the industry.

She said the Options staff member are happy to present the training again for free to any establishment.

"It's a great training and also trains the bar staff on how to protect themselves from sexual harassment and unwanted sexual advances from customers. We know bar owners don't want people to be hurt in their bars," Hecker said.

Hecker said the training helps bar staff and owners keep rapists from weaponizing alcohol.

"Bars are a big part of a community," Hecker said. "It's where we go to celebrate. It's where we go to mourn. It's where we go to have fun and to connect. Rapists aren't welcome in those places."

Hecker said as long as the community does not shine a light on the issue, sexual assaults will continue.

"We have to talk about it in the light of day or in the light of the bar," Hecker said. "We need to destigmatize talking about sexual assault."

&nbsp;Weber, who often works with students, said Hays is known for its drinking culture, particularly on campuses.

"People are going to use the means they have to assault people if that is what their prerogative is, and I think making sure we stand firm against that is important."&nbsp;

Hecker encouraged bystanders if they see something to say something.

Event T-shirts are for sale now through Wednesday. Rock Against Rape concert in Hays to raise awareness on alcohol's use in rape

Those decorating graves at Mt. Allen Cemetery in Hays this Memorial Day will see rows of brightly colored pinwheels in the children’s section.

Members of the Healing Hearts grief support group will hold their annual “Avenue of Pinwheels” ceremony at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, in the cemetery. The public is invited to attend.

Doris Schmidt, a Healing Hearts member who is helping to organize the event, said the observance is for parents who have lost a child, regardless of that child’s age. It is also for others impacted by a child’s death. That can include grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, friends, even teachers.

At the ceremony, the pinwheels are available free of charge to all participants. People can place a note on the pinwheel with the child’s name and write a personal message, Schmidt said. At the ceremony, all of the names are read aloud.

Then the pinwheels are hammered into the ground by another Healing Hearts member, Neal Younger. At last year’s ceremony there were around 100 pinwheels, Schmidt said. The pinwheels are placed in two long rows facing each other, thus creating “The Avenue of Pinwheels.”

The ceremony also includes singing and prayers. The event always ends with a balloon release. Participants may also write notes on their balloons before sending them skyward. Schmidt thanked Five-Star Auto and Towing in Hays for providing the helium-filled balloons for this year’s event.

Schmidt emphasized that the individual being honored does not have to be buried at Mt. Allen. Schmidt’s own son, who died at the age of 25, is buried in the Catherine Cemetery.

“This is just a local observance because all of our meetings are in Hays. Hays is centrally located,” Schmidt said.

The Healing Hearts group is part of The Center for Life Experience (CFLE) in Hays, which also has other types of grief support groups. Healing Hearts meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Thursday of the month at the CFLE office, 103C E. 27th&nbsp;St.

Following the ceremony, participants are invited back to CFLE for refreshments. Younger said in case of inclement weather, the observance will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 25.

The pinwheels are left up at Mt. Allen until after Memorial Day. Then members of Healing Arts pick them up. Schmidt said. New pinwheel notes are laminated to protect them from the elements. Any damaged pinwheels are replaced. Then the pinwheels are safely stored until the following year. Individuals who want to keep their child’s pinwheel are welcome to do so.

Those who cannot attend the event are welcome to come to the cemetery any time before Memorial Day and place their own pinwheel, she said.

Healing Hearts began in 2001. In 2006, the group placed a marker in the cemetery’s children’s area and planted a tree. The marker reads: “In memory of our sons and daughters. As parents, we celebrate the lives of our beloved children and hold in our hearts an everlasting love for them.”

Schmidt said that seeing the multi-colored pinwheels spinning in the evening breeze is always an emotional moment for her. Like each participant, she knows that her child’s life was cut short. But the memories remain, she said.

“We cannot share holidays with our child. This is a way to remember and honor them and to pray.”&nbsp;

Annual ceremony in Hays will honor deceased children

“Round `em up and ride” to the Hays Public Library for the Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest on Friday, May 19 at 6 p.m.&nbsp; Cowboy poets will be competing to see who is the best rhymer of the west.

The Hays Public Library, 1205 Main Street, will be hosting this regional contest for those presenting original cowboy poetry:&nbsp; rhyming verse with a western theme.&nbsp; Poets will be presenting in two categories:&nbsp; Serious and Humorous.&nbsp; Contestants are judged on quality, theme, and presentation. The winning poets advance to the state finals, to be held on June 9 in Manhattan.

Anyone is welcome to enter the contest as long as the poems which they present are their original writing.&nbsp; Entries can be submitted online at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.cowboypoetrycontest.com/" target="_blank">www.cowboypoetrycontest.com</a>.

TMP-M youth girls basketball camp enrollment open

LOGAN - High school students with an interest in the creative arts, music or performance have the unique opportunity to gather with other students and spend a week in June composing, choreographing, and performing an original musical theater production.

Openings are still available for incoming high school freshmen to outgoing college freshmen who want to participate in Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts workshops in Hays, Phillipsburg, or Concordia. Students from surrounding communities are encouraged to participate in a workshop closest to them.&nbsp;

To register, visit&nbsp;<a href="http://www.lovewell.org/" target="_blank">www.lovewell.org</a>, and click on Apply, and then Kansas.

In just five days, students write, choreograph, compose, design, rehearse and perform an original piece of musical theater in collaboration with Lovewell’s professional artists. No previous music or theater experience is required, and students from all different creative backgrounds are encouraged to participate.

From June 5-9, a residential camp will be held at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;&nbsp;Students arrive on Sunday evening, June 4, and stay in the residence hall on campus. The performance will be Friday evening, June 9, at the Felten Theater in Malloy Hall, followed by checkout.

From June 12-16, a daytime workshop will be held at Concordia’s Brown Grand Theatre.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hours are&nbsp;9 a.m. to 5 p.m.&nbsp;June 12, 13 and 14; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 15; 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 16; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 17 — Performance at 1 p.m.

From June 19–23, a daytime workshop will be held at the Phillipsburg Huck Boyd Center.&nbsp;Hours are&nbsp;9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 19, 20 and 21; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 22; and 9 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. June 23— Performance at 7 p.m.

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation is underwriting the cost of workshops. 

For students who live in the Foundation’s 26-county service area, the participation fee is significantly discounted to $50 for daytime workshops.&nbsp;Students who wish to participate in the Hays workshop without staying in the dorms may register as daytime workshop participants, or $90 would cover five lunches in addition to the participation fee. Room, board and participation fee for a double-occupancy dorm room is $250 for the week. Total cost in a single room is $325.

No student in the Hansen Foundation service area who wants to participate will be denied the opportunity due to inability to pay. Scholarships are available.

This is the sixth summer the Lovewell workshops have been offered in Kansas.&nbsp; The response to Lovewell, a nonprofit that started in Kansas and is now based in Florida, from students and faculty involved has been overwhelmingly positive.
