Hays High School JAG-K  Review: February edition

COLBY — Colby Community College will host the annual Art on the Oasis art show on March 3, 4 and 5 in the Bedker Memorial Complex and the Cultural Arts Center Gallery. The event features art by high school, amateur and professional artists from around the region.

The opening gala is on March 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. Viewing continues Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

“We’ll have unique food, music, awards, and opportunities to purchase art,” said organizer Rebel Mahieu. “Besides local entries, we have pieces from Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, CCC and Fort Hays State students, and works from as far as Greensburg, McCook, Nebraska, and around the area. There will also be live music by the Detherage/Engel band from Hays.”

MCPHERSON — Two Wheat 
Rx Schools in early March will share the latest research recommendations
 for intensive wheat management, the value of wheat as part of crop 
rotations and cover cropping as well as provide updates on wheat 
breeding pipelines. The educational events — scheduled for March 7 in 
McPherson and March 8 in Russell — are part of a partnership between the
 Kansas Wheat Commission and K-State Research and Extension to 
disseminate the latest research recommendations for high-yielding and 
high-quality wheat to Kansas wheat farmers.

“While we can’t 
control the weather, there are practices and tools that farmers can use 
to improve yield and quality of their wheat crop,” said Aaron Harries, 
vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat. “The Wheat 
Rx Schools share the latest research findings for suggested management 
practices to economically and sustainably produce wheat in Kansas.”

Both
 schools will follow similar agendas. Dr. Brett Carver, regents 
professor of wheat breeding and genetics at Oklahoma State University, 
will discuss ongoing collaborations between OSU, K-State and the Wheat 
Marketing Center to improve yield and quality of hard winter wheat in 
the Great Plains.

Next, Dr. Romulo Lollato, wheat production 
specialist with K-State Research and Extension, will summarize long-term
 studies on wheat management in Kansas and the surrounding region. He 
will also discuss differing views on the intensive management of wheat 
from productivity, economic, environmental and human perspectives.

Then,
 Luana Simão, a K-State doctoral student, will review the benefits of 
including wheat in a crop rotation, including wheat residue management 
for weed suppression and soil water conservation.

Finally, Carlos 
Bonini Pires, a K-State doctoral student, will review CASH — cover 
crops, agronomy and soil health — including what benefits summer and 
winter cover crops bring to a cropping system and how to utilize 
precision cover cropping.

At the March 7 McPherson event, E.G. 
Herl, Vice President — Grain &amp; Logistics, and Reuben McLean, Sr. 
Director of Quality &amp; Regulatory from Grain Craft will provide an 
industry perspective on wheat quality and discuss how growers can 
capture value of high-quality grain.

During the March 8 Russell 
Wheat Rx School, the industry perspective will be provided by PureField 
Ingredients, the largest domestic supplier of wheat protein in the 
United States. Attendees will hear how PureField Ingredients is 
continuing to research how to better secure wheat supplies by combining 
contracts for farmers, agreements with cooperatives and specific 
agronomic practices to hopefully produce the highest quality wheat 
possible.

“Wheat producers put considerable thought into their 
decisions throughout the growing season that impact that final harvest,”
 Harries said. “Our goal is to share the latest research, funded in part
 by farmers’ investments through their checkoff dollars, to help 
maximize profitability through management.”

Registration for 
either event is $110 for non-members of the Kansas Association of Wheat 
Growers. KAWG members receive one free Wheat Rx registration — including
 new members. Lunch and meeting materials are included with the 
registration fee.

GREAT BEND - Barton Community College invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to a celebratory groundbreaking event for the College’s new Ag and Transportation Complex at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the future site of the complex on the east side of campus. Parking will be available in the east lot outside of the Technical Building.

Upon completion, the facility will be home to new classrooms for high-demand programs including Agriculture Business Management, Crop Protection, Beef Cattle Production, and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). It will also house the highly anticipated Case New Holland (CNH) Top Tech Industrial Training program.

The estimated construction cost of $3.6 million is funded by a 1:1 matching grant of federal stimulus funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) issued by the Kansas Department of Commerce and private donations. The State of Kansas has also approved tax credits to be used for capital improvements by community and technical colleges. These 60 percent tax credits are available first-come, first-served.

Harbin Construction out of Salina was awarded the contract for the project and will begin construction immediately. The project is projected to be completed in early 2024.

BUNKER HILL —&nbsp;Research shows more and more families find PBS KIDS programs anytime, anywhere in digital spaces – watching on smart devices and the internet, as well as traditional television.&nbsp; The PBS KIDS 24/7 multicast channel, also distributed as a streaming service, is where many kids in the Smoky Hills PBS viewing area are turning to catch Smoky Hills PBS’s children’s programs.

PBS KIDS programs prepare kids for school and lead them to a bright future, but as more Kansans watch on their own schedule, Smoky Hills PBS is changing its daytime schedule.

Beginning Feb. 27, Smoky Hills PBS’s daytime PBS KIDS programming block will run from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and then pick up again from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the weekdays. 

There will be a block of time from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for general audience programming.&nbsp; Smoky Hills PBS will start running the Downton Abbey series at 12 p.m., during this general audience block, and then switch over to how-to programs including cooking, travel, and lifestyle programming coming in April.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Our aim is to meet our audience where they are,” said Betsy Schwien, general manager of Smoky Hills PBS.&nbsp; “Right now, we find that this move will benefit both our youngest viewers and also our adult viewers, bringing them programming in the afternoons that they too can enjoy.”

World Water Day is an annual observance focusing on the importance of water. 

To celebrate, the City of Hays and the KSU Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds are once again
partnering to host a World Water Day Fun Fest from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 14t, at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. 

This free event will feature fun, hands-on, "water-related"
activities for kids of all ages. In addition, educational information regarding water conservation
and water quality will be provided.

Tickets for the Wonder Women League's signature fundraising dinner, the Power of the Purse, are on sale now.

The event will be Thursday, March 23, at the Hilton Garden Inn. A social hour will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner served at 6 p.m.&nbsp;

The featured speaker will be Miss Kansas Ayanna Hensley. Hensley's social impact initiative as Miss Kansas is ACE's Low: Overcoming Adverse Childhood Experiences.&nbsp;

Her focus for the initiative is to help promote an ideology centered on assisting youth to digest and overcome adversity. Most traumatic situations a child faces will correlate to lifelong problems.

As an individual directly affected by severe trauma, Hensley knows what a child needs to overcome their realities and break their generation cycles.

The Power of the Purse also features a purse raffle and silent and live purse auctions.

Seventy purses have already been donated this year for the event.

Proceeds from the event will be split between the Wonder Women League and the United Way of Ellis County, the league's umbrella organization.

Seating is limited for Power of the Purse. Tickets are $45. Tables of eight are available for $340. RSVP by March 3.

The league's signature projects include <a href="https://archive.hayspost.com/2019/02/27/matthews-gift-offers-necessities-to-families-during-medical-emergencies/">Matthew's Gift</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/336fc3f8-1b07-4dc5-8962-e533cf7acf54">Project Suitcase</a>.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/6a8a81eb-b943-4645-ad80-3388f6690265">Women's Scholarship</a>.&nbsp;is in its inaugural year after a raffle to support the project was conducted last year. Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this year. The deadline for the scholarships is March 1.

The group meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:15 p.m. at the Venue in Hays. The league is always accepting new members and welcomes guests at those meetings. Annual dues are $50. Those interested in membership can also call the United Way office at&nbsp;785-628-8281.

Gun raffle will benefit Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center

Mark your calendars! One of the larger spring farm shows in the Midwest is coming to Salina in March.

The 58th annual Mid America Farm Expo is scheduled for March 22-24, the Salina Chamber of Commerce announced this morning. Hours will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. March 22-23 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. March 24.

The expo, which draws more than 5,000 attendees over three days, will be headquartered at Tony's Pizza Events Center (TPEC), 800 The Midway, with displays also across the street in the Saline County Livestock &amp; Expo Center's Ag Hall, and outdoors in front of Ag Hall and in the TPEC west parking lot.

The latest in farm technology, equipment, and supplies will be on display in approximately 250 exhibits, including some expo exhibit favorites as well as several new exhibits, the chamber noted.

The expo also will feature a variety of seminars by agriculture leaders, including the following.

Eagle Radio tower work begins Monday

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to close a portion of K-383 in Norton County for reconstruction starting on Monday, March 13.

The closure will begin at the east U.S. 36 junction and extend approximately 6 miles northeast to the Prairie Dog Creek bridge near Almena. Traffic should follow the signed detour route on U.S. 36 and U.S. 183.

Project activities will consist of widening the highway on existing alignment into a 24-foot mainline surface with 6-foot paved shoulders. Crews will also decrease side slopes and level hills and valleys, which will help improve visibility and increase passing opportunities. Several drainage structures along the route will be replaced as well.

KDOT expects to reopen the highway by the end of 2023, conditions permitting. Venture Corporation of Great Bend is the primary contractor with total contract cost of approximately $15.3 million.

This project is the second phase of reconstruction on 26 miles of K-383 in Norton and Phillips counties. Phase I consisted of approximately 6 miles from east of Long Island to the U.S. 183 junction. Phase III is the remaining 14 miles from Almena to east of Long Island. KDOT is currently finalizing the design plan for phase III and anticipates letting the project for construction in spring 2025.

A musical triple treat is coming to Salina's Stiefel Theatre in August.

Jane Gates, Stiefel executive director, announced Thursday that Trombone Shorty &amp; Orleans Avenue and Ziggy Marley with Mavis Staples are scheduled to perform beginning at 7 p.m. Aug. 12 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

It’s been a remarkable year for&nbsp;Trombone Shorty, who released his most recent album, Lifted, last April. He performed “Shotgun” at the MusiCares Person of the Year event honoring Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson during Grammy week this month and also performed at the Grammy Salute to Paul Simon Concert which aired this past December on CBS. Additional television appearances in 2022 included the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, ESPN’s Sportscenter, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Good Morning America.

Ziggy Marley&nbsp;is an eight-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner, musician, producer, activist and humanitarian who has cultivated a legendary career for close to 40 years. The eldest son of Bob and Rita Marley, Ziggy has hewed his own path as a musical pioneer, infusing the reggae genre with funk, blues, rock and other elements through mindful songcraft. Equal parts master storyteller and motivational guide, he deftly explores issues from environmental awareness to self-empowerment, social injustice to political inequity, while returning again and again to the transformative power of love. It’s impossible to listen to a voice like&nbsp;Mavis Staples’ without contemplating all she’s been through in her life—the album cover features a heartrending Gordon Parks photo that speaks to the casual cruelty of racial segregation in 1950’s Alabama—but it only serves to make her optimism and resilience that much more inspiring and contagious. There is darkness and doubt on the album to be sure (the spirit of Pops Staples informs the mournful “Heavy On My Mind,” which recognizes that some wounds never heal, while the poignant “Never Needed Anyone” stings with the pain of lingering regret) but it’s consistently overpowered by hope and conviction. “Been holding on too long to let go / Running too hard to slow down / Believing too deep to not have faith,” Staples confesses on the soulful “One More Change To Make.” In that sense, the album’s title is more than just an observation. When Staples and Harper join forces to sing “We Get By,” it’s a prayer, a promise, an invitation.

“I sing because I want to leave people feeling better than I found them,” Staples concludes. “I want them to walk away with a positive message in their hearts, feeling stronger than they felt before. I’m singing to myself for those same reasons, too.”

Even the messenger needs a reminder every now and then.

Northwest Tech announces fall 2022 honors lists 

SALINA — Ben Folds is bringing his What Matters Most Tour to Salina in August.

Folds is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Aug. 11 in downtown Salina's Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Tickets start at $69 and are scheduled to go on sale at noon Friday. Buy online at: <a href="http://www.stiefeltheatre.org">www.stiefeltheatre.org</a>
 or by calling the Stiefel at 785-827-1998. The Stiefel box office is 
open for phone or walk-up sales from noon-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

About the artist from the Stiefel Theatre

Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation.

He's
 created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop 
albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous 
collaborative records.

For over a decade he's performed with some 
of the world's greatest symphony orchestras and currently serves as the 
first-ever artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the 
Kennedy Center.

Folds released his first book - a collection of 
interrelated essays, anecdotes and lessons about art, life and music - 
in 2019, which debuted as a New York Times Best Seller, and he hosted a 
podcast series spinoff of his book titled Lightning Bugs: Conversations 
with Ben Folds. In addition to solo rock and orchestral touring, he's 
also developing a new unscripted tv series with Fred Rogers Productions,
 continues to appear in various film/tv guest starring roles, and is 
working on two new albums.

An outspoken champion for arts 
education and music therapy funding in our nation's public schools, 
Folds has served for more than five years as an active member of the 
distinguished Artist Committee of Americans For The Arts (AFTA) and 
serves on the Board of AFTA's Arts Action Fund.
