CVB: January events in Hays

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas will be getting new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) thanks to a $7,200 grant from the Heartland Community Foundation. The AEDs will be utilized in four of its residential living locations in Ellis County that serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The AEDs will allow DSNWK staff to be better equipped for cardiac arrest-type situations should they occur. Having AEDs in all DSNWK locations helps increase the ability to implement EMS advice on-site to save the life of someone as they wait for an emergency responder to arrive on scene. All DSNWK staff are trained to use the AED devices through its staff training program.

“DSNWK hopes never to be put into a situation where an AED is needed,” states Jerry Michaud, DSNWK President.&nbsp; “This grant will help us secure these life sustaining devices.&nbsp; With them we are better prepared for these time sensitive situations with the right equipment to ensure the best care and response, especially as our population continues to age.” &nbsp;

DSNWK is a 501(c)3 nonprofit serving 18 counties in northwest Kansas with a mission to advocate for persons with disabilities and those who care about them by planning and supporting a life of dignity, interdependence, and personal satisfaction in the community. &nbsp;

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of Schoenchen public water supply system, located in Ellis County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure due to a water main break. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Schoenchen indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Wildfire recovery meeting set in Natoma

Throughout the days of December 15 – 17, the Ellis County Fire Department spent approximately 1,711 working hours between 77 firefighters on scene, extinguishing the wildfires in Ellis County. 

During those days approximately 55,424 acres of grasslands burned, and unfortunately, 10 homes, 17 other structures, and a business burned down which has impacted many families and their livelihoods. 

During those days, so many people showed their support not just to those who had lost everything, but also to the firefighters of the Ellis County Fire Department. 

We have tried to create a list to thank everyone who helped in so many ways. Some have asked to not be mentioned but thank you as well as you know who you are.&nbsp;

Our deepest thank you for your support to the Ellis County Fire Department to the following:

to the free disposal site located north of the Public Works building at 
1002 Vine Street. &nbsp;This area is right next to the bathrooms at Speier 
ball fields. &nbsp;Place the trees on the east side of the bathrooms.

 will be posted to direct citizens. &nbsp;Please remove all plastic, 
ornaments and lights before leaving the tree. &nbsp;The disposal site will be
 open though Monday, Jan. 10. &nbsp;

 Energy will provide personnel and a wood chipper to chip the trees to 
make mulch. &nbsp;The mulch will be placed at the Parks Department on the 183
 Bypass and is available for pickup free of charge.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

The advisory took effect on&nbsp;Dec. 19 and&nbsp;will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.&nbsp;KDHE issued the advisory&nbsp;because&nbsp;of a&nbsp;&nbsp;loss of electrical service&nbsp;at a pumping booster station&nbsp;caused&nbsp;a loss of&nbsp;water&nbsp;pressure&nbsp;in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals&nbsp;and&nbsp;possible&nbsp;bacterial&nbsp;contamination.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Typical holiday festivities—caroling, decorating, buying gifts, Christmas parties, family gatherings—leave little room for feelings of pain or grief, and we experience feelings of isolation. Our spirits sink as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us.&nbsp;

In response, the Parish Nurse Ministry offers The Longest Night Service, offering a somber, gentle space for the community to gather on the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. The service is simple: candles are lit, scripture is read, and the focus is on personal needs in an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. This non-denominational worship experience is a way to acknowledge the reality of difficult or painful life circumstances, while still recognizing that part of the reason for Jesus’ coming was to bring hope and comfort, to heal the sick, to seek the lost, to restore the broken and broken-hearted. This is a quiet meditative time for remembering, sharing our hurting places with God, and preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ.

Those who do experience this season as a happy time can also find meaning in The Longest Night Service, as it serves as a time of quiet retreat from the hectic nature of the commercial aspect of the season and guides worshippers back to the real meaning of Christmas.

The Longest Night Service will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 338 N. 7th St. in WaKeeney. The service will be followed by an opportunity to pray or meditate in the sanctuary for those who wish to do so. Longest Night Service scheduled in WaKeeney

The Heartland Community Foundation has established three Disaster Relief Funds to meet the emergency needs in each Ellis, Rooks, and Trego Counties. The Ellis County Disaster Relief Fund, the Rooks County Disaster Relief Fund, and the Trego County Disaster Relief Fund will be able to grant immediate money to nonprofit organizations offering relief services in the impacted areas — following a major emergency, weather event, or other disaster, like the windstorm and wildfires our region experienced on Wednesday.

Nonprofit organizations, schools, churches, and other agencies that are providing direct relief help to people, property, or livestock in the impacted county may be eligible for grant money. Charitable organizations may apply by contacting Sarah Meitner, HCF Executive Director, at (785) 621-4090 or&nbsp;<a href="mailto:sarahmeitner@gscf.org">sarahmeitner@gscf.org</a>. Application deadline is Jan. 21.

Heartland is encouraging residents and businesses to make a tax-deductible donation to their county’s Disaster Relief Fund. The money donated in each county will only be used to make grants to agencies serving that county. The impact of a $100 or $1,000 donation is much larger when combined with the donations of others.

Donations to the Disaster Relief Funds will be accepted at any time, now and beyond. It is our hope that with continued donations and investment growth over time, money held in the fund will provide a permanent safety net to local residents in the aftermath of an emergency.

MANHATTAN — Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) is collaborating with the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) and the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) to coordinate resources and donations following the devastating wildfires and high winds on Dec. 15. “We know Farm Bureau members of Kansas are willing and eager to help their fellow farmers and ranchers in need,” says KFB President Rich Felts. “We know from past recovery efforts, disaster assistance is most effective if it’s delivered quickly. That’s why we’re partnering with KDA and KLA to get information and relief to farmers and ranchers as fast as possible.” The KDA&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=a01013ca2e&amp;e=5bf0f0e5fe" target="_blank">resource page</a>&nbsp;is the best source for those wishing to help with hay and other supplies. Dubbed the Four County Fire, the wind not only fueled the blaze, it hampered firefighters from finding it initially. “Hell would be the best way to describe it,” says Russell County Fire Chief Dustin Finkenbinder. “The dust was so bad we couldn’t see the fire. All we could do was rely on smell.” Finkenbinder says the fire had burned about two miles by the time crews arrived on site before eventually growing 10 to 12 miles wide. More than 24 hours after the initial call, he was still monitoring smoldering bale piles and other hot spots for embers that could ignite new fires.
