ELLIS — Congratulations to King and Queen, Kamden Keller and Natalee North, who were crowned at our football game on Friday, September 20. 

  Ellis High School had a fabulous week celebrating homecoming!  The class of 2025, the senior class, were the overall spirit winners.  The junior class won best float featuring Candy Land. 

 The seniors and juniors continued their winning streak by defeating the faculty and staff in volleyball.

Community Foundation of Ellis awards grants to support local organizations

The Ellis Alliance was presented a Kansas tourism marketing grant from the Kansas Tourism division of the Kansas Department of Commerce during a ceremony Monday afternoon in Ellis with state officials from Topeka.

The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ellisalliance/">Ellis Alliance</a> is a storefront and an umbrella organization that houses the Ellis Chamber of Commerce, the Community Foundation and the Ellis Development Corporation.&nbsp;

Alicia Flower, who was hired as the Alliance executive director in April, submitted the grant application in mid-summer.

Bridgette Jobe, Kansas Tourism director, presented the oversized cardboard check for $1,908.78 to Flower and Alliance board members&nbsp;Jolene Niernberger,&nbsp;Pauleen Edmonds and&nbsp;Travis Kohlrus, along with Mayor Dave McDaniel.

The grant dollars will be used to promote and market Ellis to the public, especially out-of-town visitors.

"We were so excited when we saw your application come in," Jobe said. "I think this is so smart. ... "You're trying to market your community, and you have to have good assets."&nbsp;

Those assets will soon include an Ellis Alliance website and a closed-circuit video monitor in the office, on which community events and Alliance information will be promoted.

The Alliance office is in the heart of downtown at 820 Washington St.

"The whole purpose of this tourism grant is to help first-time marketing projects get off the ground. That's really what these are for," Jobe said. "That's exactly what intrigued us, and we wanted to help you."

The Ellis promotional project will include updated photography and other media.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"My husband and I just recently moved to Ellis and we have fallen in love with it," Flower said. "It's just so pretty and charming, and there aren't current photographs of it.

"I also want to get a commercial made highlighting just what Ellis is, to promote it, that would play on the TV."

Jobe said once the assets of good photography, videography and art are acquired, they could be used in multiple ways.

"You could use them on social media, online, in printed publications, billboards. There's so many great ways to use them down the road, but you have to have great photos.

"It's something we invest in heavily each year, new assets, and you're really smart to do that," Jobe said. 

"We love being able to help these new projects. I don't know that we've done a whole lot in Ellis before."

Alliance board president Travis Kohlrus said Ellis differs from other communities because the Alliance combines several entities.

"We've been doing this for about 20 years. We're small enough that we can't have a chamber office, a foundation office, a [economic] development office. So the alliance represents all of us. ... We do lots of volunteering in a small town," Kohlrus said.

Flower hopes to see more local volunteers get involved in community projects and programs, especially young families. She and her husband have a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old, and they wanted to find out what activities were available as they grew their family.

"Once young families have more knowledge about what Ellis has to offer, I think they'll turn out," she said.

Flower also said she believes community events will attract a greater number of area visitors once they know what's happening in Ellis.

Ellis's summer art walk and the "Follow the Star" holiday retail promotion are two popular events.&nbsp;

The new Ellis Historic Walking Trail will debut on Sept. 27 with a ribbon cutting.&nbsp;The Community Foundation of Ellis sponsors and funds the trail.

Ellis Alliance receives state tourism marketing grant

Ellis USD 388 showed off the work for its completed $4.55 million bond projects during an open house on Tuesday night.

Work was completed on Washington Elementary School and Ellis Jr./Sr. High School.

Work at the high school included renovations to the junior high and high school science rooms.

The fixed tables were replaced by tables on wheels so the teachers could rearrange the space as needed for activities and experiments. Both rooms also have additional storage.

The main office at the junior high/high school was remodeled to include a secure entrance. Other exterior doors and part of the roof were replaced.&nbsp;

The flooring throughout Washington Elementary School was replaced. The new floors will not require waxing.

About $2.38 million of the bond was budgeted to replace the HVAC system at the elementary school.

The school was being cooled by window air-conditioning units, which Principal John Befort said were noisy.&nbsp;

He said the boiler system was more than 25 years old, well beyond its lifespan.

He anticipates the new system will be more energy efficient and provide a more comfortable climate for students and staff in the classrooms.

About 60 percent of Washington Elementary School's roof was replaced, but Befort said the district hopes to replace the rest of the roof within the next year through insurance funds from hail damage and capital outlay money.

Superintendent&nbsp;Janice Wilson said she was grateful to the Ellis community for supporting the bond.

&nbsp;"We want to thank the Ellis community for seeing the need. That's really the big thing. It's been a great process. I feel we got done what the community expected," Wilson said. "Hopefully, there's a bond in the future to address some more of the maintenance things."

Ellis USD 388 shows off completed bond projects

The Ellis USD 388 school board voted during a special meeting on Aug. 16 to suspend implementation of a new random drug testing policy.

The policy was included in the 2024-25 school handbook and was set to take effect this fall. It would have required random drug testing of students participating in Kansas State High School Activities Association activities by an outside firm.

However, parents expressed concerns about a lack of communication about the policy with parents, a lack of a clear implementation plan and cost.

Board member Latisha Haag said the policy was created because of issues with drug use last school year.

"We started this process last January because we had coaches come to us because we have students coming to practices who were clearly under the influence of something," Haag said.

"It was not only hindering that student's participation. It was hindering other students' participation because practices had to stop. At one point, an ambulance had to be called and, on the ride over, that particular coach in the ambulance learned that person was under the influence," she said.

Haag added, “It’s happening in our schools. I don’t think we have a problem, but it’s present. I think that is something we need to make sure people understand.”

The committee that created the policy included administrators, a law enforcement officer, teachers, a coach and a school nurse.

The drug policy was approved during a special meeting on Aug. 5. Board members said the final vote was delayed because the district was waiting to hire a new high school/junior high principal.

However, the board wanted to approve the policy for inclusion in the student handbook for the 2024-25 school year.

Drug testing was set to apply only to students in KSHAA activities in grades nine through 12. High school parents were emailed to inform them of the new policy.

At the Aug. 16 meeting, some parents said they were not opposed to drug testing, but they wanted to know more about implementation and wished the communication with parents had been better.

Board members said they saw the testing as a deterrent and a way to get students who might have drug issues help.

"It is not meant to punish students. It is meant as a deterrent if there is a problem to identify it and to provide that student help," board member&nbsp;Brian Shannon said.

Parents expressed concerns about student privacy and cost.

According to the board, only a school administrator, the testing company, the student and the student's parents would have access to the test results.&nbsp;

The estimated test costs were $60 to $70 per student.

The board had not yet determined what substances it would test for. However, they said it would not include alcohol or nicotine.

Shannon said law enforcement would only be contacted if a student was found in possession of illegal substances on school property.

“If we have one student using drugs, it’s a problem. It’s not a pandemic. Do we wait until there are 10 students before we address it? Do we wait until there are 50 students before we address it?" he said.

Although Haag ultimately voted with the board to suspend the testing's implementation, she said she thought it should not be postponed until next year.

“We have been looking at this since last December. We did not do this willy-nilly. We started talking to people and asking questions clear back in January,” she said. “If you watch the board meetings, they’re on there.”

Board member Cindy Hertel said she thought the district should wait to start the testing.

&nbsp;“We have a small enough school that there are very few students this is not going to touch,” she said. “It’s not targeted toward athletes. It’s to keep people from doing it. I also understand that we need more answers.”

No timeline was given for when the policy would be implemented.

Below is the full Ellis public school substance abuse policy, including the section on random drug testing.

ATHLETIC AND ACTIVITY SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY:

*Possession or use of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, and other controlled substances.

*Cheerleading is classified by KSHSAA as a sport during an athletic season and an organization when no cheering sports are in season.

** A cheering event is one night of cheering regardless of how many games are included.

During this period of ineligibility, the student will practice and participate in team activities/meetings. The student may attend competitions at the coach’s discretion but will not dress out.

Non-Athletic – the student will lose eligibility through the next major event sponsored or attended by the organization. During this time the student will attend organizational meetings and participate in fundraising events.

Students will also miss the next major social event i.e. Homecoming, Snoball, Prom or other school events as determined by administration.&nbsp; Officers of an organization violating this policy will be removed from office, but not the organization.

In the event that more than one organization is involved, the sponsors will meet to determine the consequences.

The organizations’ sponsors shall be responsible for determining “major events”.&nbsp;

Athletic – the student will be ineligible to participate in athletics for the remainder of the year (ALL SPORTS)

Non-Athletic – The student will be dismissed from ALL non-athletic student organizations for the remainder of the school year and not be allowed to attend all remaining social events. (i.e. Prom, Homecoming, etc.)

In addition to consequences from KSHSAA Activities, students will also be subject to the following academic consequences related to the school day;

It would have required random drug testing of students participating in Kansas State High School Activities Association activities by an outside firm.However, parents expressed concerns about a lack of communication about the policy with parents, a lack of a clear implementation plan and cost.Board member Latisha Haag said the policy was created because of issues with drug use last school year."We started this process last January because we had coaches come to us because we have students coming to practices who were clearly under the influence of something," Haag said."It was not only hindering that student's participation. It was hindering other students' participation because practices had to stop. At one point, an ambulance had to be called and, on the ride over, that particular coach in the ambulance learned that person was under the influence," she said.Haag added, “It’s happening in our schools. I don’t think we have a problem, but it’s present. I think that is something we need to make sure people understand.”The committee that created the policy included administrators, a law enforcement officer, teachers, a coach and a school nurse.It did not include parents or students.The drug policy was approved during a special meeting on Aug. 5. Board members said the final vote was delayed because the district was waiting to hire a new high school/junior high principal.However, the board wanted to approve the policy for inclusion in the student handbook for the 2024-25 school year.Drug testing was set to apply only to students in KSHAA activities in grades nine through 12. High school parents were emailed to inform them of the new policy.At the Aug. 16 meeting, some parents said they were not opposed to drug testing, but they wanted to know more about implementation and wished the communication with parents had been better.Board members said they saw the testing as a deterrent and a way to get students who might have drug issues help."It is not meant to punish students. It is meant as a deterrent if there is a problem to identify it and to provide that student help," board member&nbsp;Brian Shannon said.Parents expressed concerns about student privacy and cost.According to the board, only a school administrator, the testing company, the student and the student's parents would have access to the test results.&nbsp;The estimated test costs were $60 to $70 per student.The board had not yet determined what substances it would test for. However, they said it would not include alcohol or nicotine.Shannon said law enforcement would only be contacted if a student was found in possession of illegal substances on school property.“If we have one student using drugs, it’s a problem. It’s not a pandemic. Do we wait until there are 10 students before we address it? Do we wait until there are 50 students before we address it?" he said.Although Haag ultimately voted with the board to suspend the testing's implementation, she said she thought it should not be postponed until next year.“We have been looking at this since last December. We did not do this willy-nilly. We started talking to people and asking questions clear back in January,” she said. “If you watch the board meetings, they’re on there.”Board member Cindy Hertel said she thought the district should wait to start the testing.&nbsp;“We have a small enough school that there are very few students this is not going to touch,” she said. “It’s not targeted toward athletes. It’s to keep people from doing it. I also understand that we need more answers.”No timeline was given for when the policy would be implemented.Below is the full Ellis public school substance abuse policy, including the section on random drug testing.----ATHLETIC AND ACTIVITY SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY:*Possession or use of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, and other controlled substances.<ul>
 <li>Students involved in school sponsored athletic programs or non-athletic extracurricular student organizations are subject to this policy, which applies to those students 24 hours per day, any place, and between seasons. The consequences will apply to both athletic and all non-athletic organizations. This policy may not cover every possible scenario. Some interpretation will be left up to the coach/sponsor and administration.&nbsp;</li><li>Use and/or possession or promotion of any tobacco product or nicotine delivery device by students is prohibited in any district facility; in school vehicles; at school-sponsored activities, programs or events; and on school owned or operated property.</li><li>Violations are to be substantiated by law enforcement, faculty/staff member, school administration, social-networking sites or other sources deemed credible by the following 3 people, coach/sponsor of sport or organization, Principal/AD.</li><li>It is a violation of this policy to be under the influence of, in possession of, using, distributing, selling, or attempting to sell any of the substances or devices listed above. Violations are subject to disciplinary action and/or legal action as determined by the administration. It is not a violation for a student to be in possession of a drug specifically prescribed for a student’s own use by his or her own doctor.</li><li>Students who are concerned about their substance abuse and voluntarily notify faculty or staff will not be subject to disciplinary action. Confidentiality will be observed while seeking and finding support for such a student. Ellis USD 388 suspends implementation of random drug testing policy

Meet Jesse Vincent, the new principal at Ellis Junior-Senior High School, focused on building strong connections and bringing fresh perspectives.

After spending the last several years working in central Kansas, Vincent returns to western Kansas to lead future generations of students and be closer to his family.

"I've always felt that Ellis was a prestigious institution, educationally and athletically, and was excited to put my name in the hat," he said.

Vincent graduated from Abilene High School in 1996 and earned his bachelor's degree in physical education and health from Sterling College.

He continued his studies at Fort Hays State University, earning a master's degree in building leadership in 2017.

Inspired by his physical education teacher, Tom Schwartz, Vincent served as his teacher's aide before stepping into Schwartz's role as the PE teacher, his first job in education.

Schwartz currently serves as the principal of Abilene High School.

"That's where I got my start and desire," Vincent said. "Years down the road, I decided that I wanted to continue and move up into the administration role."

Vincent returns to the area after teaching in the Grinnell School District and serving as the principal at Canton-Galva Junior-Senior High School.

Vincent said Ellis High is in a pristine state and doesn't need significant changes, but is eager to work with staff and teachers.

"I'm excited about the veteran staff that I have," he said. "There's a couple of new teachers that I think are going to be strong and good for us as well."

Vincent's daughter teaches fourth grade in Grinnell and is beginning a master's program to become a principal, with Vincent offering his guidance.

Vincent also has two sons attending Colorado State University, both of whom are on the football team. With his sons out of state, Vincent decided to relocate closer to his parents when the opportunity to lead Ellis High arose.

"I look forward to bringing a fresh perspective to this role," Vincent said. "I'm anxious to build relationships with everyone, share my views for the district, and where we're going to go and how we're getting there."

has been named the new Principal at Ellis Jr./Sr. High School.

In a post on the USD388 school website Vincent said, “I'm a graduate of Abilene High School and got my bachelor's
from Sterling College in physical education and health. This is my 11th year in administration. My
daughter teaches fourth grade in Grinnell, and my two boys attend Colorado State
University and are both on the football team.

All but four years of my career in
education has been spent in Western Kansas, and I am excited to be back! Ellis has a reputation of being a prestigious
educational institution, and I couldn't be more excited to be a Railroader!”

Severe thunderstorms in forecast for NW Kansas for tonight

Pedal through Kansas history on Saturday with the Tour Die Kapellen bike ride, a journey through small towns that immerses you in rich culture.

The fifth-annual Tour of Chapels features stops at St. Catherine Church in Catharine, The Basilica on the Plains in Victoria, Holy Cross Church in Pfeifer and St. Francis Church in Munjor.

Kay Werth, president of the Hays Area Bicyclists, said the concept originated to showcase Ellis County's history and culture while promoting health.

"We thought Ellis County had so much to offer," she said. "It promotes wellness, geography, limestone structures and beautiful landscapes."

The Hays Area Bicyclists is a nonprofit that supports health through cycling. The Tour of the Chapels was created as a joint effort among four rural communities in Ellis County to celebrate Volga-German heritage.

Cyclists can choose from a 15-mile casual ride to a 100-mile journey that begins at Hays Municipal Park, 100 Main St. While most routes are on asphalt roads, the 54-mile mixed-surface route includes 27 miles of gravel.

Depending on the route chosen, cyclists can pedal to <a href="https://www.volgagerman.net/catharine-church">St. Catherine Church</a> in Catharine, <a href="https://www.stfidelischurch.com/">The Basilica on the Plains</a> in Victoria, <a href="http://www.kansastravel.org/holycrosschurch.htm">Holy Cross Church</a> in Pfeifer and <a href="http://www.kansastravel.org/stfrancischurchmunjor.htm">St. Francis Church</a> in Munjor.

Routes of 75 to 100 miles begin with a self-start between 6:45 a.m. and 7 a.m., while the 15-mile ride departs at 9 a.m. Saturday. You can view the Tour of the Chapels' schedule of events <a href="https://tourdiekapellen.com/2024-ride/#schedule2024">here</a>.

Werth said the 15-mile casual ride is ideal for first-timers. It is led by three experienced cyclists to ensure guidance and safety.

"We call that a beginner route because it gets people introduced to riding on the tour and how to communicate with others that they're cycling with," she said.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Department will patrol the routes, while the Hays Police Department will assist in escorting the convoy of bikes out of the city.

Registration costs $55 per person for the bike ride and $85 per person for the bus tour. On-site registration opens Saturday at 6:30 a.m.

Riders will receive a free shirt, an authentic German meal and drink tickets, which are required for the post-ride meal. The registration form is available <a href="https://tourdiekapellen.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/2024-Registration-Form.pdf">here</a>.

This year, the bus tour has been reduced from two buses to one with limited space and limited meal tickets available for purchase. You can contact haysareabicyclists@gmail.com to check availability.

"We're back to one bus, which is OK because of the amount of time it takes people to get on and off the bus. We want them to have as much time in the churches as they can," Werth said.

The bus tour, led by Jerry Braun, a descendant of the Volga Germans who arrived in Ellis County from Russia in 1876, will depart at 8:30 a.m. after the cyclists have left the area.

With help from the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau and the <a href="https://www.hayssymphony.org/">Hays Symphony</a>, most of the profits will go to the Hays Symphony this year. Next year, the ride will continue the tradition of distributing funds to a different church each year.

"We're going to put this on a five-year basis and donate the money to the four main churches," Werth said on how the concept came to be. "The fifth year, we're going to give the bulk of the money to the symphony."

Founded in 1914, the Hays Symphony Orchestra is the longest-running orchestra in Kansas. Its about 60 musicians include Fort Hays State University students and faculty, Hays area volunteers and guest musicians from throughout the state.

With 90 volunteers at each stop, attendees can enjoy snacks, water and music from the Hays Symphony at every church, except for the Basilica of the Plains, which will feature a local brass choir.

The after-ride party will feature music by Simply Tone from noon to 2 p.m. Adult beverages from <a href="https://www.defiancebeer.com/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR3_YpogTbu4Jt_wmjMmKkK5fxJ-DwJwZJisOV35kCnTsA6YY_n488WKVHA_aem_12orRt0S62cUeBzj9KIxAg">Defiance Brewery Co.</a>,&nbsp;and non-alcoholic refreshments will be available.

German meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but dishes will be boxed up for anyone who misses this time window. Some of the food offered will include cream potatoes, dumplings and green beans. Vegan options will be provided by <a href="https://www.lbbrewing.com/">Gella's Diner and LB Brewing Co</a>.

There are 50 registered participants on the bus tour, and about 230 people have signed up for the bike ride through Ellis County.

Werth said riders are likely to consider the weather conditions before signing up for the ride, with the expectation of a hot Saturday.

"We all believe in the power of prayer. We've had such great weather the last four years, but this year looks like it's going to be hot," she said.

Fort Hays State University announces spring 2024 Deans' Honor Roll

For June 2024, the Ellis Police Department responded to 207 calls for service, conducted 38 traffic stops, and issued 3 traffic citations. Two of the three citations were for speeding, with the highest alleged speed being 20mph over the posted speed limit.

The Ellis Police Department also conducted several felony and misdemeanor investigations, resulting in one adult arrest.

The following adult was arrested in March by the Ellis Police Department:

On June 16, Isaac Henman was arrested on suspicion of aggravated domestic battery. He was booked into the Ellis County Jail.

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.

On June 20, the Ellis Police Department responded to a welfare check. Officers knew that the subject was out on bond with an ankle monitor, awaiting final sentencing to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Family members of the subject reported to officers that the subject had made suicidal remarks and believed the subject had serious intent of self-harm.

Officers attempted to knock at the residence's front door but received no answer. An officer observed a light on in the garage at the rear of the property. Officers approached the garage and heard an individual in obvious, agonizing distress.

Officers forced entry to the garage and observed that the subject of the welfare check had attempted suicide and was bleeding profusely. Officers immediately, and without hesitation, sprung into action; rendering immediate life-saving treatment and requested Ellis County Emergency Medical Services respond to the scene.

The subject of the welfare check survived their injuries because of the quick-thinking, training and experience of the officers who were on scene.

I would be remiss if I did not recognize and show appreciation to our local EMS and hospital system, as well as the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, for assisting us. Pending the outcome of legal proceedings, a full release on this incident will be made later.

BUNKER HILL — Smoky Hills PBS is proud to announce the airing of "Ellis Trail to Nicodemus," a compelling documentary that chronicles the journey of one family's quest for freedom and new beginnings in the West. This documentary is a story of the first large group of African Americans making the trek westward in 1877 from central Kentucky to the promised lands of Kansas.&nbsp; Their destination is Nicodemus, an all-black town on the high plains of western Kansas.&nbsp;

"Ellis Trail to Nicodemus" focuses on Emma Johnson-Williams, a newlywed and pregnant young woman, who travels with her parents and siblings in hopes of starting a new life in Nicodemus. The documentary highlights the challenges and triumphs faced by Emma and her family during their 35-mile journey on foot. Remarkably, just weeks after their arrival, Emma gives birth to the first baby born in Nicodemus, marking a significant milestone for the community.

This documentary offers a poignant glimpse into the lives of those who sought freedom and opportunity in the West, showcasing their resilience, determination, and the communal spirit that helped them overcome numerous obstacles.

Smoky Hills PBS to air 'Ellis Trail to Nicodemus'

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly announced that 12 communities, including <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/18fc3c3f-379c-47ee-bdf2-184442746c6c">Ellis</a>, and organizations will receive a combined $78,800 to allow 20 new murals and public art projects to revive public spaces and engage residents and visitors.

“Murals and public art installations welcome people to our rural communities while developing community pride and showcasing the rich history of our state,” Kelly said. “Investments in this program allow art to flourish and enhance public spaces for visitors and communities alike.”

The Office of Rural Prosperity’s Rural Mural Public Art grant program awardees are in communities across the state with a population of less than 15,000. The murals will highlight community gathering spaces and tourist attractions.

Each project requires a one-to-one match from the community, with the smallest of communities allowed to match the grant with in-kind donations. Seventy-five percent of the grant funding will be gifted upfront as several projects plan to start in the next few weeks.&nbsp;

“Working with local partners to develop compelling places across the state is one of the initiatives detailed in the Kansas Framework for Growth – our state’s economic development strategic plan,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “The Kelly-Toland administration is keenly focused on strengthening community assets that help keep younger Kansans interested in staying here. Every completed Rural Mural is a testament to that commitment.”

Since 2021, the Office of Rural Prosperity has funded 77 murals in 38 communities.&nbsp;
