Biola University welcomes Hays resident Jacobi Antonio as a new student

Tiger Station returns to Hays under the ownership of Verdant Bistro, which now operates Kluckin Chicken and Shirley's German To Go.

Tiger Station, 700 Main St., was previously home to Fusion by Manual and an old gas station.

Verdant Bistro Owner Austin Petz said he was given the opportunity to operate in the historic building and couldn't pass it up.

"We want to give Hays something local, better ingredients and cleaner ingredients while still maintaining that affordable price," Petz said.

Petz opened Verdant Bistro in August of last year and said opening Tiger Station aims to offer a more accessible dining choice.

While fast food options in Hays can fulfill that need, Petz strives to compete with corporate chains by offering quality ingredients.

The menu features the Tiger Station burger, the spicy boi burger, all-day breakfast items and local beer, which will be available soon.

"I have to recommend our tiger-style fries," Petz said. "I also have to definitely recommend our burnt-end tiger dog."

Additional menu items, like crispies and pretzel bites, evoke nostalgia for a gas station, matching the interior and exterior design.

The building features a wall with historic photos of Hays and the downtown area. The patio includes a Sinclair gas pump for display and outdoor seating that Petz plans to make the most of.

"The idea is to get a nice projector TV screen outside. You can expect us to be playing many of the Kansas City Chiefs football games," he said.

Petz said he would also like to implement an app with a reward system and offer midnight hours of operation at Tiger Station.

Tiger Station is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Petz aims to update Kluckin' Chicken and Shirley's German To Go, including plans for rebranding.

Petz said he would rename Kluckin' Chicken to Coupe and reinvent its menu, focusing on fresh, quality ingredients at an affordable price.

"I've heard a lot from the community and their thoughts," Petz said. "We're going to bring in some really great chicken sandwiches."&nbsp;

Given Hays's German heritage, Petz said that running Shirley's German To Go is challenging as the restaurant strives to satisfy everyone's past experiences with German food.

"You have people that will go in there and say, 'Oh, if this doesn't taste like my mom's cooking, it's not good,'" he said.

Petz said Shirley German To Go will not see major changes for the time being.

With more restaurants on his plate, Petz remains optimistic, thanks to his several years of experience in the field.

"The restaurant industry is very risky. There are many ups and downs, and it doesn't matter who you are. It's always going to be like that," he said.

Petz also operates his own catering company, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/AGourmetKS/?locale=hi_IN">AGourmet</a>, which sprouted into Verdant Bistro.

Tiger Station returns in downtown Hays to serve burgers

Unless there is a protest petition campaign, the transient guest tax at Hays hotels and Airbnbs will increase to 8.25% on April 1.

The current guest tax rate is 7%, established in 1998. Five percent of that is allocated to Convention and Visitors Bureau operations. Another 2% was added in 2018 for North Vine Street improvements.

"To go on a 5% operating budget for 25 years is quite impressive, but the CVB fund is becoming unsustainable," said Collin Bielser, deputy city manager.&nbsp;

"Technology has changed, costs have increased, so they're doing a lot of things differently."

Increasing the guest tax by 1.25% will generate about $250,000 more each year.

The Special Parks will receive $50,000 to maintain the city’s parks and recreational facilities.

"Those are amenities that both residents and visitors utilize alike," Bielser said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We have to find reasons to make visitors come here," Commissioner Shaun Musil said.

The city's general fund is primarily financed by the local sales tax.

"We want visitors to come enjoy the quality-of-life amenities we've invested in," Commissioner Reese Barrick said.&nbsp;

Only two cities in Kansas have a higher guest tax than Hays will soon have. Overland Park and Mission are at 9%. Many cities are at 8%, including Dodge City, Emporia, and Shawnee.

In other business, city commissioners approved three items that continue moving forward The Grove, a retiree-focused&nbsp;housing project north of Hays Medical Center. 

Those included a low bid award of $3 million to Sporer Land Development, Oakley/Colby, for construction of street, water, storm water, sanitary sewer and other infrastructure improvements.

Commissioners signed a $100,438 construction engineering services agreement with Driggs Design Group, Hays, and approved the development agreement with Grow Hays.

Dirt work has begun on a portion of the project, including a new senior/child care/community center. There will also be an extension of the city's multi-use path from 22nd Street and the existing HaysMed path to the north of the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.

Also approved was a renewal agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas for a triple-option employee health insurance plan. The premium will increase by almost 13% in 2025.

"That's still well below the national average," Giebler said.

The city will continue providing up to $625 in employer match for employees’ health savings accounts.

Giebler, the commissioners and Toby Dougherty, city manager, recognized employees who have a combined 315 years of service to the city.

Shattercane (Sorghum bicolor), sometimes called wild cane or black amber, is the same species as our domesticated sorghums. Some authorities give it the subspecies name drummondii to distinguish it from our cultivated varieties, though the taxonomy of this genus is often debated. What is certain, though, is that shattercane easily cross-pollinates with cultivated sorghums via insects and wind-dispersed pollen and also cross-pollinates with its weedy relative johnsongrass (Sorghum halapense).

Ecology - A native of Africa, this species is now widespread in areas of the world where domesticated grain or forage sorghums are grown. It is possible that sorghum arrived in the U.S. as early as the 1600s, but reliable records indicate that several documented introductions occurred in the early 1800s. Shattercane can be utilized by livestock as a forage, but it can accumulate toxic nitrates and prussic acid under certain conditions. Undigested seeds can be spread in manure applied to fields. Shattercane seeds can also be buoyant, allowing for dispersal in moving water. Birds and small mammals utilize its seeds. Shattercane is a host species for disease and insect pests of sorghum and corn. Yield losses from shattercane interference can be as high as 70% in corn and greater than 95% in soybeans.

Identification- shattercane is a warm-season plant growing up to 12 feet tall. The plant is quite variable in growth habits and tolerant of both heat and drought. The stems are unbranched, but the plant tillers at the base to form clumps. The leaves are generally smooth and display a prominent midrib. They can be up to 20 inches long and 2 inches wide. It has a short membranous ligule with a fringe of hairs at the top. The inflorescence is typically a loose panicle with several pendulous (drooping) racemes (branches). Seeds are dark brown and typically covered with deep purple to black chaff. The panicles, which can number from one to six per plant, produce between 500 and 1500 seeds each. A special layer of abscission cells at the base of the seeds allows them to easily dislodge (shatter) at maturity, giving the plant its common name. Management -to see the detailed herbicide management practices for shattercane control in soybean, sunflower, corn, grain and forage sorghum. To prevent the spread of shattercane seeds by harvesting infested fields last (where possible), thoroughly cleaning harvest equipment before moving to a new field, and controlling shattercane in ditches and roadways. Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason’s tour of Kansas begins on October 25 in Dodge City. During the four days of the tour, she will make 21 stops and cover more than 1,000 miles, meet with journalists in small Kansas community public and commercial radio stations, participate in two live TV programs, and sit down for an extensive podcast interview. This year’s tour will focus on the impact of the people, programs, and partnerships of FHSU on our state.&nbsp;

On this year’s tour, Mason will be joined at several tour stops by the presidents of FHSU’s Strategic Affiliation partner universities, President Eric Burks of Fort Hays Tech | North Central, and President Ben Schears of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest. The trio will participate in panel discussions in Goodland and Beloit to share updates on the ongoing work of the Affiliation Implementation Teams charged with creating new academic pathways, integrating student services, and creating the business and community partnerships that best serve the workforce development needs of rural Kansas. The three presidents will also participate in TV and radio interviews in Wichita on October 30.

October 25: Dodge City, Garden City, and Goodland

Tour stops on day one will focus on addressing domestic violence and sex trafficking in rural Kansas. In addition, a panel discussion will be hosted by Fort Hays Tech | Northwest on our collaborative effort to enhance educational opportunities and services in rural Kansas. The construction and engineering design Affiliation Implementation Team is working to address regional workforce needs, expand student opportunities, and create innovative educational pathways between our three affiliation partner institutions.

October 28: Russell, Beloit, and Salina

Tour stops on day two will include two radio interviews and a panel discussion on how FHSU and Fort Hays Tech | North Central are working to address the shortage of nursing and healthcare services professionals in rural Kanas.&nbsp;

President Mason will first visit the Topeka Correctional Institute for a radio interview about FHSU’s adult literacy outreach partnership that is helping incarcerated women connect with their children, grandchildren, and other family members. She will then meet with reporters to discuss the Docking Institute for Public Policy’s 2024 Kansas Speaks public opinion survey. Day three will conclude with a podcast interview and TV appearance that will focus on the progress of the Strategic Affiliation Initiative since it was launched in July of this year.

October 30: Wichita and Great Bend

Presidents Burks and Schears will join President Mason for a live TV interview and then participate in a radio interview. The three will share information on the progress of the Strategic Affiliation Initiative. The tour will conclude with two media interviews in Great Bend. The first will focus on the partnership between the university and the Kansas Bankers Association and the joint effort to recruit students interested in a career in banking and finance to come to FHSU and take advantage of the programs and professional networking offerings of the W. R. Robbins Banking Institute.&nbsp; The tour's final stop will be a news interview about the efforts of the FHSU Online Student Government to improve the online student experience for those who chose FHSU Online for its unmatched affordability, flexibility, and overall value.

🎙 Mason to kick off 2024 FHSU President’s Kansas Media Tour on Friday

PHILLIPS COUNTY —A man is in custody after allegedly firing a gun near the middle school in Phillipsburg.

Just before 8a.m. Thursday, the Phillips County Sheriff's Office received a call that there was an individual shooting a gun south of the middle school in Phillipsburg, according to a social media report from the sheriff.

A deputy who was patrolling school zones in Phillipsburg arrived shortly.  The Deputy began shouting orders and then the individual dropped both weapons and laid them on the ground.  The suspect,&nbsp;identified as 26-year-old Morgan William Thieben, who lives in the 500 block of 7th street in an apartment. 

 From eyewitness statements it has been concluded that he fired two shots into the air with a 9mm Pistol, but also had an AR Rifle on his person as well, according to the sheriff's office.

Thieben was then taken into custody on requested charges of Criminal Threat, Aggravated Assault and Unlawful Discharge of a firearm within city limits.

He had one full magazine for the pistol and the rifle magazine and chamber were empty.  A search warrant was done on the suspect’s apartment.  During the search only a single 9mm round was found in the apartment.  There was no evidence leading to a motive or agenda. 

Thieben is currently incarcerated in the Phillips County Jail where he is being mentally screened.  There were multiple people in the area who helped get the kids to safety at the nearby school and others who attempted to control the situation.

  Sheriff Kyle Pinkerton said, “We should all be proud of how our community reacted, it was quick, and everyone prioritized the safety of our children, and also to the Deputies that responded and ran directly to the threat and ended it."

The Hays Arts Center has three exhibits opening on Friday, featuring five artists, representing five different artistic media.

"We have got three very unique and very different exhibitions for our fall features," Brenda Meder, Hays Arts Council director, said.

The first exhibit, "Bits and Pieces," which will be in the main gallery, will feature Shannon Trevethan and Tracy Hanzlick, both of Russell.&nbsp;

"Shannon loves assemblage work and putting things together," Meder said. "She is also a fabulous painter. That's not what is included in this exhibition, but you can see elements of that incorporated into her assemblages."

"Everybody likes getting a close look and seeing what they're made of," she said. "She's always upcycling, repurposing and finding things. It is wonderful to see what her imagination allows her to put together."

Hanzlick rolls pieces from magazines or brochures to produce the color in her collages. Some are more abstract, but she also has a piece that depicts two feathers.

The exhibit will also feature some of her paintings.

"There are some similarities in color, so I've tried to put things together so that the moods and feelings of these two artists' work come together," Meder said.

"Painting with Sun" watercolors by Margie Hammerschmidt will be displayed in the center's hallway.

Hammerschmidt, of Hays, is a retired nurse and began painting in earnest later in life.

"Life, career and family, although she was always a creative person, kept her from really immersing herself in [painting]. Margie has not been a watercolor painter until the last four to four and half years," Meder said.

"I have just watched her work grow amazingly."

"Sunset Duets" by George Jerkovich of Salina and Debbie Wagner of Bennington will be in the Founder's Gallery.

Each piece of artwork coordinates with a sunset on a set day, although the pieces may portray a different location.

Wagner's media is pastels. Jerkovich is a photographer.

The images are titled with the dates of the sunset depicted.

"Debbie, following on the heels of some very traumatic brain surgery and some brain tumors, decided in gratitude that she wanted to look at the world in a new way," Meder said.&nbsp;

Since 2005, she has painted the sunrise each morning.

Jerkovich, who was not an early riser, proposed the sunset collaboration from late 2012 through 2013.

"It's really wonderful to see that artistic creation from two different perspectives but on the same night very near those same bewitching hours of dusk and sunset," Meder said.

The exhibits' opening reception will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Hays Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 26.

"With diverse as the art that is in here right now," Meder said, "everybody will gravitate toward one of the forms or another and be completely drawn to it."

Hays Arts Center offers trio of diverse exhibits for fall show

The Center for Life Experience (CFLE), which has provided grief support services to Hays and the surrounding area for 24 years, is closing its office in Hays.

However, even though the office at 103C E. 27th St. is closing effective Oct. 28, the nonprofit organization itself will remain open until after the first of the year.

The nonprofit 501(3)c Center has been one of the few such organizations in Northwest Kansas to offer grief support programs for both children and adults. Some of those programs will continue, said Linn Ann Huntington, who serves on the Center’s Board of Directors.

“The center is closing because of an alarming drop in individual contributions over the last year,” Huntington said. “The board pursued other operational models to try to keep the organization afloat, but, unfortunately, we were not successful.”

One of the services that will continue is the center’s grief support group. 

“Two of our support groups have decided to merge,” Huntington said, “and that combined group will continue to meet, just in a new location.”

The group will begin meeting at its new location, the Hays Senior Center, 2450 E. Eighth St., beginning on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It will continue to meet there the third Thursday of every month.

The group welcomes any adult who has lost a child of any age, including miscarriages and stillbirths. While many members are parents, the group also welcomes grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, etc.

The group also welcomes any adult who has lost another adult in their life, such as a spouse, parent, sibling, friend, etc.

“Dr. Kate McGonigal, who holds a Ph.D. in sociology, has agreed to continue as the facilitator for this group on a volunteer basis, and we are very grateful to her for that,” Huntington said.

McGonigal teaches in the Sociology Department at Fort Hays State University. Among the classes that she teaches is Death &amp; Dying.

Another traditional event coming up is the “Healing Hearts Memorial Tree Dedication,” which will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Hays Public Library.

“At this event, grief support group members place ornaments on a special Christmas tree remembering children they have lost. Each child’s name is read aloud, and it is very poignant to see the ornaments honoring each child,” Huntington said.

The public is welcome to attend this event. Individuals may simply watch, or they may bring their own special ornaments to remember a child they have lost. The group will provide a free ornament to anyone who wants one, she said.

CFLE will continue to operate until after the first of the year because it is still in the process of paying off some debts, Huntington said.

“We are expecting some pledged funds toward the end of this calendar year and the first of 2025, so CFLE will continue to operate until then,” she said. “We will have some last-minute legal things to do, such as filing our 2024 tax return before we can officially dissolve.”

She added, “The board would like to thank all of the CFLE donors, volunteers, group members, paid staff, group facilitators, and other board members over the years,” Huntington said, “especially our current Executive Director Laura Allen.” Her last day with CFLE will also be Oct. 28.

“The board has been blessed to work with some wonderful individuals who care very deeply about the center’s mission, helping people navigate their own journeys through grief.

“Losing a loved one is something we all experience in our lives. Grief is not something we ever get ‘over.’ It is a journey that we get through,” Huntington said. “I speak on behalf of the board when I say it is our hope that those wanting the comfort that a grief support group can provide will seek out the one that is continuing to meet.”

Some of those programs will continue, said Linn Ann Huntington, who serves on the Center’s Board of Directors.“The center is closing because of an alarming drop in individual contributions over the last year,” Huntington said. “The board pursued other operational models to try to keep the organization afloat, but, unfortunately, we were not successful.”One of the services that will continue is the center’s grief support group. “Two of our support groups have decided to merge,” Huntington said, “and that combined group will continue to meet, just in a new location.”The group will begin meeting at its new location, the Hays Senior Center, 2450 E. Eighth St., beginning on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It will continue to meet there the third Thursday of every month.The group welcomes any adult who has lost a child of any age, including miscarriages and stillbirths. While many members are parents, the group also welcomes grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, etc.The group also welcomes any adult who has lost another adult in their life, such as a spouse, parent, sibling, friend, etc.“Dr. Kate McGonigal, who holds a Ph.D. in sociology, has agreed to continue as the facilitator for this group on a volunteer basis, and we are very grateful to her for that,” Huntington said.McGonigal teaches in the Sociology Department at Fort Hays State University. Among the classes that she teaches is Death &amp; Dying.Another traditional event coming up is the “Healing Hearts Memorial Tree Dedication,” which will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Hays Public Library.“At this event, grief support group members place ornaments on a special Christmas tree remembering children they have lost. Each child’s name is read aloud, and it is very poignant to see the ornaments honoring each child,” Huntington said.The public is welcome to attend this event. Individuals may simply watch, or they may bring their own special ornaments to remember a child they have lost. The group will provide a free ornament to anyone who wants one, she said.CFLE will continue to operate until after the first of the year because it is still in the process of paying off some debts, Huntington said.“We are expecting some pledged funds toward the end of this calendar year and the first of 2025, so CFLE will continue to operate until then,” she said. “We will have some last-minute legal things to do, such as filing our 2024 tax return before we can officially dissolve.”She added, “The board would like to thank all of the CFLE donors, volunteers, group members, paid staff, group facilitators, and other board members over the years,” Huntington said, “especially our current Executive Director Laura Allen.” Her last day with CFLE will also be Oct. 28.“The board has been blessed to work with some wonderful individuals who care very deeply about the center’s mission, helping people navigate their own journeys through grief.“Losing a loved one is something we all experience in our lives. Grief is not something we ever get ‘over.’ It is a journey that we get through,” Huntington said. “I speak on behalf of the board when I say it is our hope that those wanting the comfort that a grief support group can provide will seek out the one that is continuing to meet.”
