The Ellis County Sheriff's Office warns of scammers in the Hays area who reach residents via calls, text messages and social media.

Lt. Tim Deines of the Ellis County Sheriff's Office said that scammers are posing as various identities, including law enforcement.

"We've had some of our local deputies and officers around here say that people have used their names fictitiously and said, 'Hey, I work for the Ellis County Sheriff's Office. This is my name. We've got a warrant,'" he said.

Deines said scammers impersonating authority figures try to persuade individuals to make payments or provide personal information to avoid arrest.

Scammers often direct potential victims to purchase gift cards and then call a number they provide. Victims are asked to share the gift card numbers, allowing scammers to redeem cash without the physical cards.

Deines advises people to be cautious and verify information independently by finding the agency's official number online and contacting them directly.

"I don't know any agency here or anywhere across the country that takes gift cards or anything like that instead of payment. So, of course, that would be a big red flag," he said.

Deines said scammers also target potential victims through text messages and social media, warning that scams can appear on almost any platform.

One example of a text scam Deines encountered is a fake delivery notice for a lost package, asking for personal information.

Although scammers look to extract personal information from their victims, Deines said much of this information is already accessible online.

"If you ever Google yourself or your address on the internet, you'd be surprised by what you could find. It's pretty easy for these people to go online and find basic information," he said.

Deines said holding scammers accountable is challenging because many operate outside the country, using local phone numbers to conceal themselves.

Ellis County Sheriff's Office warns of scam calls in Hays area

Recently, Fort Larned National Historic Site reduced the park’s deferred maintenance backlog using funding available to National Park Service units through the Great American Outdoor Act (GAOA) Legacy Restoration Fund.

These funds supported the replacement of aging roof surfaces, tuck pointing of historic stone masonry, window and door repairs, and the painting of wood features. This additional funding source also supported the completion of structural repairs to two porches. The historic structures whose preservation was made possible with these funds includes the Quarter Master, Commissary/Arsenal buildings and the Commanding Officers’ Quarters. Overall, thirteen thousand square feet of fire-retardant cedar shingles were replaced, thirty-three windows and twelve doors were repaired, and fifteen thousand square feet of wood surfaces were painted.

These preservation efforts were led by the GAOA funded Maintenance Action Team (MAT), comprised of skilled craftspeople from the National Park Service Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC). They were also supported by an enthusiastic youth crew from the Student Conservation Association (SCA). HPTC recruits, trains, and employs people in traditional historic restoration and preservation techniques and trades. Several geographically based MATs travel to national parks to train and work alongside park staff to complete small, but critical, maintenance rehabilitation and repair projects on historic structures.

“We are grateful for the expertise that the MAT team brought to Fort Larned. With their skill and the funding available from GAOA, Fort Larned’s historic structures are well preserved and continue to tell the fascinating story of this 1860s army post,” said acting Superintendent Cassie Branstetter.

MATs enable the National Park Service to complete projects that require knowledge and competency in traditional trades in a consistent and cost-effective manner. They also serve as a beacon for traditional trade skills, allowing younger generations to learn and appreciate the importance of preserving our architectural heritage.

Infrastructure funding from GAOA is part of a concerted effort to address the extensive deferred maintenance and repair backlog in national parks. Supported by revenue from energy development, GAOA's Legacy Restoration Fund provides up to $1.3 billion per year for five years to the National Park Service. These funds make significant enhancements in national parks,

ensure their preservation and provide opportunities for recreation, education, and enjoyment for current and future visitors.

Get ready for a spooktacular night: Crawl to End Alz 2024

At&nbsp;<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/live-updates/hurricane-helene/?id=113931821">over 230 deaths</a>, Helene is now America’s deadliest hurricane since Katrina ripped a hole in the Superdome in 2005. For inland areas supposedly immune from catastrophic storm surges, mountainous “climate havens” like&nbsp;<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/asheville-tragedy-shows-climate-change-safe-havens-experts/story?id=114362166">Asheville, North Carolina</a>&nbsp;were startled to bear the brunt of apocalyptic-like flooding.

On its heels, Hurricane Milton is expected to cause far more damage as it rams into Florida’s denser population centers.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sadly,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hurricane-helene-fema-826effecab238ff0acf0556ad64b0df2">federal assistance</a>&nbsp;is being politicized less than 30 days from a national election and shrouding a longer-term policy issue for those caught in the middle.&nbsp;Climate migration.&nbsp;As weather disasters continue to intensify,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/features/americans-moving-climate-change/">50 million</a>&nbsp;Americans will leave risky areas (abandonment areas) for less risky areas (climate havens) in the coming decades.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/features/americans-moving-climate-change/">30% of Americans cited climate change</a>&nbsp;as a motivator to move in 2024.

With Kansas facing a demographic vice due to historically low birth rates and low retention of younger Kansans, being on the wrong side of the climate migration equation will exacerbate fiscal health and quality of life concerns for many communities. The last time climate,&nbsp;<a href="https://fdcenterprises.com/how-soil-erosion-and-farming-practices-lead-to-the-dust-bowl/">public policy</a>, and despair collided here,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/surviving-the-dust-bowl-mass-exodus-plains/#:~:text=In%20the%20rural%20area%20outside,those%2C%20200%2C000%20moved%20to%20California.">2.5 million people migrated</a>&nbsp;from the Dust Bowl.&nbsp;So, it might be worth asking just how well positioned is Kansas, or your community, for this great climate re-shuffle?

For starters, we couldn’t be any more inland if we tried. A geographical refuge from rising seas, hurricane torrents, and wildfires; a free space on your climate haven bingo card.&nbsp;What about those Kansas winds? Few places are better positioned for renewable energy being the nation’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eia.gov/state/analysis.php?sid=KS#:~:text=The%20state%20ranked%20among%20the,highest%20amount%20among%20the%20states.">third largest share of wind-generated electricity</a>. Even&nbsp;<a href="https://www.accuweather.com/en/severe-weather/is-tornado-alley-shifting-east/1162839">Tornado Alley is shifting</a>. Tornado frequency and wickedness have found a new home in the Mississippi and Tennessee River valleys drawn like a magnet to the warming Gulf’s moist air. Ironically, southwest drought conditions help by sending dryer air over Kansas.

On the flip side, droughts currently cover almost half of Kansas (<a href="https://www.drought.gov/states/kansas">46.4%</a>) due to heat and water shortages.&nbsp;<a href="https://projects.propublica.org/climate-migration/">Farm crop yields are projected to decline</a>&nbsp;across the state in coming decades. Unlike some Great Lakes’ climate havens next to the world’s largest freshwater supply, farming practices and climatic changes have transformed our great underground lake (Ogallala Aquifer) into a trickle thus nudging western Kansas closer to climate abandonment.&nbsp;Nothing makes people move more than flooding. Since 2000,&nbsp;<a href="https://firststreet.org/research-library/climate-abandonment-areas">3.2 million people</a>&nbsp;have left climate abandonment areas due to high flood risk with another 7.5 million projected by 2053.&nbsp;However, flooding repercussions are acutely local.&nbsp;<a href="https://assets.riskfactor.com/media/National%20Risk%20Assessment%20Climate%20Abandon.pdf">Research</a>&nbsp;shows when 5-10% of properties in neighborhoods become flood risks, people start to move. This tipping point leads to climate abandonment. This same research shows one-third of Sedgwick County may classify as abandonment areas by 2053, one of the nation’s largest increases.&nbsp;The bottom line is state/ local governments have the ability and responsibility to help their citizenry adapt to climate change, avoid out-migration, and advance social equity.

Last year, Kansas lawmakers finally stopped kicking the can by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.enidnews.com/news/kansas-farmers-brace-for-water-cuts-to-save-ogallala-aquifer/article_573d6b1c-3ff9-11ef-97ff-8bf8acef01f4.html">enforcing conservation measures</a>&nbsp;and approving&nbsp;<a href="https://www.farmtalknews.com/news/kansas-makes-historic-investment-in-preserving-the-ogallala-aquifer/article_86a6a308-179c-11ef-9aa8-1fa01ea4d166.html#:~:text=Kansas%20makes%20historic%20investment%20in%20preserving%20the%20Ogallala%20Aquifer,-by%20Greg%20Doering&amp;text=An%20appropriation%20of%20%2435%20million,state's%20water%20resources%20in%20history.">unprecedented funding</a>&nbsp;as a&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/06/30/hoping-for-a-miracle-to-save-the-ogallala-aquifer-prepare-for-the-new-dust-bowl/">another Dust Bowl looms</a>.&nbsp;And even as some counties drag their feet, practices such as stormwater bio-retention areas, woodlands restoration, renewable energy ordinances (wind and solar), incentivizing infill development, adopting resilient building codes, expanded tree canopies, floodplain buy-out programs, etc. are already deployed in many parts of Kansas.&nbsp;Because as they already know, there’s really no such thing as a climate haven.

Armbruster was selected for his presence on the radio for Hays High athletic events and his excellence across the airwaves, which was recognized with his Hod Humiston award in 2024.

After a disaster make your donations count

The Hays City Commission voted on Thursday to fund a new police station and redevelopment of a Cerv's location. Hays and Russell are also suing Edwards County over the R9 project.

Hays City Manager Toby Dougherty said the lawsuit was filed against the Edwards County Commission, the Edwards County Planning Commission and several other parties due to illegal zoning practices.

Dougherty said that Edwards County's zoning regulations are an attempt to block the project southwest of Kinsley.

Hays City Commissioner Reese Barrick said Edwards County's efforts to restrict the R9 project are unjustified and do not negatively impact the area's agricultural production, public health or property values.

"This is a really malicious, spiteful act that's not legal. I'm glad we're taking steps to do something about it," Barrick said.

According to the lawsuit, in 1994, the former owners of the R9 Ranch signed an agreement to sell the ranch and its water rights to the city of Hays.

The city has proposed designing a new police station and municipal court facility, estimated to cost $8.9 million.

The city approved plans to issue $1.39 million of the project cost through temporary notes.

The city will renovate the former Astra Bank building, 1100 Fort St., in downtown Hays.

Cervs and the Russell J. Pfannenstiel Trust, the developer, submitted an application to replace the Vine Street Phillip's 66 store and gas station, 3701 W. 41st St., Hays, with a new facility.

The developer has requested a 1.5% community investment District (CID) sales tax to help fund the $4.7 million project. The tax will only apply within the district and not the entire city.

The developer plans to replace the existing store with a new convenience store and gas station, enhancing the gas station's layout and providing increased amenities.

In the proposed redevelopment, the facility will be built on the north side of the lot, with its entrance facing south. The existing building faces east. The gas pumps will be relocated to the south side of the lot.

The developer estimates the CID sales tax will generate $895,000 during the district's maximum term of 22 years.

City commissioner Shaun Musil said the Cerv's convenience stores in Hays are some of the cleanest businesses in town, and he looks forward to the new facility.

"This business is the doorstep of our community. I think it's going to add to the look and bring in more businesses," he said.

The 1.5% CID was approved and construction will begin in December.

The city will issue general obligation bonds to provide Heart of American Development Corporation with a $2,565,000 grant for the&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/bc26d31c-170f-4982-8534-088157e96e50">Tallgrass 2nd Addition</a>&nbsp;Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) project.

Nine bids for these bonds were received, with Country Club Bank offering the best bid.

The city also issued temporary notes to upgrade its public water system, with the best bid coming from Piper Sandler &amp; Co.

Hays, Russell sue Edwards County over R9 project

This week, the Ellis County Commission appointed five
community members to the newly formed Ellis County Library Board.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/41ba1a64-b3bb-41d6-912f-9accb9dab047">After voters overwhelmingly approved the creation of the county
library in the August primary election, the commission began accepting
applications from residents to serve on the board.</a>

To be eligible to serve on the board, individuals have to
live in the new taxing district, which covers rural Ellis County and Victoria
but not Hays or Ellis.



According to County Administrator Darin Myers, the county received
12 applications.

The commissioners then ranked the 12 applicants and listed
the top five individuals.

Teget and Rogowski were the top two voters getters and were appointed
to the longest terms through April 30, 2028.

Honas’ term will run through April 30, 2027. Dome’s term
expires April 30, 2026, and Hammerschmidt’s April 2025.

Each term on the board&nbsp;is four years after the initial
shorter terms, and according to County Counselor Bill Jeter, the statute says a
person can only serve two four-year terms before they have to wait a year before
returning to the board.

“Anybody that has less than a four-year appointment once
that expires could run for two more or be appointed for two more consecutive
four years,” Jeter said. 

The Ellis County Commission chairperson will serve as a member of the board.

County Commissioner Michael Berges said he appreciated
everyone who applied for the positions.

"The nice thing about the applications is how much many of
those people do on other boards," Berges said. "So, seeing the community
involvement (is) certainly something I took into consideration on all the
applications."

The board will create its by-laws and regulations.

“They make their own separate decisions on what course they
want to see this library go, based on the funding the commission provides,” Jeter
said. “You don’t have the right to approve or disprove what they do or what
direction they want to go.”

Commissioner Neal Younger said he likes&nbsp;the fact&nbsp;that
the five people come from all over the county.

“I believe all three commissioners chose these people
(because) there’s some backgrounding (with) a lot of those individuals,” Commissioner
Neal Younger said. “So, I think they’ll do fine without any guidance from us.”

Property taxes currently collected from residents living in those areas for library services fund the Central Kansas Library System (CKLS).

According to the CKLS, Ellis County collected more than $292,000 in taxes in 2023. The funding was then distributed to member libraries across the 17-county area that the CKLS serves.

The funding the Hays and Ellis public libraries and the three public school libraries receive from the CKLS has continued to decline in recent years, and according to County Administrator Darin Myers, by 2027, less than 25% of the taxes paid from Ellis County will be returned to Ellis County.

The library taxes collected in the newly formed taxing
district will support the county library. 

The State Library Board can still block the implementation
of the&nbsp;county library if they believe it will do “manifest harm” to the
Central Kansas Library. Still, Myers said an updated set of regulations had
been sent to the attorney general’s office that would trim the waiting
period&nbsp;from the current two years.

The Ellis County Farm Bureau hosted a successful Kids Ag Day on the Farm at Pa’s Pumpkin Patch. Over 350 Ellis County 4th grade students attended the day-long event, which featured a variety of agricultural related activities and presentations. 

Dairy Presentation, where students learned about the dairy industry and met a Jersey dairy cow named 'Tempe,' presented by Kerri Hamilton with Southwest Dairy. 

ATV Safety presented by KSU Extension provided valuable safety tips and demonstrations for ATV riders. 

“Wow That Cow” Calving Education by Dr. AJ Tarpoff from KSU led an informative presentation on the calving process.

The event was a collaborative effort, with the Hays FFA Chapter, Victoria FFA Chapter, and TMP FFA Chapter serving as group leaders and presenting to students. 

Their dedication and enthusiasm were instrumental in making Kids Ag Day a memorable experience for all involved.

"We are thrilled with the success of Kids Ag Day," said Steph Eckroat, County Service Coordinator at Ellis County Farm Bureau. "It was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about agriculture and the importance of our local farmers and ranchers." 

The Ellis County Farm Bureau Board would like to thank all of the volunteers, presenters, and sponsors who made Kids Ag Day possible. We look forward to continuing to provide educational opportunities for students in our community.

Kids Ag Day 'a huge success' at Pa's Pumpkin Patch

Corn stunt spiroplasma and its associated vector (corn leafhopper, Dalbulus maidis) have been recently confirmed in Kansas. Corn stunt spiroplasma has been confirmed in 26 counties. Recent scouting efforts across Kansas confirm active leaf hoppers in many additional counties. Although the majority of the positive reports are from field corn, K-State Plant Pathologist Rodrigo Onofre says we also confirmed corn stunt spiroplasma in sweet corn as well. High levels of disease were found in late-planted and double-cropped corn, leading to potential yield reduction, says Onofre. Symptoms of the disease may include shortened internodes, which can result in a stunted stature of the corn plant as well as leaves with red discoloration. Because other biotic and abiotic factors can cause red or purple discoloration in corn, laboratory testing is important to diagnose corn stunt disease and distinguish it from other stressors.

In the past, corn stunt disease has been limited in distribution to southern Texas, Florida, and California. Corn stunt is caused by a wall-less bacterial pathogen called corn stunt spiroplasma. The corn leafhopper can also transmit additional pathogens, either singly or in combination with the corn stunt spiroplasma. To date, only corn stunt spiroplasma has been detected in Kansas, says Onofre. Additional research is needed to determine the presence of other pathogens vectored by corn leafhopper in Kansas.

This disease is spread only by the corn leafhopper, which was also just confirmed in Kansas. Corn leafhopper acquires pathogens within minutes of feeding on infected corn plants but it can take up to 30 days for the leafhopper to be able to infect healthy corn plants during feeding events. The corn leafhopper is relatively simple to identify under magnification. These leafhoppers are light tan to yellowish-white in color and approximately 1/8” long. Two distinct dark spots between the antennae and eyes are very characteristic of this species. Nymphs lack wings and can vary in color. Like most leafhoppers, all stages move quickly when disturbed and hide in shaded areas of corn plants. Disease testing – Help us track the disease

If you suspect a field has corn stunt, submit a sample to the K-State Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab. The best type of sample for corn stunt testing is living symptomatic leaf tissue. Dry/senesced corn leaves are not recommended and may lead to inconclusive results. Entire

plants are not required to test for this disease, only symptomatic leaves, as only the midrib will be used in testing.

Collection and shipping instructions can be found below:

· Collect and ship samples on or before Wednesday to avoid weekend storage

· Collect symptomatic living leaves (ideally from multiple symptomatic plants)

· Label and use plastic bags; Do not use paper bags, and do not add water. · Fill out submission form, search on-line for KSU Plant Pathology lab. Include variety/hybrid info

The corn leafhopper is relatively simple to identify under magnification. These leafhoppers are light tan to yellowish-white in color and approximately 1/8” long. Two distinct dark spots between the antennae and eyes are very characteristic of this species. Nymphs lack wings and can vary in color. Like most leafhoppers, all stages move quickly when disturbed and hide in shaded areas of corn plants. The 2024 Annual Fall Cleanup will consist of one and only one sweep through the City beginning October 21st. No set schedule has been established; however, residential curbside services will be first with residential regular alley services following.&nbsp;If you put your trash on the Curb, put your Fall Cleanup items on the Curb. &nbsp; If you put your trash in the Alley, put your Fall Cleanup&nbsp;items in the Alley. The city-wide general schedule for alley services will start after curbside collections are completed. The number of employees committed to the task may vary from day to day; therefore, crews are unable to predict when they will be by a residence. City crews have a 20-minute time limit per residence for regular collections and 10 minutes for tree collections. Any items remaining after 20 minutes of pickup will be the responsibility of the property owner.

As in years past, the City WILL NOT pick up tires and hazardous waste. Tires should be disposed of at the Ellis County Landfill, and hazardous waste items should be disposed of at the Ellis County Hazardous Waste Facility. Please call 628-9460 or 628-9449 for detailed information.

The Annual Fall Cleanup Program, set to begin October 21st, is an opportunity for residents to discard items that would not be picked up in normal trash collection.

Waste should be placed in four separate piles in preparation of the Fall Cleanup. The piles should be organized in the following manner:

1. Tree limbs and brush - Small Quantities Only! (no longer than 12 feet in length or 6 inches in diameter); bamboo bundled in 4’ lengths; all yard and garden waste MUST be bagged

2. Construction and Demolition Debris, i.e., lumber, drywall, bricks, sinks, wires, etc. (please pull or bend over nails and place small quantities of concrete, bricks, and plaster in containers)

3. White Goods/Metals, i.e., guttering, siding, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, metal swing sets, propane tanks for grills, lawn mowers, etc.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; *Refrigerators and freezers must be empty of all items in order for them to be picked up.

4. Municipal Waste (all other items), i.e., furniture, carpet, tv’s, computers, etc.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; *Exceptionally large items, such as hot tubs and swing sets, should be cut down into more manageable pieces in order for them to be picked up.

**TO AVOID WRONGFUL PICK UP, “TREASURED ITEMS” SHOULD BE TAGGED OR REMOVED FROM THE COLLECTION AREA**

Annual Fall Cleanup set for Oct. 21

TOPEKA — Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson has announced Kansas literacy rates continue to improve with fewer students scoring in Level 1 on the spring 2024 reading state assessments, marking a second straight year that number has decreased. &nbsp;

“This is good news as one of the state board of education’s goals is to move more Kansas students out of the lowest level of reading,” Watson said. “While the decrease in Level 1 reading results is slight, this is the second year in a row that measure has improved, which tells us we’re on the right track. We expect these results will continue to improve as more teachers transition to structured literacy.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas State Board of Education invested $15 million in early literacy three years ago and committed an additional $10 million in 2024 to fund structured literacy training for Kansas teachers. Additionally, the board earlier this year approved a new licensure requirement for identified groups of educators requiring training in structured literacy or passing an exam measuring knowledge of structured literacy, beginning in 2028. &nbsp;

Structured literacy uses evidence-based science of reading principles that can be taught to all students, including those with dyslexia.&nbsp;

Watson’s announcement of the spring 2024 reading and math state assessment results coincided with his presentation of the Kansas State Department of Education’s 2023-24 annual report during this week’s Kansas State Board of Education’s monthly meeting.&nbsp; The Kansas assessment student performances are scored using four levels:&nbsp;

Students in the third through eighth grades and 10th&nbsp;grade take the reading and math state assessments annually each spring. &nbsp;

The 2024 ELA assessment results show that 33.6% of all students assessed scored at Levels 3 and 4, an increase from 33.2% in 2023 and 32.1% in 2022.&nbsp;

The 2024 ELA results show a decrease in the number of students scoring at Level 1 to 32.8%. That’s down from 32.9% in 2023 and 33.9% in 2022. &nbsp;

The 2024 math assessment results show 31.6% of all students scored at Levels 3 and 4, an increase from 31.3% in 2023 and 29.4% in 2022. &nbsp;

The 2024 math assessment results also show 33.2% of students scored at Level 1, a slight increase from 33.1% in 2023 but down from 34.2% in 2022.&nbsp;

The State Board’s goal to move more students out of Level 1 in reading, along with the initiative to increase the number of Kansas educators trained in Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling, or LETRS®, is gaining momentum.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As of Oct. 2024, an estimated 3,242 educators (including early childhood and administrators) had completed LETRS®&nbsp;training and have post-test scores. Another 12,141 educators (including early childhood and administrators) are in the process of getting trained in LETRS®. The LETRS®&nbsp;training is free for all Kansas educators as a result of federal ESSER funds. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Chronic absenteeism rates saw a three-year decline, going from 24.5% in 2022; 21.8% in 2023; and 19.7% in 2024. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the total number of days enrolled during the school year. It includes both excused, unexcused, out-of-school suspensions and in-school suspensions that last more than one-half of the school day.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As a lag indicator, the 2023 graduation rate declined by 1.2 percentage points to 88.1%, including a 1.3 percentage point decrease for students with disabilities. However, the graduation rate for English language learners (ELL) increased by 1 percentage point. (Graduation rates for 2024 won’t be available until later this year.)&nbsp;

While the graduation rate decreased slightly, the number of Kansas high school students participating in postsecondary courses has increased every year since 2021. The number of students concurrently enrolled, dual enrolled and those enrolled in the Excel in CTE courses at the college level in 2024 was 38,002, up from 35,785 in 2023; 33,519 in 2022; and 32,603 in 2021. The number of credit hours these students earned also increased over the same four-year period – 332,615 in 2024; 306,904 in 2023; 289,456 in 2022 and 285,402 in 2021. &nbsp;

(Graduation rates for 2024 won’t be available until later this year.)&nbsp;While the graduation rate decreased slightly, the number of Kansas high school students participating in postsecondary courses has increased every year since 2021. The number of students concurrently enrolled, dual enrolled and those enrolled in the Excel in CTE courses at the college level in 2024 was 38,002, up from 35,785 in 2023; 33,519 in 2022; and 32,603 in 2021. The number of credit hours these students earned also increased over the same four-year period – 332,615 in 2024; 306,904 in 2023; 289,456 in 2022 and 285,402 in 2021. &nbsp;

Offering family fun and pumpkin picking for the season, Pa's Pumpkin Patch in Hays is open for the rest of October.&nbsp;

We want to serve our community and have something affordable where you can go out and have fun as a family," Brett said.<figure>

 </figure>The pumpkin patch is open&nbsp;from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays and&nbsp;from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays.Weekend admission is $7 per person, while family nights, Tuesdays, is $15 per family.The pumpkin patch operates for five weekends each season, beginning on the last Saturday of September and continuing through Halloween.Activities at the patch include hayrack rides, a corn maze, train rides, an RC track course, interactions with alpacas and goats, and photo booths.<figure>

 </figure>"We've got several different photo booths set up. We know moms like getting family pictures," Brett said.The pumpkin patch also features a fire pit for making s'mores and other concessions.Brett said Copper is the "Pa" behind Pa's Pumpkin Patch, as he and his grandkids take charge of planting and caring for the pumpkins.Brett said this year's growing season was a great success, with their largest pumpkin weighing 108 pounds.<figure>

 </figure>"This is the best pumpkin season we've ever had with the amount of pumpkins and size. They are big and healthy," he said. "We didn't do anything different. We were blessed this year."Large pumpkins are 50 cents per pound, and smaller pumpkins and gourds are also available.Pa's Pumpkin Patch hosts field trips throughout the fall for schools, including special needs students. These trips allow students to explore and learn about agriculture.Brett said Pa's Pumpkin Patch supports agritourism by offering local, affordable pumpkins paired with outdoor fun."We want to bring joy to families through our agriculture by spending time outside, growing pumpkins and learning about pumpkins," Brett said.You can follow Pa's Pumpkin Patch on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100067533002537">Facebook</a>.<figure>
