Westbound I-70 now closed at Colby

Colby Community College is pleased to announce a reception in honor of the 2024 CCC Hall of Fame inductees. The celebration will take place at the Colby Event Center on Saturday, Dec. 7, starting around 5:45 p.m., following the men’s basketball game.

This year's honorees include All-American softball standout Lynnette Bohannon, celebrated basketball player Curtis Gates, former Trustee Kenton Krehbiel and his wife and longtime supporter Sheila, and former administrator and coach Dr. Gary Schultz.

As of 8 a.m. Friday, 0.48 of an inch had been measured at the K-State Agricultural Research Center south of town, as light rain continued to fall.

That brings the total rainfall so far this month to 1.26 inches. That exceeds the cumulative average for November of&nbsp;0.84 inches.

The <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/3168f6a2-ee5c-4cbf-aeec-c3f8883ed24a">three-day weather forecast</a> calls for cooler temperatures Friday with a slight chance of more rain on Saturday.&nbsp;

Rainy Friday in Hays

On Thursday, the Hays Senior Center, 2450 E. Eighth, hosted one of several local events thanking and honoring veterans for their military service.

The program started at 1 p.m., allowing attendance by veterans who had earlier participated in the Hays Kiwanis military appreciation lunch next door at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall.&nbsp;

The Rose Garden provided the dessert cake served at the conclusion of the senior center program.

Emcee Guy Windholz, Senior Center board member and former Ellis County commissioner, welcomed the special guests, including World War II veterans Don Bickle, U.S. Navy, and Bob Pfeifer, U.S. Army, of Hays. Both men are 97 years old.

Honored posthumously was Hays army veteran Harold Plymell, who was stationed in Japan during World War II. He passed away Oct. 17 at the age of 98.

Alex Freidenberger, who served in World War II as an army tech sergeant, was also attending. From Bison, he's the oldest living veteran in Rush County and celebrated his 100th birthday on Aug. 12.

Freidenberger shared what he has in common with another World War II veteran, former President Jimmy Carter, a naval veteran.

"We're both 100 old this year. We both voted by mail,&nbsp; and we both taught Sunday school in church. How about that?" Freidenberger said.

A patriotic musical tribute was sung by the Victoria group Trilogy, comprised of Jerry Schmidtberger, Rick Rupp and Leroy Schmidtberger.

The event was made possible by a community fund grant from Midwest Energy.

The annual Ellis County Veterans Day program will be Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Hays VFW Post 9076, 2106 Vine. A free-will donation lunch will follow the program. Everyone is invited.&nbsp;

Local veterans honored at Hays Senior Center program

Voters in the sprawling North Central Kansas 110th
House District have again elected Agra Republican Ken Rahjes to represent them
in Topeka.

According to the unofficial election results from the Kansas
Secretary of State’s office, Rahjes won all five counties that comprise the 110th
district, amassing 9,215 votes compared to 1,606 for Democrat Ellace Henderson.

He said it’s an honor that voters in the district had the “confidence”
to send him back to Topeka.

"Sometimes, one should not take that for granted. I don't
believe I did," Rhajes said. "Every day we were out working it like we do every
day, whether we're up for election or not, and so it means a
lot."

Rahjes said he believes the overwhelming support he
received, winning handily in all five counties, sends a strong message.

“They want us to keep doing what we're doing, and that is
fight for the rights and the freedoms that we have, and what we've been doing
the last several years has met favorably with those in the 110th district,” Rhajes
said. 

He said he is proud of his work on higher education and
supporting agriculture in the state during his nine years in the legislature.

Water conservation is also an important topic Rahjes says will
be a focus of the next legislative session.

“How we make sure that we have good quality and quantity of
water, not&nbsp;only for irrigators but industrial users and municipalities and
to have those relationships with those stakeholders is so important,” Rhajes
said.

Ag issues will continue to be a significant focal point for
Rahjes.

"We've been trying to make sure that agriculture interests
stay front and center in an agriculture state," Rahjes said. "And people say, 'Well,
that makes sense.' Well, you know, we become more urbanized all the time as a
state."

He said he is disappointed in their work on tax relief, and
he believes that will be a focal point this year.

"We can make good, strong investments and also give some of
that money the federal government gave us during COVID that we've been holding
on back in the form of tax relief," Rahjes said. "I think that's what you're
going to see because of the national outlook and then Trump tax cuts up for
renewal this coming year, now, with him being in the White House and at least
one, if not both, houses of Congress in D.C., going Republican, you'll see a big
push that, I think that will spill over into the state."

Rahjes also said he believes there will be a learning process
in the first year of the new legislature because of the new faces in Congress.

"Everybody on Election Day is kind of at an all-time high
point. The adrenaline is going, and now we got to govern," Rahjes said. "It's
great to win an election, but now this is the heavy lift. This is the
governing. This is to put those thoughts and those ideas and push them forward
to do no harm to our Kansas citizens and do what's right."

These facilities are the only public restrooms available in this community and are utilized during various community events throughout the year, such the annual Tour Die Kapellen bike tour, sponsored by the Hays Area Bicyclists and the many bus tours that visit this small community as well as events that are held at Holy Cross Church.

We wish to express our gratitude to Midwest Energy for their generous support on this project and of our community.

Midwest Energy awards grant to Holy Cross Charities

On November 8th of each year, college campuses nationwide celebrate the resilience and determination of first-generation college students. The First-Generation College Celebration marks the anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act, which has helped millions of first-generation students fulfill their dream of earning a college education. Many first-generation students are trailblazers in their families, and one key characteristic of this group of students is the persistence they bring to overcoming challenges, creating their own pathways to knowledge, and seizing control of their destiny.

This year, at Fort Hays State University (FHSU), on November 7th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., we hosted a come-and-go event to celebrate our first-generation students, faculty, and staff. Those who stopped received a complimentary FHSU First Gen t-shirt. In addition to snacks, activities included a photo booth, first-gen trivia, and first-gen word search.

Key first-gen recruitment and retention strategies at FHSU center on critical investments, including the Access to Academic Opportunity Grant (AAOG) and the First-to-Finish Living and Learning Community. The AAOG grant aims to navigate the financial barriers that many of these students face. However, the grant is not only about funding; it also emphasizes mentorship. The idea is to create a robust support system where seasoned upper-level students and alumni guide newcomers, sharing insights that could ease their transition to higher education. Stories from last year indicate a rising tide of peer support networks that continue to form within FHSU and the growing sense of community among first-generation students.

First-to-Finish Living and Learning Community (LLC) students live together in Victor E. Village and take classes together. Fall semester classes include a student success class and a leadership class titled Discovering Leadership. The LLC focuses on helping the students grow in their leadership capacity by focusing on the CORE (confidence, optimism, resilience, and engagement) leadership model. The class helps students learn about the knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with their leadership development.

“It has been amazing to watch these students flourish at FHSU. From the welcome weekend until now, you can tell they have the confidence to ask for help when needed, find their stride, and grow in the FHSU pride. I believe this success is due to many faculty and staff at the university supporting these students and helping them find the resources they need to be successful,” shared Jaden Rahe, director of student engagement.

Ashton Dawley is an excellent example of how our first-generation students are making the most of their college experience. He has taken advantage of opportunities in the ceramics department, enabling him to work with renowned artists and practice ceramic techniques that are highly complex. Ashton is exceptionally talented. Given his experience at FHSU thus far, Ashton has decided to become a college professor. He is focused on being the first in his family to earn a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s and doctorate.

Our student affairs professionals are committed to driving institutional transformation by enhancing academic and co-curricular opportunities for first-generation students. Our team

participates in several state and national events dedicated to advancing the first-generation college student experience.

In the spring, First-to-Finish and first-generation FHSU students get to attend the annual Ad Astra First Generation Conference on a Kansas college campus. This conference brings first-generation students from universities and high schools across Kansas together for a shared experience with the desired outcome of improved persistence to graduation and a better-prepared Kansas workforce.

Another cornerstone element of FHSU’s first-generation college student initiative involves collaborating with NASPA’s FirstGen Forward program. This is a nationwide network dedicated to championing first-generation students. The FirstGen Forward Network features best practices and insights that can help institutions like FHSU better serve their first-gen populations.

The term “first-generation” often sparks conversations about privilege and access, touching on the shifting demographics of students entering higher education. As tuition costs continue to rise and the demand for a skilled workforce grows, the implications of supporting first-generation students have never been more significant. As a regional public university, Fort Hays State University has always focused on access and has a long history of supporting a wide demographic of first-generation students.

Stories from these students reveal a nuanced landscape of aspirations, anxieties, and resilience. These students may not have access to the kind of college guidance many peers take for granted. Yet, they enter the halls of academia with dreams that often depend not just on their success in college but also on the prosperity of their families and communities.

The data surrounding first-generation college success is telling. Research has shown that first-gen students often experience higher dropout rates than their peers. While numerous barriers exist – financial stressors, lack of familial support in navigating college life, and unfamiliarity with the academic culture – universities like FHSU focus on structural changes to improve these metrics. With the launch of the FirstGen Forward initiatives, institutions are equipped to analyze and implement strategies that truly enhance the first-generation college experience, embracing and leveraging the struggles and strengths of these students.

In a world that often emphasizes individual success, the narrative of first-generation college students serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in community and collective perseverance. Each story unravels a tapestry of hope, determination, and shared dreams, culminating on this special day of recognition on November 8. FHSU students like Ashton and countless others embody the spirit of being first-generation: they challenge the status quo and redefine success for themselves and their families.

Ultimately, the real success of FHSU's endeavors will be seen in our enrollment and job placement numbers, familial pride, and stories we tell about the bright futures that await students like Ashton. Each degree conferred will be more than an institutional data point; it will be a testament to the sacrifices and barriers overcome. The First-Generation College Celebration marks the anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act, which has helped millions of first-generation students fulfill their dream of earning a college education. Many first-generation students are trailblazers in their families, and one key characteristic of this group of students is the persistence they bring to overcoming challenges, creating their own pathways to knowledge, and seizing control of their destiny.This year, at Fort Hays State University (FHSU), on November 7th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., we hosted a come-and-go event to celebrate our first-generation students, faculty, and staff. Those who stopped received a complimentary FHSU First Gen t-shirt. In addition to snacks, activities included a photo booth, first-gen trivia, and first-gen word search.Key first-gen recruitment and retention strategies at FHSU center on critical investments, including the Access to Academic Opportunity Grant (AAOG) and the First-to-Finish Living and Learning Community. The AAOG grant aims to navigate the financial barriers that many of these students face. However, the grant is not only about funding; it also emphasizes mentorship. The idea is to create a robust support system where seasoned upper-level students and alumni guide newcomers, sharing insights that could ease their transition to higher education. Stories from last year indicate a rising tide of peer support networks that continue to form within FHSU and the growing sense of community among first-generation students.First-to-Finish Living and Learning Community (LLC) students live together in Victor E. Village and take classes together. Fall semester classes include a student success class and a leadership class titled Discovering Leadership. The LLC focuses on helping the students grow in their leadership capacity by focusing on the CORE (confidence, optimism, resilience, and engagement) leadership model. The class helps students learn about the knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with their leadership development.“It has been amazing to watch these students flourish at FHSU. From the welcome weekend until now, you can tell they have the confidence to ask for help when needed, find their stride, and grow in the FHSU pride. I believe this success is due to many faculty and staff at the university supporting these students and helping them find the resources they need to be successful,” shared Jaden Rahe, director of student engagement.Ashton Dawley is an excellent example of how our first-generation students are making the most of their college experience. He has taken advantage of opportunities in the ceramics department, enabling him to work with renowned artists and practice ceramic techniques that are highly complex. Ashton is exceptionally talented. Given his experience at FHSU thus far, Ashton has decided to become a college professor. He is focused on being the first in his family to earn a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s and doctorate.Our student affairs professionals are committed to driving institutional transformation by enhancing academic and co-curricular opportunities for first-generation students. Our teamparticipates in several state and national events dedicated to advancing the first-generation college student experience.In the spring, First-to-Finish and first-generation FHSU students get to attend the annual Ad Astra First Generation Conference on a Kansas college campus. This conference brings first-generation students from universities and high schools across Kansas together for a shared experience with the desired outcome of improved persistence to graduation and a better-prepared Kansas workforce.Another cornerstone element of FHSU’s first-generation college student initiative involves collaborating with NASPA’s FirstGen Forward program. This is a nationwide network dedicated to championing first-generation students. The FirstGen Forward Network features best practices and insights that can help institutions like FHSU better serve their first-gen populations.The term “first-generation” often sparks conversations about privilege and access, touching on the shifting demographics of students entering higher education. As tuition costs continue to rise and the demand for a skilled workforce grows, the implications of supporting first-generation students have never been more significant. As a regional public university, Fort Hays State University has always focused on access and has a long history of supporting a wide demographic of first-generation students.Stories from these students reveal a nuanced landscape of aspirations, anxieties, and resilience. These students may not have access to the kind of college guidance many peers take for granted. Yet, they enter the halls of academia with dreams that often depend not just on their success in college but also on the prosperity of their families and communities.The data surrounding first-generation college success is telling. Grassland bird listed as threatened in Kansas, endangered on southern Great Plains

TOPEKA — Entrepreneur and conservationist Wayne Walker says the business of saving the lesser prairie chicken in Kansas required wider commitment to paying market rates to landowners dedicated to improving grassland habitat for the vulnerable birds.

He said companies involved in energy production within regions favored by the prairie chicken often had good intentions in terms of addressing the need for biological diversity and addressing climate change concerns. But, he said, too many balked at paying the true cost of a landowner setting aside large tracts for benefit of the colorful, reclusive prairie chicken.

Walker, owner of Common Ground Capital and CEO of LPC Conservation, said on Kansas Reflector’s podcast that programs designed to aid the lesser prairie chicken tended to fall short because they didn’t pay farmers or ranchers enough to justify multigenerational shifts in land use.

“You can’t keep asking the ranchers to be good conservationists for free. That’s essentially what we’ve done to date&nbsp;and … is why we have lost so much prairie and this bird’s in trouble,” Walker said.

“Our financial system is designed to make a profit&nbsp;and conservation historically has been kept out of that model,” he said. “Until a rancher can make a profit conserving prairie because of the prairie chicken or some other ecosystem service —&nbsp;just like he can make money selling his wind rights or his solar rights&nbsp;or his mineral rights or his development rights —&nbsp;it’s not going to turn around.”

In 2023, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service controversially<a href="https://www.fws.gov/press-release/2022-11/lesser-prairie-chicken-listed-under-endangered-species-act" target="_blank">&nbsp;listed two distinct population segments of the lesser prairie chicken under the Endangered Species Act due to</a>&nbsp;habitat loss and fragmentation of grassland areas.

In the northern region, including western Kansas, southeastern Colorado, western Oklahoma and the northeast Texas panhandle, the lesser prairie-chicken was listed as threatened. The southern range of the lesser prairie-chicken in eastern New Mexico and the southwest Texas panhandle was listed as endangered due to the threat of extinction.

The decision of federal regulators enraged members of the Kansas congressional delegation who denounced the listing as an overreach damaging to the state’s agriculture and energy sectors.

U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann, a Republican serving the 1st District that includes much of the bird’s habitat in Kansas, said the listing amounted to a “proxy war on American agriculture and energy sectors that are vital to our economy.”

He said the federal government should get out of the way of farmers, ranchers and landowners, who he described as the “original conservationists.”

Years of brawling among energy companies, environmentalists, elected officials and federal regulators led to the listing and fueled the inevitable flurry of lawsuits.

Mike Smith, who works with LPC Conservation projects in five states, said the population of lesser prairie chicken had dropped to perhaps 25,000. In certain years, due to good rainfall, there might be a temporary surge in the population. Drought has the opposite impact on the birds.

The long-term spiral, despite a hodgepodge of voluntary programs and initiatives, justified intervention with the federal Endangered Species Act, Smith said.

He said mandates from the federal government could prompt greater environmental awareness to deterioration of bird habitat and raise the profile of approaches anchored to business principles.

“The Endangered Species Act provides a cudgel, and, you know, keeps everybody honest, but the outsourcing of conservation work to the states and then having state rangers or state wildlife managers in the land business has not worked,” Smith said. “They don’t know how to cobble together the last of the best properties&nbsp;in order to make … these easements, which is what Wayne (Walker) has done in his conservation banking business.”

Walker said collaboration could work if there was sufficient financial incentive for property owners to redirect land resources in a way that also benefitted the bird.

“The&nbsp;old conservation models&nbsp;have done some good things, but overall we’re losing, right?” Walker said. “It just became clear to me … we had to bring some business acumen to it.”

Common Ground Capital works to identify landowners with property that possessed ecological and biological features that could be restored and preserved through a system of conservation banking. Property owners enter into long term protective land easements that serve interests of prairie chickens in exchange for a prescribed revenue stream. It would be ideal to build strongholds for the kesser prairie chicken with 25,000 to 50,000 acres each, Walker said.

When the varied interests come together, companies with a large imprint on the environment — energy companies, for example — purchase conservation credits to position themselves as more clean and green. Wind and solar industries have taken to conservation banking more than oil and gas interests.

“We approach it like a developer would approach building a housing development. You know, location, location.&nbsp;Where are the birds? Where are there ranchers there that are willing to talk to us about this arrangement. And then, of course, with the Fish and Wildlife Service, there are standards we have to meet,” Walker said.

Listing of the bird as threatened and endangered ought to build momentum for conservation banking. Common Ground Capital, and companies like it, would profit by bringing the diverse interests together.

“I really don’t want to be apologizing for that. I mean, people have&nbsp;accused me&nbsp;of trying to get rich off the prairie chicken,” Walker said. “Look, if it’s a get-rich-quick scheme, it is the worst one in history&nbsp;because we do this for 12 years, and we still aren’t quite in the black yet.”

Advocates of imperiled lesser prairie chicken say market incentives key to expanding habitat

Fort Hays North Central Technical College in Hays broke ground on Tuesday on a new building.

The new building will feature classrooms, office spaces and workshops to support its construction and Commercial Driver License programs.

North Central Tech President Eric Burks said the 29,000-square-foot building will double the capacity of these programs.

"We've been turning students away. ... We've had to tell students that they're on a waiting list, and we're probably not going to get through that waiting list," he said.

The new two-story facility, 2205 Wheatland Ave., will be designed to serve more students and staff beginning next fall. It will be east of the parking lot next to the administration building.

Multiple grants and community partnerships, including contributions from the city of Hays support the project.

Hays Mayor Sandy Jacobs congratulated Burks and North Central Tech on the project at the ceremony.

"Thank you, Fort Hays Tech North Central. We appreciate your investment in our community and look forward to what the future brings," Jacobs said.

North Central Tech obtained grants from the Department of Commerce and the Patterson Family Foundation, which contributed $750,000 to support the building's construction.

Diana Baumann, North Central Tech vice president of finance and Hays operations, opened the event and introduced several speakers, such as Managing Principal Phillip Jordan from Alloy Architecture and North Central Tech student Cooper Hosman.

Hosman is from Ellinwood and is a plumbing, heating and air conditioning program student at North Central Tech. He also intends to study in the electrical program.

Hosman said he enrolled at North Central Tech because of its hands-on learning opportunities.

"Although the current facilities are good and allow us to work in groups, our classrooms and shops can be very tight spaces," he said.

Jordan has been involved in five projects with Fort Hays State University and contributed to the building's design.

He said the ceremony symbolized the beginning of a bright future for both students and the neighboring communities.

"This new facility will not only provide a place where students can develop the expertise needed to thrive in the construction industry, but it will also provide a pipeline of talent to the ever-increasing demand for a highly skilled workforce," Jordan said.

Fort Hays Tech North Central breaks ground on new building

Incumbent Rep. Barb Wasinger handily won her bid for reelection on Tuesday to represent Hays in the Kansas House of Representatives.

Republican Barb Wasinger received 7,548 votes to her challenger, Democrat&nbsp;Joseph Lantz IV's 2,744 votes.&nbsp;

Wasinger will begin her fourth term at the statehouse this spring.

Wasinger highlighted some issues that will be important to her in the coming 2025 session.

"I know we want to work on property tax relief for the state," Rep. Barb Wasinger said, "and I really need personally to work on the cybersecurity bill because there's a sunset on it. I think it's important to keep all Kansans safe because the state has so much information that we need to protect."

Wasinger highlighted the passage of a water bill during the last session.

"We need to continue funding water and making sure we protect our water resources and make sure we continue to use them wisely," she said.&nbsp;

Wasinger said water conservation is best done by private interests. 

"Western Kansas LEMAs&nbsp; [Local Enhanced Management Areas] work so well because it is private water ownership that decided they needed to be careful with what they did in their irrigation. I'm not a fan of government taking over everything," she said.&nbsp;

She said Republicans in the Legislature also worked last session to gain tax relief for disabled veterans and senior citizens.&nbsp;

"We need to make sure we keep our older generation here in Kansas and not make them want to leave and tax them out of their homes," Wasinger said.&nbsp;

Wasinger said education is fully funded.&nbsp;

"I think we are doing a good job so far," she said on the issue of education.

"I am so honored to be able to do this job," Wasinger said. "It's been an amazing experience for me, and I am glad to serve. I'm thankful they give me the opportunity to do so."

Barb Wasinger handily won her bid for reelection on Tuesday to represent Hays in the Kansas House of Representatives.Republican Barb Wasinger received 7,548 votes to her challenger, Democrat&nbsp;Joseph Lantz IV's 2,744 votes.&nbsp;Wasinger will begin her fourth term at the statehouse this spring.Wasinger highlighted some issues that will be important to her in the coming 2025 session."I know we want to work on property tax relief for the state," Rep. Rep. Wasinger looks forward to fourth term in Kansas Legislature

Russell residents on Tuesday approved a 3/4-cent city sales tax that will support water infrastructure, including expenses related to the R9 Ranch water project.

The ballot measure passed with 1,196 yes votes to 651 no votes—64.75% to 35.25%.

Russell owns 18% of the R9 Ranch, which Hays first purchased in 1995 as a long-term water supply resource. Russell bought in a year later, in 1996.

The project's estimated total cost to bring water from wells in Edwards County to Hays and Russell is now $140 million.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4f03c36d-505d-4863-9ddb-87c2b4b7e242">Russell had been building reserves in its water fund to pay for the project, but it was forced to spend $1.3 million to replace its Plant B when it failed three years ago, Russell Mayor Jim Cross said at a recent forum.</a>

Regulatory hurdles and court battles have also delayed the project and driven up its cost.

In 2015, Hays and Russell applied to change the ranch's water rights from irrigation to municipal use and submitted a water transfer application to the state in 2016.

In February 2024, the cities received a&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/8d8e87f6-e3c9-4950-bcea-9cac40e269bd">favorable ruling for the transfer</a>.

Along the way, the&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/a356c3c3-47d3-49eb-98d5-fe030ffd2b8e">Water Protection Association of Central Kansas</a>&nbsp;(WaterPACK) has filed numerous objections to the project.&nbsp;

Regulatory delays have continued, and in early October,&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/c7dd78a9-6785-4137-8502-4046eab09f91">Russell and Hays filed a lawsuit against the Edwards County Commission</a>, the Edwards County Planning Commission and several other parties, claiming illegal zoning practices designed to block the project southwest of Kinsley.

From the first time I visited a relative who owned hens and gathered eggs, I wanted to live in the country and raise chickens. That dream came true when I fell in love with a man who also liked rural living and fresh eggs. My mother-in-law gifted us a flock of leghorns, and poof--I was a chicken lady!

Over decades, we’ve raised Easter eggers, Plymouth Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, and now ISO browns, learning that white-eared chickens lay white eggs, red-eared hens brown, and funny-eared ones pink, blue, and green. Years raising chickens has provided info nuggets about this creature scientists identify as the closest living relative to a T Rex.

Chicken keepers aka tenders know their birds are smart. It’s time others learned too. As a kid, I marveled at a hen at Knott’s Berry Farm playing tunes on a tiny piano. While I never had the patience to teach our girls this trick, they know their daily snack schedule and line up at 8 a.m. for fresh veggies and again at noon for mealy worms. If delivery runs late, they tattle to the neighborhood. They even know when I hunt grasshoppers and wait impatiently to gobble crunchy treats.

I always suspected my chickens had their own language. Research confirms this. They make at least 30 different sounds and combine those for scores of purposes. Though we no longer have broody hens, I loved listening to mommas talking to eggs incubating beneath them and later to their fluffball chicks. Once those peeps matured enough mom could take them on a walkabout, I’d hear her instructing them about where to forage and what to eat. While studying chickens, I learned hens teach their young to drink. Now, I have to figure out what chicken noise means “Salud.”

Not only can chickens talk to one another and their developing chicks, they have better vision than humans. They see more clearly, in more colors, and according to one source, each eye has its own job—the right sees food and near objects while the left focuses on distances and danger. No wonder I can’t sneak up on the wily boogers. Another site stated that they see ultra violet light as well, which aids them in determining chick and egg health. That might explain how hens know to roll bad eggs out of nests. Why waste energy on a defective egg? Several sites state that chickens recognize at least 100 faces. For sure, our girls know who’s who at our house.

They confirmed this recently when the hubs left town on a long hunting trip. They laid their normal number of eggs on day 1 and 2. Production then dwindled from 4 to 3 to 2 and finally to 1 before he returned. Once he delivered their morning greens, we gathered the normal 4 eggs a day. Although I delivered treats on schedule, they missed seeing him!

After spending decades with chickens, I’ve decided a T-Rex for a pet might be okay. If they act anything like their miniature descendants, they’d make us laugh every day. However, those eggs would be doozers. Not sure I own a big enough skillet. As for cleaning the pen—yech!

🎥 Holiday happenings in Hays kick off in November

ELLIS COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 11:30a.m. Wednesday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Ford Ranger driven by Jayden Renee&nbsp;Hinrichs, 17, Bloomer, Wisconsin, was westbound in the&nbsp;2300 block of Old 40 Old.&nbsp; The pickup enter the north ditch, returned to the roadway where driver overcorrected.&nbsp; The pickup traveled back into the north ditch broadside and rolled.

EMS transported Hinrichs to Hays Medical Center. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Magistrate Judge Richard Flax will retain his position in the 23rd Judicial District.

Voters cast 904 votes for Flax, and 659 votes for challenger Travis Phillips, a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.&nbsp;

Flax was first elected to the magistrate judge position in 1996.
