The Fort Hays State women's basketball team remained in the Top 25 of both the WBCA and D2CSC Top 25 Polls to finish the 2024-25 season. FHSU ranked No. 12 in the WBCA Top 25 and No. 16 in the D2CSC Top 25. The Tigers had an overall record of 28-5 and advanced to the semifinals of the Central Regional in the NCAA Tournament.

Fort Hays State was among four teams from the Central Region to finish among the Top 20 of the WBCA poll. Pittsburg State, which went on to the national semifinals, finished at No. 2, while FHSU was No. 12, Concordia-St. Paul was No. 13, and Southwest Minnesota State was No. 15. 🏀 FHSU women No. 12/16 in final national polls of 2024-25

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fort Hays State Baseball moved back a couple of spots in the latest ABCA Division II Top 30 Poll, released on Tuesday (Apr. 1). The Tigers are No. 26 in the latest rankings, moving back a couple of spots after being ranked No. 24 last week.

The Tigers are coming off a 1-2 weekend in their road series at then No. 3 ranked Central Missouri. The Mules moved up to the No. 1 ranking in the nation this week and join the Tigers as the only two MIAA programs among the Top 30. Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State are both receiving votes. All four teams have over 20 wins overall this season.

In the supplemental online D2Baseball Poll released on Monday (Mar. 31) this week, the Tigers were ranked No. 25. Central Missouri is No. 3 in that poll. The Tigers moved into the receiving votes section of the NCBWA Top 25 Poll released last week.

Since the Tigers took one of the three games in Warrensburg last weekend, they remain on top of the MIAA standings at 16-4. Central Missouri is currently 13-4 in the conference, 1.5 games back of FHSU. Central Oklahoma is two games back at 14-6 and Pittsburg State is 3.5 games back at 12-7.Fort Hays State hosts Washburn in a single MIAA game on Tuesday afternoon in Hays. The Tigers then have a three-game non-conference series scheduled against UC-Colorado Springs on the weekend in Hays.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Kris Bubic struck out eight in six shutout innings in his first start in nearly two years, and the Kansas City Royals spoiled Milwaukee's home opener with an 11-1 victory over the winless Brewers on Monday.

Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez homered for the Royals. Jonathan India had three hits and drove in two runs one day after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-jonathan-india-21ca211a9ceab0a802ad3e0161c98cd7">he was struck</a>&nbsp;on the left side of his face by a 98.9-mph pitch from Cleveland's Emmanuel Clase.

Bubic (1-0) allowed three hits and walked two in his first start since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/braves-royals-0901437988ea02e1d63792b0b8fcbcb7">April 15, 2023.</a>&nbsp;The 27-year-old left-hander had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-kris-bubic-e784a60aeb5aa900ac518966b0a6446b">Tommy John surgery</a>&nbsp;later that month, and he filled a relief role in all 27 of his appearances last season, going 1-1 with a 2.67 ERA.

The two-time&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/milwaukee-brewers-984ada478789a7727c5f1333df7afddd">defending NL Central champion</a>&nbsp;Brewers are 0-4 for the first time since 2015, when they finished 68-94.

Garcia connected for a 428-foot drive to center on a 2-1 fastball from Elvin Rodriguez (0-1) in the second. Perez went deep on a 2-2 slider from Elvis Peguero in the seventh, sending a 418-foot drive just inside the left-field foul pole.

Brewers associate manager Rickie Weeks was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Brennan Miller after arguing a ball-strike call from the dugout in the seventh.

After India and Bobby Witt opened the game with back-to-back singles, Rodríguez retired the next two batters and seemed on the verge of getting out of the inning until Michael Massey ripped a 1-1 fastball that bounced over the left-field wall for a ground-rule RBI double. Hunter Renfroe followed with a two-run single.

The Brewers have been outscored 47-15 through their first four games. They opened their season by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/torpedo-bats-yankees-6ac6c797ea935941ed1c0d0e51a7d870">getting swept</a>&nbsp;in a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.

HAYS, Kan. - The 24th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team has moved up its scheduled first pitch against Washburn on Tuesday (April 1) to 2 p.m. due to potential severe weather later in the evening.

This is the second of three midweek games between the Tigers and Ichabods, with FHSU scoring five runs in the top of the ninth to win 7-5 on the road two weeks ago.

Fort Hays State enters the contest 21-8 overall and 16-4 in MIAA play, tied for first place in the loss column with No. 3 Central Missouri. The Ichabods are 17-15 overall and 10-10 in conference action.

⚾ FHSU pushes up Tuesday start time

RPM Speedway hosted the 13th Annual Sunflower Classic with 144 race teams participating on Friday Night. John Martinez won the sport compact feature race, Zach Olmstead triumphed in the hobby stocks, Brandon Spanjer secured victory in the sport mods, Kyle Pfeifer emerged victorious in the stock cars, and Dakota Sproul dominated the modifieds.

One hundred and thirty-seven race teams checked into the RPM Speedway in Hays, Kansas, for the final night of the 2025 Sunflower Classic. Drivers and fans alike braved cold temperatures and strong northwest winds all night, but the racing action heated up quickly, with numerous close finishes all night long. Visiting victory lane were Connor Schwien in the sport compact, Blaine Walt in the sport mod, Dillon Richards in the hobby stock, Troy Burkhart in the stock car and Clay Money in the modified!

The sport compacts started the program off with one heat race won by John Martinez, their fifteen-lap main event featured a front row of Connor Schwien and Zack McLaughlin. Schwien took an early lead and never really looked back, in the closing moments Martinez made a push for the weekend sweep but was unable to pull it off. Connor Schwien picked up the win, second was John Martinez, third was Kyle Mortensen, fourth was Kaishen Brack and fifth was Brin McAtee. Hard charger in the event was John Martinez who gained five spots.

The sport mods ran second on the program, they ran three heat races won by Tyler Watts, Blaine Walt, and Douglas Beaman, their b-main was won by Connor Barnes. Their twenty-lap main event featured a front row of Tyler Watts and Blaine Walt, Watts held the advantage until right before halfway when Blaine Walt took over the race lead, a couple cautions in the second half kept Watts right on Walt’s tail but he was never able to get by.

Blaine Walt brought his Fury Chassis to victory lane for the first time in 2025, second was Tyler Watts, third was Riley Osantowski, fourth was Cody Gearhart and Brady Bencken finished fifth. Hard charger in the event was Carson Lang who gained thirteen spots, other nice runs included Jeff Ray up seven spots, Arie Schouten and Nick Hankins gained six spots each, Sam McCune and Dylan Cherry grabbed five spots each.

The stock cars ran the third main event of the evening, their three heat races were won by Brett Berry, Cole Czarneski, and Bobby Eubanks, rookie Hunter Smith won the b main. Their twenty-lap main event started with a front row of Johnny Yutterman and Kolby Stegman, quickly Jason Rogers and Troy Burkhart found their way to the front of the field, and the duo battled tightly throughout the contest. The veteran drivers raced each other cleanly, and on the final corner, Troy Burkhart powered through to win a drag race to the finish line, winning by less than eight-hundredths of a second. Troy Burkhart picked up his first win of 2025, second was David Murray Jr, third was Bobby Eubanks, fourth was Jason Rogers and fifth was Johnny Yutterman. Hard chargers in the event were Bobby Eubanks and Bill Brack who gained six spots each.

The modifieds ran the fourth main event of the evening, their heat races were won by Curtis Barnes, Greg Gustus and Clay Money, Dakota Sproul won the class’s b main. Their twenty-lap main event featured a front row of Greg Gustus and Tim Hamilton, Gustus fired off to the early lead, and Hamilton tried to keep pace. A few laps in, Clay Money and Tanner Black made runs to the lead battle, with Money and Gustus battling it out, Money got by and took his new Rage Chassis to victory lane for the first time in 2025, second was Tanner Black, third went to Greg Gustus, fourth was Jeremy Frenier and Friday Night’s feature winner Dakota Sproul, took home fifth place. Matt Bonine was the hard charger with nine spots gained, other nice runs included Dakota Sproul up eight spots, Colton Czapanskiy up seven spots, David Murray Jr and Jeremy Frenier up six spots each, and Dalton Bell gained five spots.

The hobby stocks finished the program out, they ran four heat races won by Dillon Thompson, Dillon Richards, Brayden Hurley, and Zach Olmstead. Dylan Bell and Levi Jones won the two b mains. Their twenty-lap main event started with a front row of Dillon Thompson and Cody Williams, the duo raced side-by-side throughout the feature, and late in the feature Dillon Richards brought himself into the battle. Williams led the first fifteen laps before Richards got by and held him off. Dillon Richards picked up his ninth win of the season so far in 2025, collecting several wins in Arizona during the IMCATV Winter Nationals, second was Cody Williams, third was Dylan Bell, fourth was Dillon Thompson and fifth was Dion Priddy. Hard charger in the event was Tylan Lambertus who gained fourteen spots, other nice runs included Trent Matson and Dylan Bell up ten spots each, Dillon Richards grabbed six spots, while Zach Olmstead, Terry Greuter and Cole Schulte all gained five spots each.

Racing action returns to the RPM Speedway on Saturday, April 12th! The next racing event in Western Kansas will be the High Limit Show in Dodge City, Saturday April 5th! Big names like Rico Abreu, Tyler Courtney, Brad Sweet and more will battle it out in Dodge City!

RPM Speedway: Sunflower Classic results

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Longtime manager Peter Vermes is out at Sporting Kansas City.

The MLS club announced Monday that it “mutually agreed to part ways” with Vermes after nearly two decades and with Sporting KC chasing its first win since mid-September of last season.

Kerry Zavagnin was appointed interim head coach.

Vermes became the club's technical director in 2006 before being elevated to head coach in 2009. The member of the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame ranks third on the all-time MLS list with 203 regular-season wins.

He is the only person to win the MLS Cup as a player and a coach with the same team — he led Kansas City to the 2000 title as a central defender, then coached the team to the 2013 championship.

“It would be hard to list all of the people I want to thank after 20 seasons in managerial positions at Sporting Kansas City,” Vermes said in a statement. “I am thankful to everyone, especially ownership for giving me the opportunity of being a steward of this club for the past two decades. I wish the club nothing but the best in the future.”

Vermes led the club to 11 playoff appearances and four first-place finishes in the regular season. The club also won U.S. Open Cup titles in 2012, 2015 and 2017. Last season, the team reached the U.S. Open Cup Final but finished with an 8-19-7 record for its third straight losing campaign.

Vermes' final game was Saturday, when Sporting KC fell 2–1 to FC Dallas for a fifth loss in their first six games of the 2025 season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tanner Bibee pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, Kyle Mazardo hit a two-run homer and Gabriel Arias and Daniel Schneemann added solo shots as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Sunday.

Bibee (1-0) gave up no runs and two hits in 6 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander bounced back after he was scheduled to make the opening day start for Cleveland on Thursday, but was scratched because of an illness.

Royals starter Michael Wacha (0-1) threw 87 pitches over four innings and allowed one run and four hits with two strikeouts and four walks. None of Kansas City's starting pitchers got past the fifth inning in any game during the three-game season-opening series.

Mazardo's home run traveled 417 feet nearly into the right field fountains off Sam Long to give the Guardians a 3-0 lead. It was his second home run of the series.

Avery Howell, another freshman, scored 18 points for USC, which went on a 12-0 run during the third quarter to take a 46-39 lead, matching its biggest advantage of the day.

Kansas State (28-8) kept pushing, though, and tied it at 51-all early in the fourth on a layup by Ayoka Lee. Rayah Marshall responded with two straight buckets for USC.

A layup by Serena Sundell got the Wildcats within 60-59. Smith responded with a pair of free throws, and USC was solid enough at the foul line to close it out.

Sundell scored 22 points and Lee had 12 for the fifth-seeded Wildcats (28-8), who fell short of the program’s second Elite Eight appearance and first since 1982. WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The 24th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team evened up its series with No. 3 Central Missouri Saturday afternoon with a 9-4 road victory. The Tigers (21-7, 16-3 MIAA) never trailed in the contest, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning before piling on six runs over the final three frames. The five-run loss is the largest margin of defeat for the Mules (21-7, 12-4 MIAA) this season.

The win is Fort Hays State's first victory over Central Missouri since 2016 (2/26/16), snapping a 28-game losing streak overall and a 19-game road losing streak to the Mules (last road win 3/12/11). It is Fort Hays State's second win over a top-five ranked team under head coach Justin Wichert&nbsp;after beating No. 4 Missouri Southern in 2023 (4/2/23).

The Tigers struck early with three runs on three hits in the top of the first. Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;was hit by a pitch on the fourth delivery of the game before Tony Moore&nbsp;reached on a single. Trey DeGarmo then drove in the pair with a ground-rule double to right center, giving Fort Hays State a 2-0 lead. Derek Woolwine&nbsp;kept things rolling with a single to center, plating DeGarmo to push the advantage to 3-0.

The home team answered right back with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning, but Paul Panduro&nbsp;was able to get out of the frame with the lead after getting a pair of groundouts with a runner in scoring position.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a go-ahead RBI double in the seventh inning after Maikel Garcia tied it with a homer four batters earlier to help lead the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Saturday.

Garcia led off the seventh with a 405-foot homer off Paul Sewald (0-1). Cavan Biggio followed with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Dairon Blanco, who stole second. With two outs, Witt lined a double to left to score Blanco with the go-ahead run.

Guardians six-time All-Star José Ramírez left in the sixth inning with a sprained right wrist after he was hurt in the third inning while attempting to steal second base. Gabriel Arias replaced Ramírez at third base.

Bo Naylor gave the Indians a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the second, and Carlos Santana scored Steven Kwan on a sacrifice fly in the third.

Kwan's solo homer in the fifth put Cleveland up 3-1.

Royals starter Seth Lugo threw five innings and allowed three earned runs and four hits and struck out four with three walks. Daniel Lynch IV (1-0) followed Lugo and threw two perfect innings for the win. Carlos Estévez walked one and struck out one in the ninth to earn his first save for Kansas City.

Guardians starter Gavin Williams allowed two runs and four hits in five innints with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Tigers could not get much going offensively in the game and only got runners into scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings. 🥎 Strong outing from Egger helps Tigers split at Emporia State

SALINA - The Hays High softball team opened the 2025
season with a pair of wins over Olathe East Saturday at the Salina South fields. The Indians took game one
9-3 then took the second contest 10-5.

Game 1: Hays 9, Olathe East 3
 Hays used a six-run third inning to take the lead for good. Adeline Kippes
drove in the first run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Riley
Dreher was also hit by a pitch which gave the Indians a 2-1 lead. Brooklynn Dinkel
drove in two with a double. Another run scored on an Alyse Zimmerman groundout.
Dinkel scored the final run of the frame on a passed ball.

Dreher added a two-run triple an inning later to push the lead
to 8-1. Zimmerman had a bunt single in the fifth which scored Dinkel for a 9-1
lead.

Dreher allowed one run on three hits with seven strikeouts
and four walks over four innings for the win. Lanie Becker pitched the final
three innings.

Game 2: Hays 10, Olathe East 5
 The Indians scored in every inning but one and never trailed. Four of the runs
came off of Hawks errors.

Hays scored three in the first, one in the third then two in
the fourth and fifth for an 8-0 lead. They added another in the top of the
sixth before Olathe East answered with four in the bottom of the sixth to pull
within 9-4. Alyse Zimmerman drove in an insurance run with an RBI triple in the

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Fort Hays State Tennis battled to its first win in MIAA play since the 2017-18 season on Saturday with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Missouri Western. The win snapped the long 47-match drought in conference play, lifting the Tigers to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Griffons fell to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State's last win in MIAA play was on March 13, 2018 by a score of 5-4 over Emporia State. The streak ended just over two weeks past seven calendar years. The Tigers were already knocking at the door on Friday in a competitive loss to a perennially solid Northwest Missouri State team, but they finally broke through on Saturday when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;went toe-to-toe Johanna Priedite in an epic singles match that lasted about three hours. With the team score knotted at 3-3, Alfonso forced a third set in her singles match and went on to win, snapping a six-match losing streak to the Griffons. FHSU's last win over MWSU was in 2017 by a score of 5-4 in Hays. It was their first win in St. Joseph since 2014.

Aside from Alfonso being the ultimate ender of the Tigers' losing string in conference play, five other Tigers picked up big wins to get FHSU and Alfonso to the winner-take-all scenario in the No. 2 singles match.

LARNED - The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball (2-0) team opened the season with
a doubleheader sweep of the Larned Indians Friday in Larned.

GAME 1: TMP 8, Larned 0 TMP’s Ty Schmeidler and Grant Nehls combined on a no-hitter,
and Caden Dinkel drove in a pair of runs as the Monarchs picked up the 8-0
victory.

The Monarchs got the scoring started early, scoring two runs
in the top half of the first inning.

Ian Nehls doubled with one out, and then, following a Larned
error, scored on a double steal, giving TMP the 1-0 lead.

Ty Schmeidler also scored a run on an error in the inning,
putting TMP up 2-0.

TMP’s lone run in the second inning came on a wild pitch.

After back-to-back scoreless innings, TMP got back on the
scoreboard, scoring three times in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

Jacob Seib led off the fifth with a walk and eventually came
in to score on back-to-back errors by the Indians.

TMP added a second run on an error that scored Ty Schmeidler,
who had doubled, making it 5-0 TMP.

Their final run of the inning game on a Connor Breit fielder’s
choice that made it 6-0 TMP.

In the top of the sixth inning, TMP’s Cadel Dinkel drove in
a pair of runs with a double to left, putting the Monarchs up 8-0.

GAME 2: TMP 11, Larned 4 The Monarchs scored in all but one inning en route to an
11-4 win over the Indians in game two.

TMP put up three runs in the first inning. With one out, Ian
