🎙 Ellis Co. Historical Society asks public to help name new heritage center

VICTORIA —&nbsp;What started as a one-day retail business sidewalk sale 41 years ago has grown into a two-day family-oriented community festival in Victoria, honoring its German heritage.

The annual Herzogfest set for Friday and Saturday on Victoria's Main Street, is one of the largest free celebrations in western Kansas.&nbsp;

In keeping with the German theme, the Herzogfest will include a polka Mass at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by a polka dance with traditional polka music and German songs.

"We try to have that for our older generations and keep it going for our younger folks," said Brenton Hoffman, Herzogfest president. "We have some really good singers."

There'll also be plenty of German food to enjoy at the Heritage Marketplace, which opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Other food varieties will be offered by vendors, food trucks, and non-profit groups.&nbsp;

A special beer brewed at Defiance Brewing Co. in Hays will available for purchase. "The Zog," a German pilsner, made its first appearance last year in honor of the festival's 40th year.&nbsp;

Friday afternoon's Zog Olympics features beer-involved games of skills with two-person teams.

Horseshoes competition opens up the evening events at 6 p.m.

Concerts will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday by Texas artist Parker Ryan, followed by rock group Gannon Fremin &amp; CCREV at 9 p.m.

Saturday morning kicks off bright and early with a 5K run/walk kicks off at 8 a.m.

The Herzog Hot Rods, Car, Truck &amp; Tractor show starts at 10 a.m.&nbsp;

Other Saturday activities include children's music performer Jammin' Randy, pictures with Clifford the Big Red Dog, 3 on 3 basketball at the Victoria Elementary School, valve cover races, cornhole tournament, bingo at the Victoria VFW, and free swimming at the city pool from 1 to 4 p.m.

Stein hoist contests will be held for kids and adults, with water glasses for the kids and beer steins for the grownups. "No spilling allowed," Hoffman said.

The regional favorite Wes Cossman Band takes the stage at 7 p.m. and then the country/rock Huser Brother Band at 9 p.m.

Fifty/fifty cash raffles will precede the late concerts both nights.

Severe thunderstorms in forecast for NW Kansas for tonight

Pedal through Kansas history on Saturday with the Tour Die Kapellen bike ride, a journey through small towns that immerses you in rich culture.

The fifth-annual Tour of Chapels features stops at St. Catherine Church in Catharine, The Basilica on the Plains in Victoria, Holy Cross Church in Pfeifer and St. Francis Church in Munjor.

Kay Werth, president of the Hays Area Bicyclists, said the concept originated to showcase Ellis County's history and culture while promoting health.

"We thought Ellis County had so much to offer," she said. "It promotes wellness, geography, limestone structures and beautiful landscapes."

The Hays Area Bicyclists is a nonprofit that supports health through cycling. The Tour of the Chapels was created as a joint effort among four rural communities in Ellis County to celebrate Volga-German heritage.

Cyclists can choose from a 15-mile casual ride to a 100-mile journey that begins at Hays Municipal Park, 100 Main St. While most routes are on asphalt roads, the 54-mile mixed-surface route includes 27 miles of gravel.

Depending on the route chosen, cyclists can pedal to <a href="https://www.volgagerman.net/catharine-church">St. Catherine Church</a> in Catharine, <a href="https://www.stfidelischurch.com/">The Basilica on the Plains</a> in Victoria, <a href="http://www.kansastravel.org/holycrosschurch.htm">Holy Cross Church</a> in Pfeifer and <a href="http://www.kansastravel.org/stfrancischurchmunjor.htm">St. Francis Church</a> in Munjor.

Routes of 75 to 100 miles begin with a self-start between 6:45 a.m. and 7 a.m., while the 15-mile ride departs at 9 a.m. Saturday. You can view the Tour of the Chapels' schedule of events <a href="https://tourdiekapellen.com/2024-ride/#schedule2024">here</a>.

Werth said the 15-mile casual ride is ideal for first-timers. It is led by three experienced cyclists to ensure guidance and safety.

"We call that a beginner route because it gets people introduced to riding on the tour and how to communicate with others that they're cycling with," she said.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Department will patrol the routes, while the Hays Police Department will assist in escorting the convoy of bikes out of the city.

Registration costs $55 per person for the bike ride and $85 per person for the bus tour. On-site registration opens Saturday at 6:30 a.m.

Riders will receive a free shirt, an authentic German meal and drink tickets, which are required for the post-ride meal. The registration form is available <a href="https://tourdiekapellen.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/2024-Registration-Form.pdf">here</a>.

This year, the bus tour has been reduced from two buses to one with limited space and limited meal tickets available for purchase. You can contact haysareabicyclists@gmail.com to check availability.

"We're back to one bus, which is OK because of the amount of time it takes people to get on and off the bus. We want them to have as much time in the churches as they can," Werth said.

The bus tour, led by Jerry Braun, a descendant of the Volga Germans who arrived in Ellis County from Russia in 1876, will depart at 8:30 a.m. after the cyclists have left the area.

With help from the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau and the <a href="https://www.hayssymphony.org/">Hays Symphony</a>, most of the profits will go to the Hays Symphony this year. Next year, the ride will continue the tradition of distributing funds to a different church each year.

"We're going to put this on a five-year basis and donate the money to the four main churches," Werth said on how the concept came to be. "The fifth year, we're going to give the bulk of the money to the symphony."

Founded in 1914, the Hays Symphony Orchestra is the longest-running orchestra in Kansas. Its about 60 musicians include Fort Hays State University students and faculty, Hays area volunteers and guest musicians from throughout the state.

With 90 volunteers at each stop, attendees can enjoy snacks, water and music from the Hays Symphony at every church, except for the Basilica of the Plains, which will feature a local brass choir.

The after-ride party will feature music by Simply Tone from noon to 2 p.m. Adult beverages from <a href="https://www.defiancebeer.com/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR3_YpogTbu4Jt_wmjMmKkK5fxJ-DwJwZJisOV35kCnTsA6YY_n488WKVHA_aem_12orRt0S62cUeBzj9KIxAg">Defiance Brewery Co.</a>,&nbsp;and non-alcoholic refreshments will be available.

German meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but dishes will be boxed up for anyone who misses this time window. Some of the food offered will include cream potatoes, dumplings and green beans. Vegan options will be provided by <a href="https://www.lbbrewing.com/">Gella's Diner and LB Brewing Co</a>.

There are 50 registered participants on the bus tour, and about 230 people have signed up for the bike ride through Ellis County.

Werth said riders are likely to consider the weather conditions before signing up for the ride, with the expectation of a hot Saturday.

"We all believe in the power of prayer. We've had such great weather the last four years, but this year looks like it's going to be hot," she said.

Werth said after completing the ride, participants feel satisfaction and enjoy getting to know the community.

Fort Hays State University announces spring 2024 Deans' Honor Roll

Join me in congratulating the tremendous accomplishment for this graduated high school senior Chase Schumacher, as he received not only his high school diploma, but his college diploma at the same time. He worked hard on improving himself in order to be eligible to graduate with his associates degree from Wichita State University of Applied Science &amp; Technology, Wichita, KS.

This young man persevered and stayed strong through some tough and unfortunate challenges during his years of high school. Enduring the tough losses of loved ones and going through a difficult journey of self-alignment, he decided he didn’t want life’s lemons like everyone else, he wants the whole damn tree.

Chase took it upon himself to search the state and find the most affordable classes that he could take in order to be qualified for an associate’s degree in Financial Administration. Nitpicking every individual class through-out all the community colleges in the state of Kansas to find the most cost-effective avenue to become the first senior in the history of Victoria High School, USD #432 to graduate high school and college at the same time.

All the trials and tribulations could’ve easily tipped the scales of life, leaving Chase to go down a dark path, yet he persevered and set an example for his peers. Encountering an unknown territory and creating a trail for the students who want more from life to follow.

Shortly before graduation Chase solely created and copyrighted “The Guided Growth Program." This program intends to help struggling and misunderstood students to find a better path and to live a better life. After seeking help and obtaining knowledge from a Masters of Social Work graduate of The University of Kansas, Chase created this program to aid all students involved and to help the struggling education system. The system is student autonomous and includes a situation-based balance system if ever in the need of guidance.

SubmittedJoin me in congratulating the tremendous accomplishment for this graduated high school senior Chase Schumacher, as he received not only his high school diploma, but his college diploma at the same time. He worked hard on improving himself in order to be eligible to graduate with his associates degree from Wichita State University of Applied Science &amp; Technology, Wichita, KS.This young man persevered and stayed strong through some tough and unfortunate challenges during his years of high school. Enduring the tough losses of loved ones and going through a difficult journey of self-alignment, he decided he didn’t want life’s lemons like everyone else, he wants the whole damn tree.Chase took it upon himself to search the state and find the most affordable classes that he could take in order to be qualified for an associate’s degree in Financial Administration. Nitpicking every individual class through-out all the community colleges in the state of Kansas to find the most cost-effective avenue to become the first senior in the history of Victoria High School, USD #432 to graduate high school and college at the same time.All the trials and tribulations could’ve easily tipped the scales of life, leaving Chase to go down a dark path, yet he persevered and set an example for his peers. Encountering an unknown territory and creating a trail for the students who want more from life to follow.Shortly before graduation Chase solely created and copyrighted “The Guided Growth Program." This program intends to help struggling and misunderstood students to find a better path and to live a better life. After seeking help and obtaining knowledge from a Masters of Social Work graduate of The University of Kansas, Chase created this program to aid all students involved and to help the struggling education system. The system is student autonomous and includes a situation-based balance system if ever in the need of guidance.Watch out for this young man, as he continues to make a greater difference and making everything he touches better, for himself and those around him.

Victoria student graduates high school, college in same semester

VICTORIA—The Ellis County Historical Society broke ground Thursday on a satellite location in the former St. John's Nursing Home in Victoria.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/8ef333ba-9b6f-4f12-88ea-0e385dfb7c94">The building is being developed by the Victoria Community Coalition. Work on senior apartments has begun on the north side of the former nursing home.</a>

The historical society will occupy 10,000 square feet on the south side of the building. The first phase of the project, which will cost about $175,000, will be storage on the second floor of the building.&nbsp;

The south portion of the building used to house the dining room, kitchen and original chapel. The second floor also once housed the living quarters for the nuns and other nursing home staff.

The second phase of the renovation will cost about $500,000 to $750,000 and include gallery space and perhaps a children's discovery center.

The former nursing home is very close to St. Fedlis Basilica, which 15,000 to 18,000 people visit annually. The historical society board members hope to lure some of the visitors to the new museum gallery in St. John's Place.

The storage area will open first. Work is set to start next week on the roof.

The historical society hopes to finish the gallery space by 2026 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the first farmers settling in Ellis County.

Ellis County will also be hosting a national convention of the Germans from Russia in 2026.

The historical society does not have space in its old stone church or the former brick Presbyterian Church to tell the full story of Ellis County, Amanda Rupp, historical society executive director, said.

The satellite location in Victoria will focus on the histories of the agricultural and oil industries in Ellis County.

The discovery center would offer hands-on learning activities for children centered on farming or the oil industry.

Rupp said the museum also hopes to have a display on the <a href="https://www.travelks.com/listing/walker-air-base-display/40220/">Walker Army Air Base</a>, which was about 2 and 1/2 miles northwest of Walker. The base was constructed during WWII to handle&nbsp;B-29 Bombers.

"It was only in operation for a couple of years, but it has a cult following on Facebook, and people still come in and say, 'Hey, my grandparents were stationed there.' They want to know about it and learn about it," Rupp said.

The historical society hopes to have a naming contest or survey to solicit input from the community on the name of the new museum site.

"We really want to be a resource for the entire county, but that brings visitors through Victoria and celebrates the heritage of the people who started this area and continued to stay here," Rupp said.

The historical society will apply for state grants and is&nbsp;looking for individual donors to support the second phase of the Victoria project.

Don Bickle, John O. Farmer and two anonymous donors have donated significantly to the project.

The new museum site will also have a gallery wall dedicated to the early families of Ellis County. Individuals or families can purchase plaques to honor these early settlers.

"Everybody wants to see their family up there. It's not a national museum. It's a county museum. We have a lot of stories to tell," Rupp said.

The Hays Arts Council Famous Figures is a living history and performance project open to fifth-grade students in Ellis County public and private schools.

It involves a short performance as a favorite person (living or deceased) from the present through the distant past.

The project promotes the use of research skills, awareness and appreciation of the qualities of a positive role model, thinking and writing in a creative manner, and developing acting and public speaking skills.

Kansas Department of Transportation

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin work soon on resurfacing projects along K-255 in Ellis County and U.S. 281 in Russell County.

The K-255 project will be completed first, starting on April 23. Project work includes a mill and overlay on the entirety of the roadway from the north city limits of Victoria to I-70. Upon completion of K-255, crews will resurface 12 miles of U.S. 281 in Russell County, starting near the I-70 interchange at Russell and ending at the Barton County line.

Traffic in both work zones will be directed by flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should plan for delays of 15 minutes or less.

KDOT expects the work to be completed by the end of May, conditions permitting.

Venture Corp. of Great Bend is the primary contractor for both projects with a combined contract cost of approximately $3 million. The Victoria FCCLA had 17 members compete in District B STAR Events in February and all of them received the top score there and advanced to state competitions.&nbsp; There are over 30 different STAR events a member can compete in.&nbsp; All of them require the members to create and carry out a project and then make visuals and present their ideas to a panel of 3 judges. At the state level 11 members received the top scores and qualified&nbsp;for national competitions that will take place&nbsp;in Seattle, WA this summer.&nbsp;

In addition, Aurora Nowlin was selected to serve as a member of the State FACTS Peer Education team and will receive training at nationals.&nbsp; Siage Moos was elected to serve as the&nbsp;2024-2025 District B President and will also receive training at the national level.&nbsp; These two members are not the only members going to nationals in a leadership role.&nbsp; Benjamin Dome will be running to a national officer position.&nbsp; He is the first national officer candidate for the chapter.&nbsp; He will go through an intense interview and testing procedure in addition to giving a speech to over 8000 members in attendance with the hopes of being elected to serve on the ten member national executive&nbsp;council for the 2024-2025 school year.&nbsp; All members have worked very hard all year to earn these honors and chances to be national winners.&nbsp; The chapter is extremely proud of them!

Victoria students advance to national competition

Sunday will be a long-awaited day for Victoria. Following almost two years of planning, community meetings, fundraising events and grant writing, the official groundbreaking ceremony for St. John’s Place will happen.&nbsp;

The community and area dignitaries are invited to the event at 11:30 a.m. on site.&nbsp; Lunch will be served, tours conducted. and hard work celebrated.

The Victoria Community Coalition Board is especially excited to conduct the tours of the old nursing home to give visitors a view of all the demolition work that has been done by community volunteers.

The work includes removing old wiring, plumbing, metal and insulation as well as stripping sheet rock down to the main supports.

The debris removed has filled more than 12 dumpsters. Many items removed have been sold, including copper, good insulation, refrigerators and coolers, bathtubs and sinks. All of this has boosted the Victoria Community Coalition treasury.

Board members estimate the labor donated will save more than $140,000 in demolition costs.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Another accomplishment has been the removal of all the asbestos in the part of the building that is Phase 1: 12 independent senior apartments. &nbsp;

The first part of construction will be the replacement of the entire roof.&nbsp;

In addition to the apartment complex, another part of the project is the construction of a satellite site for the Ellis County Historical Society.&nbsp; Work on its portion of the roof has begun. &nbsp;

Following almost two years of planning, community meetings, fundraising events and grant writing, the official groundbreaking ceremony for St. John’s Place will happen.&nbsp;The community and area dignitaries are invited to the event at 11:30 a.m. on site.&nbsp; Lunch will be served, tours conducted. and hard work celebrated.The Victoria Community Coalition Board is especially excited to conduct the tours of the old nursing home to give visitors a view of all the demolition work that has been done by community volunteers.The work includes removing old wiring, plumbing, metal and insulation as well as stripping sheet rock down to the main supports.<figure>

 </figure>The debris removed has filled more than 12 dumpsters. Many items removed have been sold, including copper, good insulation, refrigerators and coolers, bathtubs and sinks. All of this has boosted the Victoria Community Coalition treasury.Board members estimate the labor donated will save more than $140,000 in demolition costs.&nbsp; &nbsp;Another accomplishment has been the removal of all the asbestos in the part of the building that is Phase 1: 12 independent senior apartments. &nbsp;The first part of construction will be the replacement of the entire roof.&nbsp;In addition to the apartment complex, another part of the project is the construction of a satellite site for the Ellis County Historical Society.&nbsp; Work on its portion of the roof has begun. &nbsp;

St. John’s project in Victoria to break ground on Sunday

The Ellis County Commission approved almost $1 million in bids on Tuesday to complete the reconstruction of Cathedral Avenue in Victoria.

The road will be reconstructed from Sixth Street in Victoria to Old Highway 40.

Ellis County received a KDOT Cost Share Grant for the project.&nbsp;

KDOT awarded Ellis County 60% of eligible construction costs up to $700,000 for this project. 

A Kirkham Michael &amp; Associates bid for the construction engineering inspection was approved for $145,000.&nbsp;Vogts-Parga Construction was awarded the construction bid for $924,440.

The commission also approved Central Consolidated's $331,500 bid to replace the HVAC system at the Emergency Services Building.

The building has struggled with high humidity and is constantly running dehumidifiers, Darin Myers, county administrator, said.&nbsp; This high humidity causes doors not to shut, fixtures to show rust, and condensation on walls and windows, he said.

After review and testing through Glassman Corporation and an independent mechanical engineer, it was determined the rooftop units are not of adequate size or type to manage the temperature or humidity, Myers said in his report to the commission.

Central Consolidated out of Wichita was the low bidder.

Hays USD&nbsp;489 has offered to buy the old system for&nbsp;$3,500 per unit.

The county also approved a bid to replace the roof of the Ellis County Law Enforcement Center.&nbsp;

Roofmasters will use a lightweight concrete and foam mixture on the roof. The new roof will be laid on top of that layer. This will prevent the company from removing inches of material from the old roof, improve its fire rating, protect against hail and improve its insulation rating.&nbsp;

The process will reduce the cost by $38,000.

Part of the roof replacement is being funded by an insurance claim. With the reduction in cost, the county's portion will be&nbsp;$40,081.

Ellis Co. approves bid for completion of Cathedral Ave. work

Verda L. Werner – age 86, of Victoria, Kansas passed peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

Verda was born August 4, 1937, in rural Victoria, the fourth of seven children to Simon and Ida (Ubert) Goetz. Verda grew up on the farm sharing many adventures with her siblings. She graduated from Victoria High School in 1955 and received her degree in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University.

Upon graduation, Verda taught for one year in Damar and then moved to Brewster. While teaching there, Verda met and fell in love with Ivan Werner. They were married on June 18, 1960 at St. Fidelis Church in Victoria. Verda and Ivan began their married life in Brewster and then moved to Manhattan. Victoria became their home in 1970 and Verda started teaching at Victoria Elementary School. She faithfully devoted 27 years to her students, retiring in 1997. Verda remained involved in school activities and served as an editor for the Alumni newsletter. She enjoyed staying in touch with former students and meeting regularly with the retired teachers group. Verda felt honored to be inducted into the Victoria Alumni Association Hall of Fame on September 16, 2023.

Verda’s deep devotion to her faith was an example to those who knew her. She was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis where she served as Lector, Commentator, Eucharistic Minister and member of the funeral dinner committee. Verda enjoyed singing with the St. Fidelis Choir and belonging to the Christian Mothers and Daughters of Isabella for 25 years.

Verda dedicated her life to her family and was happiest when spending time with them. She was an excellent cook and lovingly prepared countless delicious meals for family and friends. Verda was also a talented seamstress and following retirement, she began quilting. She enjoyed the camaraderie of the quilting community and made many quilts to donate. Her family, including extended members, treasure the quilts she designed uniquely for each person.

Verda’s other interests included flower gardening, traveling, and watching a variety of sporting events, especially when her children or grandchildren were participating.

Verda is survived by her husband, Ivan Werner, of the home; her children, Rhonda Fionda and husband, David, Chattanooga, TN; Patti Woschitz and husband, Dan, Bethlehem, GA; Mike Werner and wife, Katie, Leawood, KS; her brothers, Ronald Goetz, Hays, KS; Frank Goetz and Cam Mahaffey, Denver, CO; her sister, Sharon Merrick and husband, Frank, Oviedo, FL; her brother-in-law, Bill Meyers, Overland Park, KS; her grandchildren, Beth Darguin (Andre); Allie Hudson (Blake); Nick Fionda (Rachel); Luke Woschitz; Jill Woschitz; her great grandchildren, Leslie Spearman; Lane Hudson; Maya Darguin; Miles Darguin; her nieces and nephews; and other extended family.

Verda was preceded in death by her parents, Simon and Ida Goetz; her sisters, Alma Meyers; Norma Huffman and Richard; Berniece Bushman and Dennis, and her sister-in-law, Diane Werner.

Verda will be missed for her sense of humor, her gracious hospitality, her servant heart, and her loving spirit.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 9, 2024, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas with celebrant, Father John Schmeidler.

A vigil service and rosary by the St. Fidelis Christian Mothers will be at 6:30 P.M. Friday, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:30 P.M. Friday, and from 10:00 to 11:00 A M. Saturday at The Basilica of St. Fidelis.
