Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Pfeifer, 89, Hays, died Monday, November 21, 2022, at Via Christi Village.
She was born May 23, 1933, in Hays, the middle child of fifteen children of Leo E. and Martha (Etzel) Karlin. On August 31, 1959 she was united in marriage to Don J. Pfeifer in Victoria, and they celebrated over 37 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 11, 1997. She and her husband owned and operated Pfeifer’s Jewelry and Gifts in Victoria. Her memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church of Hays, The Basilica of St. Fidelis of Victoria, the Secular Order of Franciscans, and CSA. Betty Ann and her family cooked at St. Joseph Military Academy, and she volunteered at St. John’s Rest Home and Cedarview Assisted Living. She loved to cook, enjoyed flowers, traveling, and having fun with her extended bowling family. Betty Ann was Don’s biggest cheerleader and was beloved by her nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Survivors include two brothers: Tom Karlin and wife Laura of Eatonville, WA, John Karlin of Hillsboro, OR, five sisters-in-law: Arlene Karlin of Great Bend, Nadine Karlin of Beloit, Sharon Karlin of Salina, Rose Guercio of Victoria, and Donna Simoneau of Hays, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Don, eight brothers: Felix, Leroy, infant Norman, infant Gerard, Herb, Peter, Larry, and Fred Karlin, and four sisters: Sister Leonissa Karlin, Katie Dreiling, Sister Mary Martha Karlin, and Martha Jean Biegler.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, with Fr. Curtis Carlson, O.F.M. Cap. Burial will follow in St. Fidelis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 1:00 pm until service time on Tuesday at the church. A vigil service will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.
