Valery N. “Val” Schumacher, age 66, of Victoria, Kansas passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023 at Victoria, Kansas. He was born May 13, 1957, in Kansas City, Missouri, and was adopted by Norman J. and Yvonne M. (Feltis) Schumacher when he was eight months old.

Val lived in Elkhart, Kansas and Gretna, Louisiana before the family moved to Victoria in 1973. He was a 1975 graduate of Victoria High School, and a member of Basilica of St. Fidelis. He worked as a certified nursing assistant at St. John's Nursing home in Victoria and St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays prior to returning to Louisiana where he worked in the hospitality field.

He moved to Arizona in 1985 where he owned and operated a flower shop and also worked in home healthcare. He returned to Victoria in 2006 where he lived with and helped care for his parents before their passing. Most recently Val was a Senior Companion for over eight years. He loved this job because it allowed him to do the things he loved best, caring for and entertaining others. Val enjoyed playing cards, working on large print word search puzzles, and visiting friends and family.

Val’s survivors include his sister, Vicki Schmidtberger, Santa Clarita, California; his nieces and nephews, Norman Schmidtberger and wife, Heather Kaplan; Kathryn Schmidtberger and fiancé, Keith Roberts; and Beth Fischer, all of California; Glenn Schmidtberger, Jr., of Taiwan; his aunts, Jeanette Younger, Victoria, KS; and Rosetta Feltis, Denver, CO; his cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Yvonne.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2023, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis. Victoria, Kansas with Father James Moster O.F.M. Cap. Inurnment will be at St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis with a family rosary at 10:30 a.m.
