Shirley Weigel, 89, Hays, formerly of Plainville, died Sunday, June 16, 2024 at Rooks County Health Center surrounded by her family.
She was born July 18, 1934 in Fort Collins, Colorado, the daughter of Jack and Emelia (Walters) Cole. On June 15, 1953, she was united in marriage to Edwin Weigel in Catharine and they celebrated 62 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 26, 2015. In 1961, Edwin and Shirley moved to Plainville where they raised their family and worked together at C.O. Mammals. Shirley sang in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Choir and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. After moving to Hays in 1984, Shirley opened her home and heart to many children as a daycare provider. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed playing Bingo and Bunko. Shirley was organized, made homemade noodles, and was a wonderful cook and especially talented at making delicious German meals, which were enjoyed by all. She loved her family and treasured every moment with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include her two sons, Randy Weigel and wife Lora of Plainville and Rick Weigel and wife Janel of LaCrosse, two daughters, Joan Rozean and husband Paul and Janice Skeen, all of Hays, a son-in-law, Ric Leiker of Hays, a sister, Dorothy Lang of Hays, 19 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edwin, a daughter, Jolene Leiker, nine brothers, Florence, Paul, Rudolf, Rupert, Rudolf, Romauld, Francis, Alexius, and Alfred “Fritz” Walters, and three sisters, Helen Stecklein, Adelaide Dinkel, and Bertha Lang.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville with Fr. Leo Blasi officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:30 am until service time on Thursday at the church. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Rooks County Health Center or to Redbud Village.
