Verlin Jay Bell

Verlin Jay Bell, of Hoxie, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at the Sheridan County Health Complex LTC at the age of 93. He and his twin brother, Vernon, were born May 13, 1929, near Studley, KS to Claude W. and Maude (Hite) Bell. He was one of nine children.

Verlin served this country in Korea from 1951 to 1953 as an Army medic. Upon returning from the service, he fell in love and married Carolyn White on November 11, 1956, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church near Studley, KS. To this marriage three children were born, Robert, Jana, and Karla

Verlin was a laborer and excelled in welding, working at many different places. For a time, he served Gove County as Sheriff. One of his favorite past times was playing cards with friends. Heading to a fishing hole with the family was a favorite also. Climbing in the car for a vacation trip made many great memories. Verlin especially enjoyed a destination that could include a cave. He was a member of VFW, American Legion, and served as a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts in Wichita and Quinter and was a member of the Lions Club.

Verlin is survived by the mother of his children, Carolyn Bell; children, Robert Bell (Kathy) of Quinter, KS, Jana Brewster (Bob) of Hoxie, KS, and Karla Bell of Quinter, KS ; and brother, Gene Bell (Suzy) of College Station, TX.; grandchildren, Travis (Lindsey) Brewster, Jeff Bell, Justin Bell, Amanda (Jonathon) Richards, Josh Bell, Michaela (Patrick) Watson, and Paige Bell; great grandkids, Trent Richards, Brody Brewster, Holly Richards, Brantley Brewster, Taisley Watson, and Brock Brewster.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude, and Maude Bell; twin brother, Vernon; brothers, Robert Bell, Albert Bell; sisters, Dorothy Richards and Leona Cummings and two infant siblings, Harold Dee and Marie.

God blessed Verlin with many healthy years, and now, we are honoring his memory with a memorial service followed by inurnment planned for Friday, April 21, 2023, at 10:30 A.M. at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Wakeeney, KS with military honors provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard and the Grainfield American Legion Post 301. A visitation will be held April 20, 2023, from 1:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. with family receiving friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie, KS.
