James Roger Purdy, age 73, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at his home in Wichita, Kansas. He was born December 29, 1949 in Hays, Kansas, the son of John Edward and Loretta Bonita (Gross) Purdy.
Jim graduated from the St. Joseph Military Academy in 1968.
He was united in marriage to Judith Kay Dreiling on January 2, 1971 in Hays, Kansas, and to this union two children were born, Jason and Jean.
He served as a police officer for 32 years at the Hays Police Department, retiring as the assistant chief of police in 2004.
Jim was a devoted husband, loving father, father-in-law, grandfather, and dog-dad.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stephen and Robert Purdy; his sister, Louise (Richard) Neumann; and his in-laws, Verlin and Janie Dreiling.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judith; his children Jason (Rachel) Purdy and Jean (Richard) Appelhanz; his brother Anthony (Chris) Purdy; his sisters-in-law Penny (Robert) Purdy and Carol (Stephen) Purdy; his grandchildren Joshua Purdy and significant other Samantha Assmann, Richard Appelhanz, Morgan Purdy, Allison Appelhanz and significant other Sierra Paden, and Jonathan Appelhanz; his beloved fur babies, Jaguar and Tesla; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Country Acres Baptist Church, 8810 W. 10th St. N., Wichita, Kansas.
