Dorothy Jean Dietz

Dorothy Jean Dietz, age 90, passed away on March 28, 2023, at HaysMed, Hays, Kansas.  She was born on May 5, 1932, in Ellis, Kansas, to John and Mary (Armbrister) Zachman.

She was baptized on June 12, 1932 and confirmed April 14, 1946, at the St John Lutheran Church, Ellis, Kansas.

She attended Excelsior Grade School, Ellis, Kansas, 1937-1946, Ellis High School 1946-1950, and Kansas City Secretarial School, 1950-1951.

On January 27, 1953, she married Milton John Dietz in Ellis, Kansas.  He survives of the home.  They were married for 70 years.

Dorothy was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in WaKeeney. She worked at the Farmers Home Administration and the Western Coop Electric as a secretary and she was the Deputy County Clerk for Sherman County for many years.

She loved to quilt and had made numerous quilts for each of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had also sewn many clothes, curtains, table runners and such over the years.  Other pastimes included playing cards, polka dancing, gardening, canning, and making homemade jellies.

Dorothy was endlessly kind and selfless, loved her family fiercely, and would do anything to ensure they knew how much they were treasured.  She will be dearly missed and remembered by those who had the honor of knowing and loving her.

Other survivors include her two children, Mark Dietz and his wife, Vivian, of Hays and Connie Berens and her husband, Anthony, of Savannah, Georgia, five grandchildren, Laura Sweet (Jared), Heather Schrant (Tyler), Garret Dietz (Megan), Allison Berens with significant other, Peter Watson, and Gretchen Scebold (Jake), three great grandchildren, Lewin Sweet, Barron Dietz, Aubrey Schrant, and one great grandson on the way (Gretchen and Jake Scebold), one brother, Harry Zachman of Wichita, two sisters, Martha Massier of Ellis and Helen Deines of WaKeeney, and a sister-in-law, Adabelle Zachman of Ellis.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Oscar, Ernest, Raymond, and Wayne Zachman and two sisters, Anna Hamburg and Freida Allphin.

Funeral service will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney, on Friday, April 7, 2023, 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Scott Moyer presiding.  Burial will follow in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney.  Everyone is invited to join family for a luncheon served at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, WaKeeney, following the services.

A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, April 6, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
