Phyllis Jean (Eiler) Metcalf

Phyllis Jean (Eiler) Metcalf was born on May 17, 1932, the youngest of eight children, on a farm about 2 miles north of Oberlin. The house was blown away by a tornado in 1942, then the family moved to a house about half-mile west to Howard and Lena (Reasoner) Eiler farm.

Phyllis finished her work here on earth and entered into heaven on December 17, 2022, at the age of 90.

Phyllis attended grade and high school in Oberlin, graduating in 1950. She worked at the Farmers National Bank till her marriage to Dole Metcalf on July 8, 1954, and they moved to his parents’ farmstead in Harlan township the following year. It was there that they raised their 2 children Patricia Ann and Joseph Kent.

Farm activities were the major project of her living on the farm along with gardening and cooking many meals, in addition to being a member and serving the Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the UMW and American Legion Auxiliary which she was president for 4 years and helped with many projects.

In 1991, she and Dole retired from the farm and moved to Oberlin. It was then Phyllis took up a new profession after many years of volunteering she became a CNA and worked at the Good Samaritan Center for over 20 years. A job she really enjoyed and served on many committees.

She leaves her two children: Pat Ranz of Fertile, MN and Joe (Lolita) Metcalf of Danbury, NE; grandchildren: Eric Ranz of Thornton, CO, Julie (Sam) Morales of Thornton, CO, Alex (Emily) Ranz of Ada, MN, Brandon (Bryanna) Metcalf of Wilson, KS, Marci (Dave) Scott of Chesapeake, VA; great grandchildren: Arielle Ranz, Braden Fortin, Elsie Ranz, Tove Ranz, Embersyn Ranz, Axten Ranz, Noah Scott, Melody Scott, Lane Metcalf, Kambrie Metcalf, and Brayer Metcalf; as well as many nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Dole, in 2011; siblings: Brian and Estelle in infancy, Robert in 1948, Margaret (Lloyd) Hurlbut, Pauline (Vern) Loomis, Floyd (Mary) Eiler, and Harry (Beverly) Eiler; son-in-law: Steven Ranz and great grandson: David George Scott III.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church of Oberlin. Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at Pauls Funeral Home. Family will receive guest from 5:00-7:00 PM. Burial will be in Oberlin Cemetery.
