Phillip Duane “Phil” Gatlin, 72, died Friday, January 6, 2023, at Park
Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born February 26, 1950,
in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of John Douglas & Lucille Mae
(Moore) Gatlin.
Phil has been a lifetime resident of Southwest Kansas. He was
affectionately known as Phil, Grizzley, and Papa. On June 2, 1969, he
married Renae Jean Peachy in Denver, Colorado. Phil has worked most of
his life as a truck driver for various companies in Finney County. Phil
loved the outdoors in which he loved the wild animals including wolfs,
grizzly bears, and bobcats. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, drinking
Mountain Dew, listening to classical country music, NASCAR, and the NFL
where he was an avid Raiders fan.
Survivors include a daughter Shannon Gatlin of Holcomb, Kansas; a
son Jeremy & wife Misty Hodge of Russellville, Arkansas; two sisters
Nancy Roads of Fountain, Colorado and Connie Force of Wichita, Kansas;
two brothers Bob Gatlin of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Douglas Gatlin of
Caldwell, Kansas; and five grandchildren Errick & wife Amy Gatlin of
Garden City, Kansas Alexis Gatlin of Holcomb, Kansas, Preston Freeman,
William Freeman, & Bryton Freeman all of Russellville, Arkansas.
Phil is preceded in death by his wife Renae, who died on May 18, 1970.
He is also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Johnnie
Gatlin, Andy Depperschmidt, and Steve Depperschmidt; and two sisters
Candy Gatlin and Eddrena Depperschmidt.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January
14, 2023, at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas. A private
family burial will take place at a later date at Valley View Cemetery in
Garden City. There will be no calling hours.
