LAKIN - Virginia Viola Salem, 95, died on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin. She was born on May 15, 1928 at Holly, Colorado the daughter of Claude Earl & Anna Mae (Schoonover) Tyree. She and George W. Sauer had seven children together.

Virginia graduated from Pikes Peak Institute of Technology in Colorado Springs and worked as a medical lab tech and X-ray tech at Kearny County Hospital before becoming a traveling tech for area hospitals.

She raised seven kids on a farm and ranch and also drove the LA Case tractor. She was an excellent seamstress and made her daughters' clothes and boys' shirts and patched all the jeans which there were plenty with five rowdy boys. She loved dancing and her children remember her and George gliding across the dance floor like they were on air. She was a gifted musician who sang, played guitar and yodeled.

She is survived by five Children- John Gordon and Beverly Sauer of Emporia, Richard Dwight Sauer of Lakin, Karen Louise and George Burns of Lakin, Joyce Ann and Nelson Rider of Lakin and George William (Captain) and Darla Sauer of Lakin, 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two ons- Michael Ray “Mickey” Sauer and Kenneth Erwin Sauer, three brothers- Bill Tyree, Wayne Tyree and Russell Tyree, sister- Marilyn Lamborn and grandson- Larry Lee Burns.

Graveside Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Lakin Cemetery with Rev. Melody Smith officiating. Friends may call from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM Monday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin.
