Darrell Allen Jones, 88, passed away on November 15, 2022, in Colby, Kansas. He was born on October 2, 1934, in WaKeeney, Kansas, in Trego County. He was the son of William Jennings Jones and Ethyl Belle (Gordon) Jones.
Darrell Jones married Mary Kayleene Pierce on July 19, 1958, at the Catholic Church in Hill City, Kansas.
Darrell served in the United States Army as a paratrooper. Mr. Jones graduated from Hill City Memorial High School in Hill City, Kansas. He received his associate of science degree from Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas. Also, Darrell received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.
Mr. Jones worked as a shoeshine boy, service station attendant, roofer, farm laborer, tire repair technician, policeman, deputy sheriff, teacher, principal, superintendent of schools and as an athletic coach.
Surviving family members are two sons, Barton Allen Jones of Bladen, Nebraska and Charles Curtis Jones of Phoenix, Arizona; and one daughter Colette Wahlmeier of Kansas City, Kansas; five grandchildren: Christopher Andrew Jones, Simon Alexander Jones, Michael Aaron Jones, Mary Tessa Wahlmeier, Walter Keegan Wahlmeier, and one great grandchild.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Kayleene Jones; six brothers: James W., Leslie M., Arthur R., Leonard W., Francis E., and an infant brother, Lester M.; five sisters: Mary E. Lofstead, Maude E. Staples, Ada B. Tomanek, Arbutus L. Persinger, and an infant sister, Wanda Mae Jones.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 22, 2022, from 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin, Kansas. Graveside service will be Wednesday, November 23, 2022, 11am. at the Mount Allen Cemetery in Hays, Kansas.
