Almena resident, Ray Darnell Poage died June 22, 2023 at the age of 82.

Darnell was born June 8, 1941, north of Norton, the son of Ray Madison and Ivah May (Guthrie) Poage.

He was raised east of Almena on the family farm and graduated from Almena Rural High School in 1959.

Shortly after graduating high school, at the age of 17, he bought his first piece of land. He always knew he would be a caretaker of the land.

Then Darnell joined the Army Reserves in December 1963.

At an early age, he found his passion for farming while working side by side with his dad. He continued to devote his time to the family farm while working with his cattle and farming the land.

Darnell married Pauline Jones on November 4, 1965 at the Methodist Church in Norton, Kansas.

They lived in Almena until 1967, when they moved to a farm west of Almena. In 1971, they purchased the family farm east of Almena, where they currently reside.

Darnell was preceded in death by his parents; brothers David Poage and Gary Poage; sisters Patricia Poage, Meretta O’Donnell and Evadean Huff and brothers-in-law LeRoy O’Donnell and Roger Huff.

Left to celebrate his life is his wife Pauline Poage of the home; daughters Kimberly (Jim) Humbert of Gardner, KS, Debbie Poage of Scottsdale, AZ, and Cindy (Jim) Voss of Almena, KS; grandchildren Cody (Bri) Nickell, Andy Nickell, Jake Humbert, Lexi Voss, and Carlie Voss; great-grandchildren Ray and Rylie Nickell and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at the funeral home. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 27 also at the funeral home. A private family inurnment will be held in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Almena, KS.

A memorial has been established to the Almena Fire Department and Hospice Services of Northwest Kansas and may be sent in care of Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, 215 W. Main St., Norton, KS 67654.
