Arlis A. Atteberry

Arlis A. Atteberry was born March 6, 1934, to Guy Manson and Grace Amanda Birks Atteberry on a farm just west of Larned, Kansas, in Pawnee County, where he resided until graduation from Larned High School.

He passed from this life at the age of 88 on January 12, 2023, at Country Living of Larned.

He married Shirley A. Oetken on November 16, 1954, at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert; she preceded him in death on August 19, 2021.

Arlis was the youngest of 10 children and was preceded in death by Earl, Gerald, Cliff, Marjorie, Eva, Glenn, Darrell, and Velma. He is survived by: two children, Kim Smith and husband Greg, Larned, Matthew and his wife Pamela, Parsons; four grandchildren, Jarod Smith, Basehor, Talia Smith, Larned, Ariel Smith, Kansas City, Missouri, Blake and wife Mallory Mathis, Parsons; three great grandchildren, Sloane Mathis, Boden Mathis, Logan Smith; brother, Duane and wife Joanne, Scottsdale, Arizona; many nephews, nieces, and his good friend Buddy the dog.

Arlis retired as Postmaster at Larned in 1990 after 34 years of service. He served on both the interim and regular USD 495 Board of Education, a Real Estate Salesman for a number of years, a member of the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility board, Army Veteran, and 12 years as a Pawnee County Commissioner. As a commissioner the approval and construction of the new Pawnee Valley Community Hospital was very dear to him.

He was a longtime active member of Grace Lutheran Church and took part in many community activities including the Food Pantry and Santa Fe Trail Center. He refurbished and maintained many rental properties, enjoyed photography, gardening, garage sales, KU basketball and volunteering.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2023, at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with Pastor Tim Bever presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2023, at Beckwith Mortuary with family present from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.
