Maureen Jones, 89, died Monday, December 19, 2022, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
She was born September 18, 1933, in Moigh, Ballymahon County, Longford, Ireland, the daughter of Thomas and Julia Flood McCormack. She emigrated to the United States in 1951 and was engaged in religious vocations, earning her degrees from Marymount College and Fort Hays State University. An educator for 42 years, she taught in parochial and public schools in the Salina and Dodge City Diocese and USD 443, retiring in 1996.
She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Delta Kappa Gamma, AAUW, and the Retired Teachers Association.
She married Fred T. Jones Jr. in Dodge City, Kansas, in 1972, and he preceded her in death in 1987. Survivors include one son, Fred Jones, and wife, Suzie, of Lakin, Kansas. Grandchildren, Cora Jones and Conor Jones, a sister-in-law, Nila Hartman of Ft. Collins, Colorado as well as numerous nieces and nephews at home and abroad. She valued education and had many lifelong friendships with her fellow educators that she treasured.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, John, Jimmy, and Noel, and four sisters, Bridget, Lily, Patricia, and Bernadette.
Vigil service will be at 7:00 pm Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am Wednesday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City with Fr. John Stang presiding. Burial will follow in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City. Friends may call from noon to 7:00 pm Tuesday at Ziegler Funeral Chapel.
