LuJuana C. “Lu” Baker, 83, died Monday, July 24, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born December 16, 1939, in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Leland Clarence “Hap” and Leila Louise (Wade) Geist.

Lu grew up as a child in Scott City where she attended Scott City schools. She later lived in Glade, Kansas for a short period of time, before moving to Garden City.

On May 18, 1973, she married Robert “Bob” Baker in Garden City, Kansas. They lived in Deerfield, Kansas. In 1980, they moved to Garden City before leaving for El Dorado, Kansas in 1983. After a short stay in El Dorado, they moved back to Garden City where they have lived since.

Lu began her working career at Western State Bank. She then worked for many years at Garden National Bank/Bank of America until her retirement in the late 1980s.

Lu was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City, and she loved spending her time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband Robert “Bob” Baker of the home; four children Cindy Shields of Garden City, Kansas, Billie Ann Cassilass of Phoenix, Arizona, Bart Baker of Dodge City, Kansas, and Becky Moulden of Monument, Colorado; two brothers Frank Geist of Wichita, Kansas and Steve Geist of Moore, Oklahoma; three sisters Cheryl Keyes of Scott City, Kansas, Vicky Wheeler of Amarillo, Texas, and Linda Foster of Ness City, Kansas; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lu is preceded in death by her parents; two sons Jim Shields and Terry Shields; a daughter Kathy Prentice; seven brothers Bob, Larry, Gene, Randall, Don, Mike, & Jack; and four sisters Juanita, Marie, Sheila, and Jane.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2023, at First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City, with Rev. John Harms and Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in garden City. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.

The family suggests memorials given to First Southern Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
