Pastor John David Clayton, of Wellington, KS, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at the age of 75.
John was born the son of Garnett and Pauline (Fowler) Clayton on February 3, 1947, in Anthony, KS.
On August 9, 1969, John and Sandra Mers were united in marriage in Bladenboro, NC. This year, they celebrated 53 wonderful years with each other. John was a man who loved the Lord Jesus Christ and served in full time Christian ministry throughout his entire adult life. John began in ministry by pastoring the Wellington Baptist Temple in Wellington, KS, for 9 years. He then answered the call to missionary ministry. John and Sandra served in France for 16 years, mainly in theological education, but also in various church planting and discipleship ministries. John’s Bible teaching also took him to other countries, including Romania, Haiti, Canada, Jordan, Mali, Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt. John’s focus in teaching was New Testament and Greek. He also taught across the theological disciplines. In his later ministry years, John’s work was first based in Kansas City, and then back in Wellington, for a second season as pastor of the Wellington Baptist Temple. Among his other interests were reading, gardening, and especially woodworking, antique tool collecting and furniture making. John enjoyed spending time with people from all walks of life and was a mentor to many.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Clayton of Wellington, KS; his children: Rebekah Hyer of Wellington, KS, John Nathan Clayton and wife Maureen of Lake Forest, IL and Meredith Clayton and husband Rocky Supinger of Chicago, IL; grandchildren: John Christian Hyer of Hays, KS, Juliette Hyer of Chicago, IL, Gabriel Hyer of Wellington, KS, Elizabeth Clayton of Oxford, UK, Adam Clayton of Lake Forest, IL, Mary Clayton of Lake Forest, IL, Benji Clayton of Lake Forest, IL, and Laura Supinger of Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest daughter, Rachel Clayton.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 7, 2022, with his family present to receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services for John will begin at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at the Wellington Baptist Temple, Wellington, Kansas. Interment will follow in the Argonia Cemetery in Argonia, Kansas.
