Gerald D. 'Jerry' Matheson

Gerald D. “Jerry” Matheson, 85, Hays, died Thursday, July 21, 2022, at his home.

He was born May 19, 1937, in Liberal, the son of Ted and Edith (Woodrum) Matheson.  He was a graduate of Liberal High School and attended Fort Hays State University.  On November 1, 1958, he was united in marriage to Betty Mae Davis in Hays, and they were married 57 years before she preceded him in death on January 16, 2016.  Jerry worked for National Tank, Woody’s Furniture, and Northern National Enron.  He was a member of Cornerstone Southern Baptist church and enjoyed walking at The Mall, radios, records, and collecting coins.  Jerry was very friendly, possessed a great smile, and enjoyed visiting.

Survivors include his two daughters: Diana Jernigan and husband Monte of Goldthwaite, TX and Shari Merritt and husband Daniel of Hays, six grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, son Dean Matheson, and a granddaughter Amber (Matheson) Collins.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church, with Pastor Jason Murray officiating.  Inurnment will follow in Mt. Allen Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 9:00 am until service time at the church.
