Betty Jean Walls

Betty Jean Walls, age 95, died Friday, January 5, 2024, at Western Prairie Senior Living in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born on June 29, 1928, in Grant County, Kansas, the daughter of John Victor and Bernice (Brewer) Carter.

Throughout high school, Betty worked at the Ralston Hotel where she would waitress for the breakfast shift, walk to school and came back after school to waitress the late shift. She graduated from Grant County Rural High School and the Colorado Women’s College in Denver, Colorado. After she graduated from college she went on a girl’s trip to Cuba, this began her love for travel. She married Charlie C. Walls on March 11, 1951. She was a farm wife who enjoyed cooking and traveling, especially on cruises. She was a member of the rural homemaker’s group, Golden EHU and enjoyed going to the annual meetings by bus with other members and their spouses. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses, Kansas, where she taught three-year-olds Sunday school for many years. Betty was a bookkeeper for McCall Land and Title and was active at the Grant County Senior Center. She also served on the Grant County Home Products Dinner Committee. One of her favorite pastimes was watching the Kansas City Royals on TV.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Marta Jackson and husband, Clete of Sahuarita, Arizona, Mary Hamlin and husband, Kent of Garden City, Kansas, and Barbara Clark and husband, Jeff of Hutchinson, Kansas; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charlie; son, Herschel Walls; siblings, Darlene, Dean and Elaine; and grand-daughter, Brooke Hamlin-Lopez.

The family would like to thank all of the employees at Western Prairie Senior Living for taking such good care of Betty the last 6 1/2 years.
