Lillian Marie (Skubal) Sulzman, of Dresden, KS, passed away on July 23, 2023, at the Citizens Medical Center in Colby, KS, at the age of 87. She was born on January 5, 1936, to Ladimir and Blanche (Sejkora) Skubal on a farm east of Dresden, KS.

Lillian attended school at the Jackson Country School through grade school and then Jennings High School for three years. She graduated as valedictorian from Oberlin High School in 1953.

She married John Truetken in Park, KS. They were blessed with two children, John and Lad. Her husband John passed away June 16, 1958. On April 22, 1961, she married Donald Sulzman in Leoville, KS. They lived in Dresden for a year before moving to the family farm three miles south of Leoville. They were blessed with four sons: Harold, Philip, Mike, and Kurt.

After raising her family Lillian spent many years working in Hoxie at the Door Factory and the ASCS or Farm Service Agency. She loved helping people and after retiring you could find her volunteering at the Swap Shop in Hoxie and was an active member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). She was also a member of The Immaculate Conception Church of Leoville, KS and a member of the Church Altar Society.

Lillian was a tremendous cook and loved to feed everyone whether they were family or not. She also loved gardening, flowers, canning, polka music, Wheel of Fortune and the Price is Right, playing cards, crossword puzzles, Scrabble, Sudoku, traveling to visit family and eating at Red Lobster. Lillian was a tireless worker and could not watch TV without snapping beans, folding clothes or some other task. Her favorite time of year was Christmas when all her family was home. Lillian was an avid Kansas State Wildcat and Kansas City Chiefs fan. Lillian was very proud of her Czech heritage. She also had a special place in her heart for stray cats and dogs which she would feed and try to find loving homes.

Lillian is survived by her sons John Truetken (Shelly) of Scranton, ND, Lad Truetken (Lori) of Selden, KS, Harold Sulzman (Patricia) of Colby, KS, Philip Sulzman of Scranton, ND, and Mike Sulzman (Sara) of Shawnee, KS; daughter-in-law Cindy Sulzman of Lee Summit, MO; sister, Annette Lambert of Kerens, TX; grandchildren Jared Truetken (Andrea), Kendra Truetken, Brittany Mosbrucker (Cody), Aimee Wittmaier (Matt), Landon Truetken (Emily), Krista Waldman, Chase Waldman (Rystal), Andrew Sulzman, Abigail Sulzman, Grace Sulzman, Hope Sulzman, Shannon Oberlin (Brian), and Allison Smith; and great-grandchildren Soren Wiest, Gresyn Hofland and Lilith Trappen, Blake and Dekker Mosbrucker, Emily and Allie Truetken, and Jenna Bondegard, Franklyn and Finley Truetken, Benjamin Wittmaier, Blake and Layla Waldman.

She is preceded in death by her parents Ladimir and Blanche Skubal; husbands John Truetken and Donald Sulzman; son Kurt Sulzman; and brother Robert Skubal.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville, KS. Visitation will be Friday 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a vigil and rosary service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Hoxie.
