Michael G. “Boss” Berry, 69, died Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Western Plains – St. Catherine Hospital in Dodge City, Kansas. He was born July 15, 1954, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Don & Lorena (Bell) Berry.
Mike grew up and attended schools in Deerfield, Kansas, and graduated from Deerfield High School in 1972. On August 17, 1974, he married Debra A. Eskelund in Lakin, Kansas. They made their home in Garden City where they have lived since. Mike has always been a hard worker. He began his working career as a small boy delivering newspapers. In his high school years, he worked for several different farmers. While working on the farm, they would take a lunch break inside the scale house where it was cooler, and a TV was available. Every day they watched Days of Our Lives and Mike became hooked on the show and continued to watch it for over 50 years. While still in high school, Mike started working weekends for his Uncle Dale Berry at J L Douglass Roofing. Mike then worked at Simpson Brothers Electric which started his career as an electrician. He later worked at B and R Electric, and Geier Electric. In 1986, Mike started M Berry Electric which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2022.
Mike was a member of Buffalo Dunes Golf Club and loved the game of golf. He also enjoyed watching movies, Days of Our Lives, Young Sheldon, Trading in the Stock Market, and listening to smooth jazz. He also loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Mike is survived by his wife Debra Berry of the home; two sons Ryan & wife Briea Berry of Castle Pines, Colorado and Ross & wife Shanda Berry of Parker, Colorado; a daughter Renae & husband Brandon Pruitt of Leawood, Kansas; five precious grandchildren Brooke and Reid Berry, Benjamin, Rowan and Rylee Pruitt; his mother Lorena Berry; two brothers Marvin & wife Diana Berry and Denton & wife Karen Berry; two sisters Diana Weatherred and Belinda Berry; and a brother-in-law Joe & wife Colleen Eskelund.
Mike is preceded in death by his father Don Berry and a brother-in-law Jim Weatherred.
Mike was never seen without wearing a pocket t-shirt. In Mike’s memory, the family would encourage everyone attending his service to wear a pocket t-shirt, which will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Turning Point Church of the Nazarene in Garden City with Rev. Nathan Haeck officiating. Burial will follow at the Deerfield Cemetery in Deerfield, Kansas. There will be no calling hours.
