James J. “Jim” Horning, 89, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family members.
James was born February 5, 1933, in Ransom, Kansas. James spent 2
years in Brunerdale Seminary before joining the United States Air Force.
In 1952, he married the love of his life, Agnella (Knoll) Horning.
The recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. James enjoyed
reading and working in his yard, plus spending time with his family.
James and Agnella had 5 children, Barbara Hester of Garden City,
Kansas, Keith Horning of Sachse, Texas, David Horning of Garden City,
Kansas, Paul Horning of Lucas, Texas, and Duane Horning of Allen, Texas;
6 Grandchildren Shannon, Taylor, Ryan, Krystal, Nicholas, and Jacobi;
and 2 Great-Grandchildren John Ryan and Clark. Other survivors include 2
siblings Sylvia Knoll of Deerfield, Kansas and Cleatus Horning of Lake
Havasu, Arizona. James is preceded in death by his parents John &
Ludwina (Kreutzer) Horning; 5 brothers Leroy, Julius, Dennis, Alex, and
Jerry Horning; and a son-in-law Bob Hester.
James was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a 4th degree
member of the Knights of Columbus. James was the club manager for the
local Knights of Columbus for many years before retiring in 1998.
James loved people and his family. He did many things in the local
community and church. One of his most important services was Emergency
Foster Care. He and Agnella were on call around the clock to help
shelter and care for children from babies to young adults.
A Vigil service and Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held at 6:00
p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden
City. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17,
2023, also at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Jacob Schneider as
Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.
Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday and from 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
