Velma (Rogers) Legleiter, age 91, of McCracken, Kansas., passed away on April 18, 2024, at Country Living in Larned, Kansas.
Velma was born December 30, 1932, to O. S. "Pete" and Alice (Moore) Rogers on the family farm east of McCracken. She was a 1950 graduate of McCracken High School. She married Carl Legleiter on June 8, 1952, in the EUB church in McCracken, Kansas. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. and was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a member of the McCracken Methodist Church, serving as the Memorial Secretary for several years. Velma also was a Cub Scout leader in McCracken. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 63 years. As a member of the Eastern Star, she served in many different positions. She was the Worthy Matron in 1967. She served as a Grand Representative of Grand Chapter of Kansas and was the secretary for Eastern Star for many years.
Velma was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Grandma. After her children were grown, she entered the work force and worked at the McCracken Post Office. She worked as a receptionist for a doctor’s office in La Crosse and also worked at the Rush County Memorial Hospital.
In her later years, Velma operated a home daycare. She truly cherished this experience. She had a great love for children and small children and babies were always inexplicably drawn to her. While running the daycare, she helped teach and mold the young minds of those for whom she cared while showering them with love and leaving a lasting impression on their young lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Chet and Orval Rogers, as well as a great grandson, Jordan LaFond.
Survivors include her husband Carl, a brother, Walter (Janie) Rogers, McCracken, Kansas, two sons Mike (Sharolyn) Legleiter, Hays, Kansas, Roger (Brenda) Legleiter, McCracken, Kansas, a daughter Lynette (Haydn) Buhr, Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Six grandchildren: Carla (Brandon) Owen, Brandi (Michael) LaFond, Lance (Rachel) Legleiter, Lee (Sarah) Legleiter, Lisa Legleiter, and Brian Legleiter, as well as nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, April 22, 2024, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Church visitation will be Tuesday, April 23, 2024, from 8:00 A.M. to 8:50 A.M. at McCracken Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 9:00 A.M. at McCracken Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas, with Pastor Norma McNair officiating. Interment will be in the McCracken City Cemetery, McCracken, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the McCracken Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas, the Shriners Hospital For Children or the donor’s choice.
