Darrel Mangels

Darrel Mangels of Ulysses died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, on his 80th birthday, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses. He was born Jan. 25, 1943, in Zenda, the son of Floyd and Marjorie (Vogue) Mangels. He was adopted by Bud and Thelma (Mangels) Helwig.

Darrel was a lifetime resident of Grant County. After graduating from Grant County Rural High School, he spent his life as a farmer. Darrel married Pat Mahaffey on Dec. 31, 1962, in Ulysses. He enjoyed working on race cars, which led to his favorite pastime, car racing. You would find him in the pits working on the cars rather than driving them.

Darrel is survived by his wife, Pat, of their home; sons, Ronnie Mangels and wife Nancy, Don Mangels and wife Chrissie, and Bob Mangels and fiancé Casey Knox all of Ulysses; brother, Lloyd Mangels of Franklin, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Brady, Brett, Tyler, Emily, and Jami; and many nieces and nephews.

Darrel is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Mangels and Marjorie Mische, and Bud and Thelma Helwig; brothers, Carl, Eddie and David Mangels; sisters, Vikki Mayers and Judy Caldwell; and grandson, Eric Knox.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Reverend Todd Guinn officiating.

Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
