Eunice Agnes Hamel

Eunice Agnes Hamel, age 87, former Hays, Kansas, resident died Thursday, June 23, 2022, at her home in Russell, Kansas.

She was born May 29, 1935, in Damar, Kansas, to Armond Ernest and Ruby Amanda (Thibault) Newell.  She married Robert Wilford Hamel on September 13, 1953, at Damar.  He preceded her in death on January 29, 1978.

She worked at K-Mart in Hays for a number of years then worked at Wal-Mart for 28 years.  Eunice grew up in Damar, and was a 1953 Graduate of Damar High School then attended the North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit, Kansas.  She moved from Wyoming to Hays in 1984, and attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, computer games, KU sports, the Royals, and was an avid Denver Broncos fan.    

Survivors include her children, Cindy Berland, Damar, KS; Dean Hamel and wife, Cheryl, Thornton, CO; Bruce Hamel and Danny Keosythong, Russell, KS; her son-in-law, Danny Phillips and wife, Vera, Salina, KS; her 14 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren; her brothers, Vincent Newell and wife, Cindy, Hays, KS; and Bernard Newell and wife, Cynthia, Concordia, KS; her four sisters, Martha Hero, Broomfield, CO; Irma Laurin, Almena, KS; Theresa Thomas, Beloit, KS; Kathleen Krier and husband, Gary, Gypsum, KS; her sisters-in-law, Delores Newell, Damar, KS; Lyla Newell, Beloit, KS. Linnea Newell, Denver, CO; and her brother-in-law, Ronald Dougherty, Salina, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; her son, Harold; her daughters, Judi Phillips and Pamela Boden; her son-in-law, Gilbert Berland; her grandchildren, Alex Berland and Dereck Hamel; her brothers, Ernest Newell; Alvin Newell; Norman Newell; Donald Newell; her sisters, Mary Ann Dinkel and Josephine Dougherty.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 1, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar, Kansas with Father Henry Saw Lone officiating.  Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Damar, Kansas. 

A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601     

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Friday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar, Kansas.

The family suggests memorials made payable to: St. Joseph Church Memorial Fund in care of the mortuary.
