KHP: 4 injured after SUV crash with school basketball bus

SALINE COUNTY —Two adults and two teens were injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Tuesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Buick Encore driven by  Marvin Leroy  Steenbock, 83, Longford, merged onto northbound U.S. 81 from westbound Interstate 70.

The SUV turned left in front of 2017  USD 405 Lyons school bus  transporting the girls high school basketball team and driven by Lelisa Dawn  Gilbert, 29, Chase. The bus struck the Buick SUV.

After impact the SUV came to rest across the center median and left shoulder. The bus struck the guardrail and came to rest in the center median.

EMS transported  Steenbock  Gilbert and two teens on the bus to Salina Regional Medical Center. The drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.  There were 23 occupants on the school bus.

SALINE COUNTY—The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating an injury accident involving a USD 405 Lyons school bus in Saline County.

Just after 4p.m. Tuesday, Salina Police notified the KHP of a crash involving a school bus and a passenger vehicle that occurred slightly north of the Cloverleaf at the Interstate 135 and I-70 interchange. Multiple troopers responded to the scene.

The driver of the school bus and a couple of high school students were transported as a precaution due to slight injuries, none of which are significant.

According to a statement from USD 405, " Our high school girls basketball bus was in an accident on their way to Minneapolis. There were no apparent major injuries, although a couple were transported to the hospital for minor injuries. Parents have been notified."

The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported to the hospital with elevated, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Trooper Ben Gardner.
