Jerold 'Jerry' Wayne Briney

Jerold “Jerry” Wayne Briney, 86, Hays, died Friday, September 2, 2022, at his home.

He was born April 22, 1936, in Cullison, Kansas, the son of Wayne E. “Salty” and Nellie V. (Rice) Briney.  Jerry graduated from Cullison High School in 1954 then continued his education, graduating from Pratt Junior College and Fort Hays State University.  After college, he served in the U.S. Army.  For 25 years, Jerry worked as an insurance adjuster.  He married Ruth E. Jones on August 18, 1957, in Dodge City, and they celebrated 65 years of marriage.  He was lifetime member of the FHSU Alumni Association and a 40-year member of the Elks Club.  He was an Elvis fan, enjoyed classic country music, and his hobbies included coin collecting, hunting, and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Ruth of Hays, a son: Gary Briney of Hays, two daughters: Lori Briney Swift of Niceville, FL and Cheryl Kinderknecht and husband Gilbert of Ellis, a granddaughter: Jennifer Bruggeman and husband Tate of Clay Center, and his first great grandchild due in December.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Frank H. Briney.

To celebrate Jerry’s life, his family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.  Inurnment will be at a later date in Sunset Cemetery, Cullison.
