Millard Joseph Moore, 98, Hays, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at his home.
He was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Hays, the son of Menzies M. and Mary E. (Boitnott) Moore. In 1943, he graduated from Hays High School, and on Aug. 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Gladys Marie Meier at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.
They celebrated 74 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on Sept. 29, 2020. Millard was an entrepreneur, a soil conservation contractor, a farmer, and always said he never worked a day in his life because he loved what he did.
His memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #1325, Land Improvement Contractors of America, past president of the Kansas Land Improvement Contractors of America, Ellis County Conservation District Board, Cedar Bluff District Board, and the Four States Irrigation Council. He was a world traveler, enjoyed joyriding and seeing the countryside, and had a great love and appreciation for his family.
Survivors include his two sons, Orville Moore and Alan Moore and wife Lori, all of Hays, four daughters, Gwen Staab and husband Norman of Overland Park, Jeanette Weigel and husband Bob of WaKeeney, Shirley Bollig of Hays, and Joyce Moore and partner Jill Collins of Overland Park, 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gladys, a daughter-in-law, Janel Moore, two brothers, Kenneth and Milton Moore, and three sisters, Eileen Yarnell, Louise Kertz, and Greta Worman.
Mass of Christian Burial will at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. Joshua Werth officiating.
Burial will follow in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. on Sunday at St. Joseph Catholic Church and from 9 until 9:45 a.m. on Monday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
A vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary, all on Sunday at the church.
