Lillian VanLoenen, age 84, of Hays, Kansas passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society Care Center in Hays.

She was born December 15, 1938, in Hays to William F. and Bridget Anne (Jacobs) Diehl.

She married Douglas O. “Doug” VanLoenen on November 21, 1971, in Hays. He preceded her in death on May 29, 2012.

She was a homemaker, and worked at Fort Hays State College in the Psychological Service Center for a few years before her marriage. She grew up in Hays, and was a 1956 graduate of Girls Catholic High. She served two years in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), and was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

Lillian and Doug lived in Arvada, Colorado and McPherson before moving back to Hays in 1986.

Lillian is survived by her children, Melissa Seltmann and husband, Ryan, Hays, KS; her granddaughter, Mallory Grace Seltmann; Matthew VanLoenen, Hays, KS; Andrew VanLoenen and Jason VanLoenen, both of Kansas City, KS; her siblings, Virginia Ekey, Wichita, KS; Janice Krannawitter and husband, Don, Hays, KS; Ken Diehl and wife, Carol, Roseville, CA; Karen Swain, Lawrence, KS.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, William F. and Bridget Anne Diehl; her husband, Douglas O. “Doug” VanLoenen; her brothers, William “Willie” Diehl; and Michael Diehl; her sisters, Judy Pohlenz; Kristina Schmidt; and an infant brother and sister, Jacob Diehl and Kathleen Diehl.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays with Father Rich Daise officiating. Burial will be in Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kansas with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post No. 9076.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, and from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.
