Helen Irene Hanavan

Helen Irene Hanavan, 98, passed away November 29, 2022, at Healthcare Resort of Leawood, KS.  She was born August 12, 1924, in Sharon Springs, KS, to Charley W. Newland and Georgia Lee (Finey) Newland.

Helen was a graduate of Sharon Springs High School, Sharon Springs, KS. She enjoyed sewing, playing cards, and cooking.  After Philip retired, they enjoyed traveling with family and friends to different states sightseeing.

Helen was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, KS.  She was an active member of the United Methodist Women (UMW) and participated in the UMW circles.  Helen looked forward to eating out once a month with the ladies of the UMW circles.

On December 28, 1944, she married Philip E. Hanavan, in Colby, KS.  They shared over 49 years of marriage, prior to his death on September 9, 1994.

Helen is survived by:  her daughter, Brenda Albright of Lenexa, KS; grandson, Jeremy (Sara Driver) Albright of Haslet, TX; great-grandson, Parker Albright of Haslet, TX; granddaughter, Anna (Justin) Wilkinson of Spring Hill, KS; great-granddaughter, Darianna Albright of Spring Hill, KS; granddaughter, Alisa (Bo) Muir of Buhler, KS; great-grandson, Evan (Kaytie) Muir of Haven, KS; great-great-grandchildren, Nicholas Muir and Selena Muir of Haven, KS; great-granddaughter, Dedra (Charlie) Beetch of Sequim, WA; grandson, Leland (Brenda) Hanavan of Hutchinson, KS; and great-grandson, Matthew Hanavan of Hutchinson, KS.

She was preceded in death by:  her parents; husband, Philip; son, Joel; two brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 5, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary, with the Reverend Nicole Schwartz Eck officiating.  Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park.  Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022, and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2022, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, KS, to benefit the radio broadcasting program, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
