Terrence Joseph "Terry" Kortan, age 76, of Palco, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at Rooks County Hospital. Born on February 22, 1948, in Hays, Kansas, Terry was the only child of Frank and Emma (Brin) Kortan. He graduated from Palco High School in 1969 and married the love of his life, Wanda Keller, on October 25, 1969, at St. John's Lutheran Church.
Terry's life was defined by his dedication to his community and his family. He was a devoted member of St. John's Lutheran Church, serving on the church council, singing in the choir, and teaching Sunday school. His commitment to service extended to the Palco Lions Club, where he was a member for over 50 years, and the North Hampton Township Board, where he served for more than 40 years.
A man of many talents and roles, Terry was a dedicated family man and a passionate farmer. He served as the transportation director and a bus driver for the Palco School District #269. Additionally, he drove activity buses for Fort Hays State University and TMP-Marian, and transported buses across the United States for Gavin Smith Transportation. Known for his kindness and dedication, he was appreciated by many for his habit of picking stickers during football practice, earning him steak suppers and gift certificates from grateful parents and players.
Terry took great pride in his role as the cemetery sexton for Pleasantview Cemetery in Palco, where he was also a trustee. His hobbies included fishing, sketching and drawing, playing pinochle, and flying as a licensed pilot. He was known for his quick wit and enjoyed engaging in conversations on various topics. Above all, Terry cherished his family and delighted in attending his grandchildren's activities.
Terry is survived by his loving wife, Wanda of Palco; his daughter, Michelle Funk-Dowis (Jamie) of Hays, and their children, Madison Funk and Trevor (Abby) Funk; his son, Scott (Tania) Kortan of Silver Lake, KS, and their children, Mallory, Mariah, Ebram, and Mabree; and his daughter, Tracy (Dennis) Dinkel of Palco, and their daughter, Emma. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Kingston and Luna Funk.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Ethan Kortan.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at St. John's Lutheran Church, located 7 1/2 miles north of Ellis. Burial will follow in Pleasantview Cemetery in Palco. Visitation will be from 4 PM to 8 PM on Friday, with a prayer service at 7 PM, all at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS 67637. Saturday visitation will be at the church starting at 9:30 AM until the service time.
