Herbert “Herb” William Metcalf, age 67, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Select Specialty Hospital – St. Francis, in Wichita, Kansas. He was born May 3, 1956, in Ulysses, Kansas, the son of Elmer Clinton and Mary Marie (Dillard) Metcalf.
Herb was a lifelong resident of Hickok and Ulysses and graduated from Ulysses High School. Herb married Norma Lipscomb on June 28, 1975, in Ulysses. He worked at Grant County Road and Bridge for 36 years as a road grader operator. Herb also was a member of Rose Lane Church of God, drove the church bus, and taught Sunday School. He enjoyed the time he spent with his grandson, listening to music, fishing, and was an animal lover, especially dogs. One of his household projects was building the shelving for the plant room they added on to the house.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Norma of their home; son, Everett Metcalf and Joan, of Lawrence; daughter, Sophia Rietcheck and husband, Chase, of Ulysses; grandson, Saven Rosales of Ulysses; brothers, Garry Metcalf and wife Jan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Robert Metcalf of Hickok; and sister, Diana Talbert of Ulysses.
Herbert is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Marie Metcalf; brother, Clifton Eugene Metcalf; sister-in-law, Pat Metcalf; grandmother, Clara Dillard; niece, Sara Etzold, and nephew, Michael Todd Metcalf.
Memorial service will be Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Rose Lane Church of God in Ulysses with Pastor Gerry Dupuis officiating.
