Verna Mae Mauck, 93, of Stockton, Kansas passed away January 23, 2023 at the Rooks County Hospital in Plainville, Kansas. She was born May 27, 1929 at the family farm in rural Graham County, to Gerald and Ethel (Lohness) Scott.
Verna attended school until eighth grade when her mother passed away. She, along with her sister, Geraldine, had to raise their younger siblings. Later she attended Colby Community College and earned her GED. While raising her siblings she worked as a waitress at Buck’s Grill in Hill City. This was where she met George Mauck. They were married June 18, 1949, in Hill City. To this union four children were born: Sherry, Steven, Mary Ann, and Bradley. After becoming a Nurse’s Aide, Verna worked at the Graham County Hospital for the next 27 years until retirement.
Verna had many wonderful times, but none more than when she was surrounded by her family. She especially loved cooking Sunday dinners when all the family came. No one could fry chicken better than Verna! In her spare time, she would relax with crocheting, embroidery, creating quilt blocks, coloring, and playing cards. While watching TV in the evenings, popcorn was her favorite snack. She was a friend to all and Grandma to many.
