Mary Edith Anderson, 101, died Monday, August 7, 2023, at High Plains Retirement Village Assisted Living in Lakin, Kansas. She was born September 3, 1921, in Holcomb, Kansas, the daughter of William Robert and Ethel Mary (Norton) Smith.
Mary grew up in Holcomb, Kansas where she attended Holcomb schools.
She lived most of her life in Garden City. Mary lived in Garden City, Webb City, Oklahoma, Kit Carson, Colorado, Deerfield, Kansas, Shidler, Oklahoma, Cedarvale, Kansas, and Blackwell, Oklahoma, before moving to Lakin, Kansas in 2018.
On January 27, 1938, she married Herman Edward Anderson.
Mary worked for many years at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City as a cook until her retirement. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, collecting gnomes, and her flowers especially sunflowers.
Survivors include three sons, Tommy Ray Anderson of Tornado, West Virginia, George Bret Anderson of Great Bend, Kansas, and Gordon Eugene Anderson of Cimarron, Kansas; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Herman who died on January 26, 1974. She is also preceded in death by her parents; eight sons William Edward Anderson, Jimmy Clifford Anderson, Ronald Dean Anderson, Ivan David Anderson, Kenneth Leon Anderson, Richard Warren Anderson, Jerry Lee Anderson, and Bobby Joe Anderson; a daughter, Susan Marie Graves; three brothers William Lee Smith, Theodore Harmon Smith, and Elmer Ray Smith; a sister, Faye Williamson Dale; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakin, Kansas with Rev. Rita Stockton officiating. Services may also be viewed on Facebook Live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Page. Burial will follow at the Deerfield Cemetery in Deerfield, Kansas. There will be no calling hours.
