On Sunday, October 23rd, 2022, William "Bill" Getty passed away at the age of 89.
He was born on March 18th, 1933, in Downs, Kansas, to William and Hazel (McStay) Getty. Bill graduated from Downs High School. He was a Marine and served in the Korean War.
On June 10, 1956, he married Audrey Bedient and together they raised one daughter, Lynne.
Growing up, Bill played a variety of sports, from baseball with Osborne American Legion to being a member of the 1950 undefeated Downs High School basketball team. He even went on to be the assistant coach for the 1971 Logan High School state champions in basketball. Bill also loved to golf and spent many hours on the various golf courses in the area. He won many golf awards over the years. In his later years, Bill could be found with a never ending supply of Brach’s jelly beans and a steady rotation of true crime novels.
Bill was preceded in death by his father William, his mother Hazel, his sisters Jeanne, Helen, Liz, and Elaine, as well as his wife Audrey. He is survived by his daughter Lynne Getty of Hendersonville NC, his sister Pat Steen of Ulysses KS, his brother Steven Getty of Ottawa KS, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
No services are being held, as Bill would not have wanted any additional attention. His daughter would like to thank the staff at SunPorch of Smith County for caring for Bill with such dignity and respect.
