Margo L. Zinszer of Tyler, Texas passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2022. She was 80 years old.
Margaret Louise was born November 23, 1941 in Duck River, Tennessee, the daughter of Fred Kenneth and Mary Ruth (Davidson) Matlock.
In 1959, as a young woman working at a Humpty Dumpty Drive-In located in Evansville, Indiana, she met Zip, an Army paratrooper on his weekend furlough with the 101st Airborne in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Quickly, Margo and her best friend, Phyllis, arranged a double date with Zip and his Army comrade. However, as Margo frequently enjoyed telling, this double date paired Zip with Phyllis, not with her! So, fate had other plans, and Margo and Zip were married on April 16, 1960 in Parkers Settlement, Indiana. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2020. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2020.
Prior to moving to Tyler, Texas in 2018, Zip and Margo lived in Pocatello, Idaho for 31 years. In the first years of their marriage Margo was an Army wife, but was also a loving mother and a homemaker. She also worked outside the home as a saleswoman for various retail stores, then later retiring as a bank teller for US Bank in Pocatello. She enjoyed conversation and seemed to never know a stranger she didn’t like, making good friends in all the places Zip’s career and their retirement would take them. She and Zip made homes in the Kansas communities of Hays, Smith Center, Greensburg, Osborne, and Emporia, as well as Carbondale, Illinois. Upon their retirement, they enjoyed spending the winter months in Arizona camping communities where they made friendships with other retirees.
A talented quilter and seamstress, Margo was also a card player with a special fondness for “hand & foot.” She and Zip also enjoyed motorcycling and camping with their children and friends in Colorado. Then later, after moving to Idaho, they were frequent visitors to Yellowstone National Park and its surrounding area of which they often described the landscape as “good-looking country.” Their love for this area took them along a road where they discovered a building lot for sale, and although Zip was not quite ready to part with his money, Margo was determined to spend her share. So, they built their Zinszer Family Cabin outside of Island Park, Idaho in 1994, a place where they loved spending their retirement summers, and making lasting memories with family and with friends. Margo will be missed by those who loved her, but we are grateful that she is now free of her struggles with pain and diabetes.
Margo is survived by her three children, daughter Kimberly Stapp and husband Gary of Tyler, Texas, son Randy Zinszer and wife Cheryl of Flower Mound, Texas, and son Shawn Zinszer and wife Kori of Jacksonville, Florida; seven grandchildren, Lacey Stapp, Taylor Stapp and wife Jessie, Riley Zinszer, Carly Zinszer, Brennan Zinszer, Dallon Zinszer, and Kelsey Zinszer; and great-grandson Luke Stapp; two sisters, Girleen Winternheimer and Dorothy Swanson, both of Wadesville, Indiana, and a brother, Eugene Matlock.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hans “Zip” Zinszer, her parents, and infant brother Billy Brown Matlock.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023 in Mt. Allen Cemetery, Hays, where her ashes with be laid to rest next to her beloved Zip. Services are in the care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
