Betty Jean Stark, 87, Hays, Kansas died Friday, August 4, 2023 at HaysMed surrounded by family.

She was born November 17, 1935 in Lexington, Nebraska, the daughter of William and Pauline Wells.

In 1952, she graduated from Gothenburg High School.

On June 26, 1954 she was united in marriage to Gerald Loy “Jerry” Stark in Gothenburg, a union that would span 69 years.

Betty was a loving homemaker, taught country school in Nebraska, worked for the local school district calling substitute teachers while living in Columbia, Missouri, and after Jerry and Betty moved to Hays in 1991, was a home health aide.

Betty was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church and enjoyed attending various Fort Hays State University games with Jerry. She loved her family, and had endless energy for her grandchildren, often treating them to chocolate ice cream for breakfast.

Survivors include her husband Jerry of the home, two sons, David Stark of Wichita and Matthew Stark and wife Alicia of Issaquah, WA, two daughters, Debbie Stark of Hallsville, MO and Becky Stark-Perry of Colorado Springs, CO, a brother, Bill Wells of Mesquite, NV, eight grandchildren, Steve and Sarah Edwards, Logan Stark, Cherokee, Ashton, and Eddy Stark-Perry, Cody and Maya Stark, and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. Inurnment in Mt. Allen Cemetery will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested and payable to Messiah Lutheran Church for the Youth Group.
