John Scott Campbell, Jr. (Junior)

John Scott Campbell, Jr. (Junior) was born Febr. 11, 1948 at the hospital in Portis, KS. To John S. Campbell, Sr. and Iva (Hendrickson), the youngest of seven children. He passed away August 5, 2024, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital with family by his side.

Jr, attended school up thru the eighth grade at Bloomington, KS. When it closed, he attended school and graduated at Osborne High School in 1966. He signed with the Army in June of 1965 and entered the KS. National Guard on March of 1966 and served until March of 1972.

Jr. married his wife of 57 years, Marjorie Slothower, on March 27, 1967, to this union three sons were born, Michael, Steven and Kelly.

Jr. farmed with his dad until his passing when he went into sales working as a salesman for Hastings Home Safety where he received several awards including Top Salesman of the year in 1979. His desire to farm took over and he went back to it. He also loved working with his livestock of cattle, pigs and sheep and occasionally a hand at raising special breeds of chickens and turkeys with his kids.

Jr. cared about his community and showed it by being a part of the Hawkeye Township Board, the Butler Cemetery Board and later when moving into Portis he ran on the Portis City Council and was responsible for acquiring the Portis Community Center and with the help of his son Kelly and wife Ashley laid the groundwork for Portis to improve the water system in Portis.

Jr. also dedicated 17 years of his life to the Osborne Rural Fire Department thru Portis. In his spare time, he would enjoy hunting and fishing with his boys and his brothers.

Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Shirley Hays, Irene M. Macy, Sylvia Reinking and brothers Wendell and Charles (Bill).

Surviving is his wife of the home, son's Mike, of Tescott; Steve and wife Trish of Rural Portis; Kelly and wife Ashley of Cawker City; sister Charlene Tuxhorn, brother-in-law Ed Reinking both of Smith Center; and sister-in-law Vesta Campbell of Olathe. Grandchildren Kody Campbell, Colby;

Shaylynn Campbell, Junction City; Skyler Campbell, Wichita; Tanner Campbell and fiancée Tara, Diller, Nebr.; Lane Campbell, Portis; Linsey Campbell, Portis; Marcus Allen of WaKeeney; Austin Allen and wife Erica of Topeka, Hannah Coop of Cawker City, Hunter Coop, Portis.
