Kay Ellen Unruh

Kay Ellen Unruh, 74, Hays, died Sunday, May 1, 2022, at her home surrounded by her husband, daughters, and sister.

She was born September 30, 1947, in Great Bend, the daughter of Parker and Dorothy (McDonald) Carr.  Kay graduated from Larned High School and Fort Hays State University, with a Bachelor’s degree in Education.  For more than twenty years, Kay was rates and service representative for Midwest Energy.  On September 2, 1967, she was united in marriage to Randy K. Unruh in Larned.  They celebrated 54 years of marriage.  Her memberships included Hays First United Methodist Church and Soroptimist International.  She volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Hospice of HaysMed, and CASA.  Kay was a talented artist, enjoyed reading, going to the movies with friends, growing flowers, and appreciated culture, the arts, traveling, and education.  Most of all, she loved her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband: Randy of Hays, two daughters: Kari Balthazor and husband Kristian and Kelly Waisner and husband Mick, all of Eudora, a sister: Linda Hahn of Fayetteville, AR, three grandchildren: Mason and Grady Balthazor and Silas Waisner, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, foster brother: Jack Hill, and a niece: Jennifer Hahn.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 6, 2022, at Hays First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Craig Hauschild officiating.  Inurnment will follow in Mt. Allen Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Thursday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time on Friday at the church.
