Kathy Lynn Nowlan Powell

Kathy Lynn Nowlan Powell, 61, Springdale, KS passed away Thursday, September 1, 2022, after a prolonged hospital stay. She was born December 13, 1960, to William and Helen Nowlan in Mansfield, OH. She moved with her parents and older brother to Memphis, TN and graduated from Raleigh Egypt High School.

Her family moved to Kansas, which is where she met the love of her life. She was united in marriage to Thomas S. Powell on January 30, 1982, in Leavenworth, KS. She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Sterling College and her master’s degree from MidAmerica Nazarene University. She spent over two decades teaching 4th and 5th grade at Tonganoxie Elementary School until she retired. Even after retirement, she enjoyed serving as a substitute teacher. She was an active member of First Christian Church in Leavenworth, KS. She loved teaching at Vacation Bible School and spending time with her “Church Ladies” from church. One of her greatest joys was delivering toys to abused and neglected children at the Tennyson Center in Denver, CO. She was very talented with crafting and woodworking and enjoyed making projects for her friends and family. She was an animal lover and never met a dog she didn’t love or a stray cat she wouldn’t adopt.

Kathy was a beloved mother and grandmother. She is survived by her two sons, Thomas W. Powell (Chelsea), Hays, KS and David M. Powell (Amy), Cumming, GA, her brother Patrick T. Nowlan, Memphis, TN, and her grandson Thomas S. Powell, Hays, KS. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Powell, her parents, William and Helen Nowlan, her mother and father-in-law, Thomas and Donna Powell, and her brother-in-law, Timothy Powell.

Visitation and funeral service will be held at First Christian Church, Leavenworth, KS. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2022. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 9, 2022. Burial will be at Mount Muncie Cemetery.
