Marcella 'Marcy' Garcia, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2023, at home surrounded by her family. “Marcy” as she was fondly known to family and friends was born November 23, 1944, in Garden City, Kansas, to Dionicio and Irene Garcia.

She graduated from Garden City High School in 1962, and in 1966 she received an RN from the Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend, Kansas. In 1987, Marcy completed the Midwifery Internship Program from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Over her career, she delivered 1,563 babies in the United States and as a missionary in Mexico.

Marcy was a community member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame from 1975 to 1990. She held numerous jobs in Women’s Health Clinics, Labor and Delivery, Prenatal and after care for her patients. She was a member of several professional affiliations and appeared in numerous research and Women’s Health publications. In 2001, Marcy made the list of top 100 nurses in Dallas, Texas.

Marcy retired from nursing in 2009 and moved to Las Cruces.

She became a member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, where she volunteered in pastoral services for ten years. One of her most cherished church activities was being a member of Los Pasqualitos group.

Marcy loved life and her family deeply. Her laughter and smiles were infectious. She loved music and dancing. Her hobbies were reading, cross-stitch, crossword puzzles, Mahjongg, Spider, and Mexican Train dominoes. She was known as the life of the party!

Marcy is survived by her sisters Virginia Jaramillo and Christina Padilla, both of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Geri Duran (Richard), Maria Elena Jojola (Antonio), and Zante Garcia (Debby), all of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Sylvia Garcia of Carrollton, Texas; her brothers Dennis Garcia (Celeste) of Chula Vista, California, Philip Garcia (Marlene) of Sacramento, California, and Charles Garcia (Vonnie) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; 26 nieces and nephews; 24 great-nieces and great-nephews; and a plethora of extended family and friends.

Marcy is preceded in death by her parents Dionicio and Irene Garcia, and a great-nephew Wyatt James Wilder.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 11, 2023, at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas. There will be no calling hours.
